So I Bought A NEW iPad At Best Buy, And The Clerk Unsealed It...

Honestly, at this point after my MetaKnight Amiibo, even with my 4 years of Gamer's Club left, I don't want to give BB more money. I mean, I've had a really shitty experience with them these past 6 months. Pre-orders that never came in, this, improper returns without consent, ETC. I understand that retail can suck, and trust me when I say I don't get mad, I just calmly explain the situation and ask them for solutions; if it is not acceptable, I escalate. I mean, I've read years of GameStop horror stories and I was always like "Nah, my GameStop ain't like this", but with me and Best Buy, it's getting easier to sympathize with these guys.
can we start a kickstarter to get a camera crew to follow huelen around
Blame Space, please don't judge me; you were Mr. Refurb Groupon Deal Gone Wrong, surely you can sympathize.
"Hey, what are you doing?"
"Don't worry sir, I'll get you set up and ready to go."
"No, no thank you. Don't do that. I'll set it up myself."
"Oh. Did you buy this as a gift?"
"No, I'd just rather do it myself, it's no big deal, sorry."

Why was this not a thing that happened?

And what happened in the forty-five minutes between you saying "that's none of your business" and the store manager explaining he tells employees to set up tablets for customers before they leave?
Assistant manager was trying to "calm me down" saying it was no big deal, and that they could apply screen protectors themselves. I told her that I felt like I was being treated like a child, and that if I want to do things myself at home my way, I should be more than able to. They were packed, so it took them that long to get the manager for me. In the mean time, I was paying bills, and talking to other people in the customer service line (hint: most of them weren't happy campers either!).

When I got my iPhone last month we needed to do a backup in store because I had forgotten to do it before I left my place. I would've been okay with the Apple Store guy opening the box and doing his thing, but he was nice enough to hand it to me and let me have the honor. Really nice guy, his service guaranteed I'd be coming back.

I'd probably frown or something if he had done so without even asking, but I certainly wouldn't waste four fucking hours of my day arguing about it.

What is PM?

If you took it home and opened it to find out it didn't work it's no different then them opening it. Your still returning an opened package. If you were returning one to exchange for another there is little reason for them to not try and help you.

I bought an ipad mini and they punched me in the throat and then laid a hot Carl on my chest.

Im going to radio shack next time.

This is what I'm wondering.
I had a very similar conversation and left with my purchase at an Apple Store.

You wasted 4 hours of your life arguing about shrink wrap with a clerk?

This, I don't understand. I mean OP, you could have told the store that you it was a gift or whatever, but you've already told us that it was for you. So you saw the clerk open it, but you were able to stop him before he could damage it/touch it/set it up in a way you don't like or any BS like that. So what was the problem? Why stay there for 4 hours or whatever when you were gonna open it within that 4 hours anyway? Were you like shaking your fist because of the "principle of the thing" or something?

Price Match.

He purchased his previous iPad Open Box (opened/return/floor sample product) owned it for awhile, returned old iPad for in-store credit for a new iPad that he was getting at a discount due to a price match from another retailer.

Assistant manager was trying to "calm me down"

I don't know that you should be using quotes there.

I told her that I felt like I was being treated like a child, and that if I want to do things myself at home my way, I should be more than able to.

Yeah, you probably shouldn't be using quotes there.

I guess my question is why you felt personally insulted by the fact your iPad was being opened for you as opposed to simply telling her to stop and that it was okay, now she has less work to do because you're more than happy to open and set up the iPad yourself.

The magic of unboxing.

Actually I will give apple unreserved props for making everyone's packaging better.

Did you bitch about milk all that time?

You weren't getting out with it sealed, so you basically wasted a bunch of time, good job...

I not only make them open shit like this, but also make them recycle the box and paperwork there so I don't have to take it home and do it myself.

2 birds, 1 stone.

They....they don't deny you the near orgasmic pleasure of removing the film from the screen (assuming it has a film cover) do they?

They did that for my new MacBook Pro. Guy opened the box, turned it on and set all my settings to me. I mean, thanks dude, but I didn't want my OSX to be in Chinese...

Went home and restored everything from my previous Mac with my Time Machine. I'm still annoyed at the fact that someone else got first use of my brand-spanking new, multi-thousand dollar laptop that I purchased... Shit's infuriating. >_<

I dont see the big deal.. I dont think Ive ever got a new phone either where the associate didnt open the package and set up the sim card for me.

Best Buy sure is stooping low. They're probably opening it up so it's harder for you to return it, maybe.

Probably....

...and don't forget to show your fucking ID with your RECIEPT so they can track your fraudulent returning ass and make sure your aren't fucking them over during the process...

Because returning them something with a receipt is equivalent to them getting fucked over, versus it being a courtesy and warm convenience extended to you to make sure that you're satisfied with your shopping experience with their establishment.

Returning at Costco on the other hand is fantastic from what I gather... You know they sell iPads? :)

Why are most of your threads on the verge of backfire?

I think it's weird that they did that, but I guess they just want to be sure you're not going to return something that's broken.

It's not a big deal. Maybe you should have said that it was a gift . . . for yourself.

Wait a minute.. For how long did you own that open box ipad? Why did you want to return it?

