Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza) Zero Announced

Played about 30+ minutes of the PS4 version but I gotta crash. Doesn't look like it will have saved my progress. Got up to just past the karaoke part. Very on rails up until there. Was cool to see Nishikiyama again.

Other than few very minor changes here and there, it seems to be extremely similar to Ishin, right down to gaining points from doing random stuff around town that can be spent at shrines (don't know if that was in 5, which I didn't play).

Graphically, it looks about on par with Ishin and runs at 60 fps with decent anti-aliasing. The facial textures look improved in the cut scenes, but otherwise it's pretty much the same level.

I'll see if I can't run through the whole thing tomorrow or so.

Yeah, when I saw the combat upgrade system was from Ishin I got a lot less interested. Really didn't like how Ishin upgraded your stances in a way that you pretty much have to focus on just one or two stances to get anywhere near the end of the upgrades for that stance, leaving the other 2 stances worthless/weak. Or you use all 4 stances and end up with only half the moves by the end.

Ishin was alright, but they really shouldn't use that as a base for the non-historical entries.

Will this cover the "25 years ago" plot in Y4?
Majima has his eyepatch so I assume at least some of it is after

We will see what happened to Majima after that incident in zero.

Thank you for posting. The shrine thing wan't in 5.

Yeah, I don't like them either. And guessing from Zefah's post, 精進目録 is in zero as well gah...everything that was not good in Ishin has been carried over to zero.

back home and got in 14 day trail. Now I'm downloading the demo. I will try it myself later.

I have a JAP account and a PS Plus membership ready and waiting. I'd like to stream some of the demo on Twitch tonight, after work - BUT, have the Yakuza team blocked the ability to use the share button in this like they did with Ishin?

Has anybody who has played the demo checked this?

Enjoyed the demo quite a bit, the game is beautiful and runs well. The two new fighting styles are both great, and there were several heat actions which elicited a verbal "daaammn" response from me. Seeing money being literally beaten out of people is also a pretty funny gimmick.

Part of me wishes I had skipped the cutscenes as I am already getting interested in the story, and I know I won't be playing this for awhile.

Still, goddamn this game is slick. Everything looks great, Kazuma's new styles are super rad, Kazuma and Nishiki's shitty karaoke band is amazing... Only problem is how many of the cool side activities are blocked off in the demo. I weep outside of Sega High-tech Land's doors.
Yeah, this is such a tease, they tell you to go play some minigames but most of the minigames on the map are locked.

Wait. You have Japanese PS +?
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned that before, had it for more than a year now. It was hit and miss for awhile but past few months they have really gotten better. Yakuza 1/2 HD was added in fact.

I have not played Ishin so maybe I am just missing something there, but I'm not sure why this system will lock you out down the line? They seem to encourage mixing and matching since there are some status related skills that seem to apply to all stances scattered throughout the trees (like vitality or heat gain). Theoretically the only limit is how much money you can make, and it remains to be seen how hard that will be. I don't know if these skill cost amounts will be same in full game but it's kind of hilarious how much the end skills are (a billion yen each!). I was getting anywhere from 200 to 500 thousand yen off just early game street punks, so maybe that cost won't be so huge down the line.

It's semi-blocked. When you first start you can't record, but near the very end (when the game opens up and encourages you to go screw around before the demo ends) you can record stuff. So mostly just the cutscene stuff you can't, as that is the vast majority of the rest of the demo. Mini-games and random street fights are fair game.

Makes sense. Similar to Ishin - then. That game allows you to record come the Premium Adventure Mode, which involves free-roaming after the main campaign is completed. Thanks for the reply!

This is a very meaty demo. The story part took me over an hour and the entire map is available to explore. The one thing I don't like is unlike RGG5, you can't avoid encounters by walking, I hope this is not the case in the retail version.

I like the most of the texts on shop signs and billboards are readable now.

That's a concern, but if it's anything like Ishin, you can grind pretty easily. I think the bigger problem in Ishin was that the gun stance was just completely overpowered and you could murder everyone without getting hit.

I think it's cool that they've made money your primary resource for both leveling up and, I assume, buying things. It was funny starting with almost a million dollars worth of yen while all of the conversations were about how Kiryu is still a bottom-rung member of the Dojima family and Nishiki is lecturing him on how to quickly rise to the top.

I gotta say, as much as I love Kiryu's voice actor (Kuroda Takaya), I kind of wish they went with a different voice actor for this game. Same with how they wrote Kiryu's dialogue. It really is just the same character in the skin of someone who is supposed to be in their early 20s.

Third Party Productions needs to be getting this bad boy over here.

Yakuza 4 has showed me I love this series. And going to the 80's in Japan is gonna be amazing. Especially on PS4.

I was wondering about this...is he more of a bad guy in 0? As opposed to the Yakuza with a heart of gold in the rest of the series.

He's a thug in this game, its set before he calms down in the first game. Its sorta entertaining to see Majima appearing to be the more calm and collected character out of the two in this game, bearing in mind he's a lunatic in the entire rest of the series!

