The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

How dare they ship this without a dedicated photo mode?

Pretty realistic fur shader.

I'm in the progress of writing my review and I'd like to share a small opinion of mine. Feel free to disagree. Trying my best to not break embargo here, so don't expect too much details.

Anyway, I have an issue with "buyer guide" reviews. That is: reviews telling you if the game is worth your money and not whether the game is good or bad. This is a personal thing for sure. I mean... gaming isn't free. Not everyone has the privilege to buy several $60 games every month. So I understand it's important for some people to know the value of a game next to its quality. As a reviewer, I am privileged to try out games for free. So it's easier for me to judge a game on its quality and not its value/$.

That said, I don't like the comparisons people make when we talk about value. Game length is a hot topic right now regarding The Order 1886 and that makes me sad. Kinda. People keep comparing the game to other games. They're not wondering if the length is right for this game. They're wondering why it is shorter than other games. It's unacceptable etc. But that's not the question we should ask. The question should be: does the length work for this game? I'm not gonna answer this question because I can't... not yet... but it's something to think about.

If I buy a really good book for $15 which is somewhat short and then another book which is equally good but ten times longer, I won't be disappointed. They're the same price but they're both good in a different way. I don't view length as something that is so important to the experience. I'd rather read, watch or play something that is really tight yet short compared to a bloated mess that takes forever.

The Wolf of Wall Street is a personal favourite of mine and it's about three hours long. Do I like it more than other movies because of its length? No. In fact, some people think it's way too long. It's the same price as any other movie, but compared to games, it doesn't seem to be as important. Now, I know this is not a 100% fair comparison. A game is $60. Movies and books are way cheaper and less of an investment. It's easier to just focus on the quality here.

But the price doesn't influence the quality of a game, only its "value". Would The Order 1886 suddenly become better if it was $30? No. It would become an easier buy, I agree. But the game quality will not change. Nothing will change. Only your perception. So many people want game to be "art", but it seems there is still a big business side to things that people have issues with. Again, in my opinion people aren't criticizing the game length because they're wondering if it'll work for The Order 1886, but because other games are longer and more deserving of their money. Despite not having played the game. They're only going off a number.

Now, keep in mind everything I wrote here is about the game length. I did not say anything about the gameplay. Don't take this text of mine as proof I think the game is incredible or anything. I'm just saying I disagree with the length drama. Feel free to disagree with me, as this is but an opinion piece of mine.

If any post in the Order threads deserves a /thread tag, it is this one.

Medium was never a cakewalk, but I think going with hard would not be a bad idea. Aside from two encounters (one towards the end of the game) I didn't die too much, but never was not on my guard.

Can you switch difficulty on the fly, just in case?

OTs for games don't go up until the day before, been that way since October.

Oh really? Never saw that rule change, thanks! It's kind of a shame in that they help spread awareness and build interest which helped a games' initial sales. Not a big deal for AAA games but for games like The Evil Within.

Technically by definition all games have 'CG quality' visuals, plus when you consider that Doom was seen as being photorealistic at release I wouldn't start celebrating that we've finally achieved the best visuals.

CG <> best visuals or photorealistic visuals...

Just means that you achieved gameplay graphics as good as a pre-rendered CG movie.

I agree but a lot has happened between then. Both of those franchises launched with multiple sequels with MP.
I feel sorry for the devs reading these comments because I'm sure they poured a lot of time and effort into this but this game is not a patch on what was previewed at PS4 launch.

That is the whole point that you are not getting. This is RAD's first game on console and their first engine made from scratch. If they are successful then you can bet a sequel will have more content and mad in less time. Yet you are totally not giving them a chance. If everyone though like you then you can forget the sequel with MP.

Drake's handy pocket book, which is a joy to flip through and the smattering of puzzles that go on to become a staple of the series would make me say otherwise, and although the platforming and climbing is mostly automatic, it's still offers more freedom than The Order.

I think it's the impressive set pieces that really make UC2 so special, that entire train sequence start to end was glorious.

Nope, I just watched playmethrough's playthrough, but unless there's some hidden gameplay elements or features or mechanics he somehow missed out on I can still tell you that The Order has very basic gameplay and that I personally think Uncharted had a better base to build from.

I don't think I can ever take anyone who sits there and watch someone else play through a game seriously. It's just like a rule of mine not to listen to criticism of anything from someone who were too lazy to do their research themselves.

i have some sympathy with game IP owners who dislike lets plays.

A lets play or walkthrough before release date, revealing everything, including the music, seems to me to be just monetising the intellectual property of someone else. It undermines the impact for people buying the game because everything is already spoiled. It also may present the game poorly. It dimishes the business of professional reviewers who have to work under a contract. Why does google allow it? if somone was running through all the features of a new unreleased android they would be all over it like a cheap suit.

the people who watch probably weren't going to buy the game anyways, it's almost akin to pirating the game IMO.

OTs go live on the day of release.

I could post it by midnight tonight (14 hours) since that's the 20th here in New Zealand. Shit, I think I just might, the hype is going insane and it seems like everyone is already playing the game lol

That's roughly around the same time the review embargo is lifted and the game goes on sale in NZ and AU.....cannot think of a reason why the OT shouldn't go live then as well

Might be worth checking with a mod though just in case

Review embargo ends 5am PST on Thursday morning which is two hours after midnight here, so that makes sense.

Okay. The OT goes up in

Awesome, hopefully all the haters stay in the review thread and we can actually talk about the game itself in the OT.

Found a funny bit of irony at an EB just now. A poster of The Order that read : PLAY THE GAME BEFORE RELEASE
demo
.

I chuckled.

Sorry for being such a pain in the rear, but is this game worth it? I am going to buy it from amazon now since I have credit just wanted to be sure its a good game, from what people are posting here it sounds like it..but is it like Dying Light or Infamous Second Son, just want to have an idea what its like..I passed on Evolve since I had read the bad reviews but never pre ordered a ps4 before so dont want to be sorry that I did

Holy moly, if the review thread is anything like the Gamespot thread, I don't know if I'll survive. I dislike going into them but gah... Friday release.

The GAF impressions have been positive but there are a few legitimate concerns. If you don't mind waiting and do listen to reviews, the embargo will be up at 8 AM EST tomorrow.

The drama surrounding this game is suffocating; I've never encountered anything like it in terms of video game releases. It's just mental. I just can't partake in those threads now, at least not until I've played the game for myself.

Yeah people are saying there's been similar hate thrown at Ryse,Driveclub, Sunset, but I was here for all that and I don't ever remember seeing....this...
