So I Bought A NEW iPad At Best Buy, And The Clerk Unsealed It...

Yeah, I returned my old Mini 3 to get a new one for the color I wanted since I found a good deal to PM. I was set to go, and the guy just opened the fucking box. I was like, dude, what the heck? He was all like "Don't worry sir, I'll get you set up and ready to go quickly". I was all like "I never asked for this; please ask for permission next time and give me a new, sealed replacement." He asks "So you bought it as a gift?" and I'm like "Frankly, that is none of your concern, the only concern is replacing the open product, with all due respect sir."

After a good 45 minutes or so, the manager explained that at his store, he was telling all associates to help set up their tablets as a courtesy, unless you asked not to. I called BS on that, and demanded my sealed box. He then told me they were out at his location, but offered me a refund, plus a 20 USD gift card for my troubles.

What should have taken 15 minutes took 4 hours, and now I am home remounting my backup. Have you ever had a clerk blatantly open a purchase without your consent or permission? It's infuriating.

EDIT: as suggested, here is a more detailed summary.

Wait a minute.. For how long did you own that open box ipad? Why did you want to return it?

So basically you bought an used item with a rebates, kept it, tried to return it to get a new one and are now mysterious pissed off and waited 4 hours over this bs?

Were you planning to resell the unopened ipad on ebay or something? Are stores rental services to you?

Having the dude removing the wrap is no big deal, lots of people do struggle with setting it up.

Why wait 4 hours?
This is a lot more logical that might initially seem. I bought an iPad Mini 3 open-box for a good deal at Best Buy a few days ago; it was in good shape and had 9 months of Applecare on it. Since the battery seemed less than optimal, I scheduled an appointment to swap it out to get a fresh battery, and (like always by request at my Apple Store), a sealed replacement, so I can get home in my dust-free room, install a screen protector, and not worry about it.

Today, I found out that a store which Best Buy price matches had the same iPad I bought open box, for 40 bucks cheaper NEW. Now, doesn't it make sense to you that I would return my iPad to the store I bought it from to get 40 bucks back at the end of the day, plus a warranty extension? Truly, a no-brainer.

So, I go to Best Buy with my original iPad in tow. I confirm if they price match, and tell them that since I am not swapping for an identical model, I would return it, and then buy/price match the new one; the original clerk said that is the procedure anyways with non-identical exchanges, so that's what we do.

Except not; he has to go help someone else, so he takes me to another register to do the return. I return the one I brought in, get my money back, and then buy/Pm the other one. After an override, everything went without a hitch. After I gave the clerk my money, he went to the locker to bring me the iPad. He then unwrapped it right in front of me, and before I realize it, he took the sheet covering the tablet off, making the screen protector installation that I was gonna do a headache (truthfully, I am very picky about application of such things, but I also take pride in how well I put them on; it is my right after all).

Then, after the talk in the OP, and after the assistant manager and manager came in and all that, around 45 minutes elapsed.

See, it was a legitimate return, a legitimate purchase, and a legitimate price match; nothing more. In the end, I lost 4 hours, but effectively made 60 dollars out of it and extended my warranty for free, but at the same time, I no longer wish to give places like these my business. What I wanted to know was if this was common practice now, or not; I know with a lot of phone companies, most clerks open the device without asking, but with tablets and computers? In the end, the Best Buy I did end up buying the replacement from told me that that was not a corporate policy at all, and that they always ask before opening any type of computer.
My theory is that the op was planning to get a new device and resell it, having paid the original open box price first, for max
Profits. Nobody else would care enough about a wrap if it was for personal use.

But for someone planning to resell it, the fact that it was opened is a big problem..

Also I believe Huelen has a history of being ... Very active... Ub that old "free to a good home" thread where gaffers would give away old games for free.

I hope you didnt resell those games too....
Don't know why you are assuming the worst of this scenario; this iPad is for me, and no one else. As for giving away games and receiving them, I have never sold any game I've gotten for free, only used them myself or passed the buck by also giving them away; I also like doing giveaways from time to time.

Again, there is no hidden or seedy agenda here, just bad customer service. I am honestly more annoyed at that particular store's policies and management than the clerk that unwrapped it.

Best Buy sure is stooping low. They're probably opening it up so it's harder for you to return it, maybe.

Huenlen, man, it's like you live a life of perceived slights

But yeah, this is dumb. Clearly opening it to make returns/fraud harder.

Are you sure you weren't at a GameStop?
No, I hit up GameStop after for the best tablet stand under 2 bucks.

Ironically, the iPad I returned was an open box buy. It was good, but only had 8 months of warranty left, and I was able to PM and save like 40 bucks and get a new product with 12 full months, so why the heck not right?

I needed it seed so I could install a backing and a screen protector. He didn't just open the box, he peeled off the plastic off the thing!

So yeah, this wasn't an exchange, it was a return, and a buy with a price match; no reason at all to open the PMed purchase.