I've been playing around on the demo, here are my impressions so far:

First the bad - I experienced a bit of screen tearing in certain portions of the map - quickly moving the camera while looking up at the large brightly lit signs caused the top of the screen to tear a bit. Not a deal breaker by any means but a tad disappointing. Likewise there was a single point in the game where the frame rate wasn't locked at 60FPS - Theater Square at night toward the end of the demo. Again, that's just a very small issue I'm nitpicking as the game runs perfectly for the entire rest of the game. Did anyone else notice these issues (especially the tearing) or was that just me? I'm guessing this'll probably be cleaned up by release though, as Ishin was so polished that I'd put this down to the game just being in development at the mo?

Anyway, the good stuff:

The cutscenes - they are the best looking ones ever, they look even "cleaner" than Ishin and the attention to detail (especially on the faces) is really impressive.

The fighting styles - They are all ace, I only dabbled with the three of them but I like all three so far. The default style (with the blue aura) felt more like a less refined, more vicious version of his trademark fighting style.
The speed style seemed pretty cool, especially with all the dashing around but I didn't really work out how to make the most out of it.
The "power" style seemed sorta like Seijima's style from 4 and 5. You can charge the finishing triangle attack on your combo's for massive damage. Plus you can pick up large objects like motorcycles and bash goons round the head with them. Also I really like that if you attack weapons like signs you automatically pick them up and continue your combo without breaking a sweat. Makes fights even more awesome!
I also love how each fighting style gets different music, its a really nice touch.

The graphics - Kamuracho has never looked better, little details like puddles, readable signs, better lighting (especially in the day time) really help bring the city alive. Its still not the most beautiful game around but I think it looks fantastic all the same.

The mini games - Looks like there is even more to do in Kamuracho than before, even if most of the places were locked for the demo. The battle cage looks more evil than ever and Mah Jong and singing still just as awesome and addictive as ever.

The new/changed areas - One advantage of playing the 5 main games in the series is that I know the city like the back of my hand. So its really awesome to explore areas and see what they looked like all those years before the events of the first game took place.
Theater Square looks slightly nicer, with plants adorning the center of the square.
The vacant lot in the middle of the map is now a dilapidated area with a shrine in the middle like out of Ishin.
The site where the homeless haven Purgatory should be is actually opened out slightly, with a nice view of a "garden" looking area. You can't explore any further though so who knows what is really there.
The future site of the Millennium Tower is the largest of these new areas, as instead of a large building you have smaller, narrow streets that look like they've seen better days.

As always I can see this game taking over my life for a few months as I try to 100% it. I like what I played so far and I can't wait to sink my teeth into the full game. I've personally no issue with the levelling system in this game. Ishin's issue was that you had to firstly unlock moves via many means, then purchase them with the orbs that you could only get through levelling up. Zero though looks like you get tons of money by doing just about anything so I don't think it'll be anywhere near as bad.

Does anyone have a list of how to perform all the heat moves available in the demo, along with better explanations of the fighting styles? I've seen there are quite a few heat moves (via youtube) that I missed that I'd like to try and unlock.

100% agree with everything you said, Shadowman. I also noticed the screen tearing, but it didn't happen too often. It was also at the top of the screen for me as well.

It's extremely similar to the other games, but seeing Kazuma as a rookie is brilliant. That punch at the end and seeing his reaction - oh man, poor fella.

I found enemy encounters to be way more frequent in this game. The battles are fun and Kaz's fighting styles are cool. He's a bit sloppier and more aggressive - I like that!

Can't wait until late March, should be around when I get the full version. :D

I thought the intro in particular was really striking. Seeing our good pal Kazuma beat the shit out of a salaryman as he begs for mercy (I assume he was doing a collection, don't have the sort of vocabulary knowledge to tell for myself) was almost kinda disheartening, lol.

It is odd to hear him sounding almost exactly the same as his 30-year-older self, though.

Yeah. The guy in the car was the client. Kiryu was collecting the money for him,
but he also set Kiryu up.

I took some videos of the karaoke, if anyone fancies a sing-song!

Oh shhhhh, forgot every RgG gets a demo. So much to play between Resogun, Majora's Mask, this and The Order tomorrow.

edit: hmm PS+ only. Might keep my 14-day trial for something else as I've already got plenty to play.

Is the game sub-1080p or do they still have that blur effect in first person view? The shot of Kiryu looks sharper than the FP ones.

I've seen videos;
I can't believe someone (one of his 'brothers') actually punched Kiryu that he winced in pain
.

I wish I had read the thread earlier. Was searching the store for the demo and then noticed that it's part of PS+.

Is there a trial available for PS+?

Create a new dummy Japanese account following the instructions here:
http://tojohq.net/tutorial-how-to-download-yakuza-zero-demo/

You can select a free trial of PS+ at the end of the set up process so you can then download the demo.

Not sure about the blur effect, but the game is 1080p as far as I could notice.

Glad I wasn't the only one seeing the tearing. I get paranoid that its my TV/PS4 with stuff like this!

Yeah, I can't wait to get the game in March either, that and Bloodborne have me hyped!

I heard rumors the asian release might have english support? is there any news on that?