So basically you bought an used item with a rebates, kept it, tried to return it to get a new one and are now mysterious pissed off and waited 4 hours over this bs?

Were you planning to resell the unopened ipad on ebay or something? Are stores rental services to you?

Having the dude removing the wrap is no big deal, lots of people do struggle with setting it up.

Why wait 4 hours?

My theory is that the op was planning to get a new device and resell it, having paid the original open box price first, for max
Profits. Nobody else would care enough about a wrap if it was for personal use.

But for someone planning to resell it, the fact that it was opened is a big problem..

Also I believe Huelen has a history of being ... Very active... Ub that old "free to a good home" thread where gaffers would give away old games for free.

I hope you didnt resell those games too....

If you intended to just take it home and open it and set it up, why subject yourself to 4 hours of arguing just so you can have the honor of breaking a seal?

Who gives a shit if he opened it? It's Best Buy, they don't care if you opened and used something to return it. I recently returned like 3 Nexus 9's because HTC really has some shitty build quality, zero problems. I also had to exchange my 55" Vizio because of light bleed problems, they just brought another one to me and picked up the old one.

Wait, OP is the guy who hassles people on sales tax also. So this makes sense I guess.

OP is mad because he didn't get to bust the shrink wrap hymen so he had to spend 4 hours edging to get his nut. Geek Squad can't treat an Ipad like he does.

Confused, I thought places like Best Buy tried to trick customers into paying for setting up their devices? Seems like a bullshit excuse to me for opening it right there.

This happens to me every time I buy a phone. They have to smash their greasy heads against it and set it all up. I know what to do, give it to me.

I dunno, everyone busting on him when he apparently got a refund and a $20 credit. You all jealous of the credit. Now he can buy an iPad and almost get an overpriced Bluray.

So what's the problem here? You weren't going to open it?
Yeh I mean fair enough its weird they would do that, but its hardly the end of the world. You saw the guy unseal it so its not like it wasnt sealed and there was some doubt over whether it was used as a display or something.....

"Hey, what are you doing?"

FRANKLY MR SHANKLY THAT IS NONE OF YOUR CONCERN. I WOULD RATHER BE DIFFICULT AND REFUSE TO COMMUNICATE RATHER THAN ACT LIKE A REAL HUMAN BEING.

I bought a MacBook pro last week (returned it because I decided to wait for a refresh). When I bought it, one of the Apple employees started to break the seal and the other Apple employee quickly turned to me with a wide eyed expression and asked "Did you want to open it?!"

I just said it was fine and I got my Mac set up and left the store. The whole experience was fast and simple.

If fraud prevention was the issue, the clerk could have simply explained that before opening the package.

It's good to be sensitive to both sides of the issue, but Huelen is right to be pissed that this was done with no explanation.

This is a lot more logical that might initially seem. I bought an iPad Mini 3 open-box for a good deal at Best Buy a few days ago; it was in good shape and had 9 months of Applecare on it. Since the battery seemed less than optimal, I scheduled an appointment to swap it out to get a fresh battery, and (like always by request at my Apple Store), a sealed replacement, so I can get home in my dust-free room, install a screen protector, and not worry about it.

Today, I found out that a store which Best Buy price matches had the same iPad I bought open box, for 40 bucks cheaper NEW. Now, doesn't it make sense to you that I would return my iPad to the store I bought it from to get 40 bucks back at the end of the day, plus a warranty extension? Truly, a no-brainer.

So, I go to Best Buy with my original iPad in tow. I confirm if they price match, and tell them that since I am not swapping for an identical model, I would return it, and then buy/price match the new one; the original clerk said that is the procedure anyways with non-identical exchanges, so that's what we do.

Except not; he has to go help someone else, so he takes me to another register to do the return. I return the one I brought in, get my money back, and then buy/Pm the other one. After an override, everything went without a hitch. After I gave the clerk my money, he went to the locker to bring me the iPad. He then unwrapped it right in front of me, and before I realize it, he took the sheet covering the tablet off, making the screen protector installation that I was gonna do a headache (truthfully, I am very picky about application of such things, but I also take pride in how well I put them on; it is my right after all).

Then, after the talk in the OP, and after the assistant manager and manager came in and all that, around 45 minutes elapsed.

See, it was a legitimate return, a legitimate purchase, and a legitimate price match; nothing more. In the end, I lost 4 hours, but effectively made 60 dollars out of it and extended my warranty for free, but at the same time, I no longer wish to give places like these my business. What I wanted to know was if this was common practice now, or not; I know with a lot of phone companies, most clerks open the device without asking, but with tablets and computers? In the end, the Best Buy I did end up buying the replacement from told me that that was not a corporate policy at all, and that they always ask before opening any type of computer.

Don't know why you are assuming the worst of this scenario; this iPad is for me, and no one else. As for giving away games and receiving them, I have never sold any game I've gotten for free, only used them myself or passed the buck by also giving them away; I also like doing giveaways from time to time.

Again, there is no hidden or seedy agenda here, just bad customer service. I am honestly more annoyed at that particular store's policies and management than the clerk that unwrapped it.

But what about the next time they have a big deal?