I agree they should ask first, but you really got them to return it so you could open the plastic yourself? What a waste...

More or less guarantee that is part of it. Bought a defective product they would only exchange. When I paid and was about to leave they stopped me real quick so they could open the package to ensure I couldn't try and return it.

On the one hand, this probably helps out way more customers than it harms. A bet a lot of people need help getting their tablets and shit set up. On the other hand, if doing this makes it harder to return items and get refunds at the store, then it's a pretty stupid practice. Either way, they should ask.

Oh, wait, you exchanged it? Not a return for money and a rebuy?

Yeah you were never getting out of there without that box being opened. Otherwise you could just return it for money/credit.

Also likely thing; they had plenty of iPads, they just weren't down with how you were handling it so they wanted you out

I thought this would be about them checking to make sure no one walks out with one that was returned with a weight inside.

They should ask if you'd like the service. How'd it end up taking you 4 hours though?

You sound like a douche honestly. After he unsealed it I just would have told him I didn't need it setup and then left with the product. Way to make things more of a hassle than they need to be. You were going to open it anyways.

the timestamps in this sort are all over the place
It should have taken 15 minutes, but it took almost an hour (45 minutes) to get the manager. Then, I had to drive to the other side of town to another Best Buy to get the tablet there. What should have taken 15 minutes took hours.
Who would need help setting up an iPad? Especially someone who had an old iPad, you'd just need to log in with your Apple ID.
Oh yeah, not me; An I could backup doesn't work for me due to size and the number of pulled apps I have on it that I have on my HDD. Sometimes, pulled apps can't be re-downloaded either!
You wasted 4 hours of your life arguing about shrink wrap with a clerk?
Don't judge me, I can multitask.

Back when I worked at Best Buy a while back,we definitely opened up each LCD/Plasma television to prevent fraud before it left the store. This was when they were new. Too many people were saying their screens were damaged after a few days, complaining of pixels, just because they wouldn't like the picture. We'd reseal the television back up but we would open it.

I don't know about this tablet situation. When I bought a galaxy tab pro a few months back, I just bought it and walked out of the store. Though stores can choose whether to open your products in store or not. If you don't like it, you can always take your business elsewhere. I know a future shop that opens up any beats by dre headphones so you can't come back saying they were already opened or were counterfeit etc. A lot of people buy them, switch them out and then say, I received counterfeits etc.

w-what's the problem? With expensive electronics it'd save you the trip to see if nothing is wrong with it from the get go such as the screen. Imagine getting to your home and then seeing a dead pixel

So he tore the shrink wrap and you threw fit over it? I mean come on now, the time wasted is totally on you at that point.

My gf at the time bought a Beat headphone at an Apple store. The clerk insisted she open it right then and there because he said it's just such a surreal experience opening such an high end product yourself the moment you purchased it.

They should ask before doing that. I think that's the end of it.

Op you're throwing things out of proportion though. They gave you a free $20 gift card. Get over it.

Kinda my feelings also, he did it all right there in front of you, if your goal was to walk away from the store and open it your self 5 minutes later then you cost your self the time. The end result would be the same.

What else were you doing in the 4 hours?

You wasted 4 hours of your life arguing about shrink wrap with a clerk?

nah son... it's a matter of principle. A person did that to my sister's phone that i bought for her and i felt violated... like, could you not have asked me first?

Last time that happened to me at an apple store, the clerk offered to give me a new one so that i could open it. I'm not fucking technologically impaired, i know how to work i cloud. they definitely need to get into the habit of asking first.

"Hey, what are you doing?"
"Don't worry sir, I'll get you set up and ready to go."
"No, no thank you. Don't do that. I'll set it up myself."
"Oh. Did you buy this as a gift?"
"No, I'd just rather do it myself, it's no big deal, sorry."

Why was this not a thing that happened?

And what happened in the forty-five minutes between you saying "that's none of your business" and the store manager explaining he tells employees to set up tablets for customers before they leave?

Fucking hate when retailers do this. One of the best experiences about new tech is opening it up for the first time.

ATT does the same thing, even if you order online. They assume you don't understand what a SIM card is and so they open the thing, put the SIM in for you, then ship it to you. It's idiotic at best and insultingly awful at worst.

I agree with the OP. I would be fucking annoyed as hell if someone opened the shit I just paid for. Don't fuck with my shit.

When I bought my iPad 2 a few months ago at BB, I did it online but with store pickup. Went there, picked it up from the online pickup kiosk and went home. No problems.

Guarantee you they don't check it for that.

Hells yes they do. I couldn't trade in an old Mac book air because of a dead pixel. Funnily enough, the first lady I asked would have let me do it, the second one had her eyes on it like a hawk.

But a part of me feels like she thought I stole it or something. It was a Christmas present that my uncle bought me and it wasn't even a dead pixel.