I'd import it if it did

I seriously doubt it. From what I've heard, after they're finished making a game, they get a choice to either localize it, or move on and develop another game. I'm not ready to believe they developed it and localized it this time.

Btw nowadays you need to confirm the email address for a new PSN account by clicking on a link they send you.
Just saying because some of these how-to-make a JP account guides are outdated in some parts.

I made a Japanese account about a week ago and I didn't need to confirm anything.

The beat 'em up parts look so good in the trailer. English would be a godsend in the Asia version but it seems like that just doesn't happen for Yakuza games. I'm still considering picking it up regardless but I'm worried I wont be able to really make the right decisions during text to play it well.

I always got drunk when I visit Kabukicho (Kamurocho in real life). Yakuza's blurred graphics helps add realistic feel ;p

I have this same problem. I picked up Kenzan to play but I really wonder how using a guide will go and if I really want to do that in future. I'll test Kenzan as it is a spin off, I don't think it'll be the same.

Yeah Thepatrick's guide on Gamefaqs is great if you need to get through Kenzan, I used it when I did my second playthrough.

I dunno if he changed it but for the substory "Today's excuses"

The choices are:

As for the Asian version of Zero having English subtitles, its an unconfirmed rumor, Ishin had the same thing too.

must say that the Zero demo was fucking fantastic. Also great cast that they picked for the 3 leaders of the Dojima group, INSANELY good voice acting and their facial expressions really carry over well. Considering all 3 of them Hideo Nakano, Hitoshi Ozawa, Riki Takeuchi. Esp the last 2 have acted in various Yakuza related movies they really carry their acting abilities into the title perfectly.

I played today and I'm pumped for western release (and yakuza 5 this summer!). The only thing I didn't like is thwt weird expository cutscene style in between the traditional cutscene (here they look amazing) and the new comic panel style.
The ones I found strange are lip-synched but the characters seem to be automatically animated in a sort of automatic expression sync.

It seems that the Demo is no longer tied to the PSPlus. Anyone can download it now:

The Yakuza 0 demo launched for PlayStation Plus subscribers last week in Japan is now available to all users.

The demo will let you play up until the middle of the game’s first chapter. In terms of length, it runs about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. The story begins with a certain murder and follows Kazuma Kiryu as he is engulfed in a power struggle in the underworld of Kamurocho, 1988.

I'm downloading it right now :D

Finished the demo. Pretty fun, more of what made the previous games enjoyable, but in 2015 the graphics are a big let down. It's crisp and colourful but the rest is disappointing.

A lazy cross gen look yet again where the game still doesn't use the higher quality and better textured cut scene models in gameplay. Dead stop animations when hitting a bump in the ground or corner of a building, invisible barriers at every corner, even the walking animation has the 1990's hitch in it not being able to seamlessly loop.

I'd still buy it and enjoy it as I have most of the games in the series but it's still damn annoying to think what could have been.

That's not going to change until Sega drop the PS3 versions and that's not going to happen until the PS4 takes off better in Japan. It is annoying, as much as I love the series I remember being blown away by RGG3 and 4 looking so amazing on the PS3, a real step up compared to the previous gen and I'd love to see what a RGG6 could look like that is only released on the PS4. For now though I'm happy with the series at least being a nice smooth 60FPS in battles, that really does make a heck of a difference on its own.

Just finished the demo. I really liked 1988 Kamuro, the combat styles are interesting but I've had some performance issues: screen tearing and textures pop-up. That being said, I'm sure it's going to be the same old enjoyable hard-boiled story.

It's kinda frustrating that only the JP audience has any influence on this. The only thing I can achieve by voting with my wallet is them not bringing potentially better future Yakuza titles to the west that finally would have made the next gen jump, only for Japan to enjoy :(

Loved what I played on the demo. I really, really hope it gets a western release. Or at least an Asian version with English subtitles.

Argh I want to play it....Sony hurry up localizing Ishin and this on PS4!!

I doubt we're going to get Ishin, unfortunately. We never got Kenzan, either; they probably think they're "too Japanese" or something. Hopefully we'll at least get this game if Yakuza 5 does well.

I played the demo and liked it, but I am worried I might be getting burned out with the Ryu Ga Gotoku formula. I had to force myself to finish Ryu Ga Gotoku 5. The story in this one looks more interesting though.

I wish there was a bit more of an 80s feel to the world. I appreciated the phone boxes plastered with stickers and liked the pocket bell messages, but I did see that the billboards over by the parking lot (near the hotel area) seem to be from the future. I wasn't in Japan at the time (first came in 91) but I wonder if they had host clubs in the 80s, especially ones with guys with Final Fantasy haidos like the billboard showed.

Agreed. I'm playing Ishin at the minute and while the game is great, it's very Japanese. It's quite hard to explain, but many of the sub stories and events that happen in the game have definitely been geared towards a Japanese audience. I think localisation would be a nightmare for the developers.

It's great if you're interested in Edo Japanese culture though, and a LOT of people are. I can't see it ever getting localised and I don't think it'd review too well over here, either. KHH Sub's have a great guide that helps. Playing it alongside that isn't taking away any of the fun for me - I'd say it's worth importing if you can get it for a decent price.
