SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

Just to clarify, with Skylines I can follow a sim round and they have a house and a job? Not just random sims like SC5? I know about the traffic problems and I'm fine with it. Any sting it might have is softened considerably by allowing mods.

Yep. In the stream with Quill18 they go into this. Your sim will have a job and a house, which they keep unless something happens (e.g. house is demolished, work goes out of business, etc.).

Great stuff thanks.

(OMG not junior anymore excite:D)

Also, just found this quote on the FAQ:

How will citizen simulations work?
Every citizen in your city will be simulated. They have persistent homes and jobs, and they will try to find the best travel route to their destinations. Education and land value changes may influence a citizen to change their home or job though.

Cheers. It reads like my perfect game, SC5 has me keeping it at arm's length until release though. Damn you EA. Loving every bit of info about Skylines though (except the name ha.)

I hope this game gets to be really good. I've never played Sim City 2013, but honestly, after the shitstorm, doesn't look like I gonna like it. Cities XL was pretty fun (I spent 40 hours on it), but isn't as good as the olders Sim City (also the performance is really crap), XXL is the same game with the problems, so no way for me too :P

Everything about this one seems quite good, except for the dissapearing cars, though it's not something I really care.

I'm still on the fence for this, mostly for performance concerns. A Paradox published game made on Unity raises some flags there.

Every preview I've seen has said the performance is fantastic, and they've said the same thing about CO's last 2 games, which also used the same engine.

On this talk of DX12, what improvements could we see in city building games with this?

Cheers.

People are referring to the ability to push more draw calls with DX12. With the expanded amount of draw calls, the simulation can be more realistic. As was said earlier in the thread, the ideal simulation is an agent-based simulation that perfectly simulates real life.

What I still wonder is how they differentiate in commuting/work/free time and the time progretion of the game. A day lasts a few seconds ingame so a cim will spend "days" in commute. Not a criticism but something I wonder.

Are industry companies only productive while employees are at work? So is there a higher productivity if the cims have as short a commute as possible?

I probably should ask those question over at the paradox forums :)

More realistic and/or just general performance improvement when having a huge city with a ton of shit on screen.

Should be pretty major for games like this actually.

Those are the sort of things I'm wondering about. One of the limitations of this game that I don't like is that there seems to be no day/night cycle. I don't know how this affects things like rush hour.

Paradox.
Consider me sold.

I've seen this sentiment expressed a lot, but having never owned a Paradox published game I'm not really sure what makes them so great. Would anyone care to go into some detail?

There is no rush hour.

Im stupid excited for this game, but Im holding off til a week or so after release. I played the SC2013 beta and barfed uncontrollably at how bad it was. All I want is an SC4 HD game, hell, it doesn't even need to be fully 3d, it can stay isometric.

Im really happy this game has built in mod support. I had a lot of fun taking community buildings and repurposing them (making landmarks or plopables into growables, changing them to R, C, or I if they fit) in my cities. Im a little saddened by the fact that the largest growable is only 4x4, but I know this is a small team and many things will change after launch. Im sure mods will also help a lot of these smaller issues.

Hopefully growable size is something they fix after release. That and adding all the transportation options missing and modular air/sea ports.

That's a pretty broad question. They have 246 published titles on Steam.

Like any publisher, they've published poor quality games and good ones. One place to start would be GAF's grand strategy thread. That covers their traditional games like Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria, and Hearts of Iron.

Cities in Motion, developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive, is the series most applicable to Cities: Skylines. Those games cover a small niche of public transportation simulators.

That might be the best way to summarize Paradox's catalog - they cover a lot of niche genres.

They develop and publish a very well respected family of strategy games which includes the Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron and Victoria games.

As a publisher they have put out both good (Teleglitch) and bad (Gettysburg: Armoured Warfare - apparently...never played it myself), as well as the Cities in Motion games by the same developer as Cities: Skylines.

I think a strategy game published by Paradox gets a certain amount of legitimacy simply because their in-house stuff is so well received.

When it comes to the quality of Paradox games, I can only recommend the recent AngryJoe (if you can stand him :) ) Interview with the Paradox Bosses. He asks some hard questions and they are very open about how their QA a few years ago was pretty shit (Sword of the Stars 2) and how they improved it now.

plus I liked how TotalyMoo (Community Manager) emphasized in an interview posted above, how he tries to keep the hype down and not create false expectations....

From what I've been reading, the game is running really well on modest hardware.

I'll be playing on my laptop which has an ivy bridge i7 and geforce 570m so with any luck, I'll be able to hit 1080/60.

Dx12 frees up a shitload of CPU resources. You could actually calculate
more agents in the sandbox and might even be able to also tell the gpu to draw more
agents.

Agents can be anything like a person walking, car driving, etc.

Also there's an AMA from 1800 CET regarding modding today!
https://www.reddit.com/r/CitiesSkylines/comments/2wuvxb/developer_ama_feb_25th_main_topic_is_modding/

TotalyMoo said:
Greetings community!
We'll be hosting an AMA over at /r/IAmA[1] on February 25th, the main topic will be more details about modding but other questions are of course accepted. So if you have something I've failed to answer in the sticky please bring it here!
We go live at 18:00 CET and will feature CO CEO Mariina Hallikainen, programmer Damien Morello, artist/game designer Henri Haimakainen and myself (mostly the former 3, though).
Prepare your questions; sharpen your metaphorical swords and get ready to be informed.
Cheers, John

That is probably the best interview I've seen with a developer, so much truth and no PR bullshit.

I'm quite excited for this, I haven't yet pre-ordered but definitely going to grab it. Burnt too badly by SimCity and want that city sim feeling.

I'm curious to see what will be discussed in this Q&A regarding modding. Hopefully it reveals a lot of exciting and potential features post-release.

Recorded the interview this morning. It's a little over 30 minutes long and pretty much ALL of the questions were answered. We'll be playing the interview this Saturday during our radio show, In-Game Chat. You can listen live online or watch the show on Twitch.

Another 21:9 shot from TotallyMoo. There's also going to be another Dev Dairy (probably on modding) released alongside the AMA

Play Cities In Motion series. They are good (albeit small) team of devs there. Passionate about what they do but they make stable products.

They started with 5 people and now are 13. Just 13 people working on this game and it seems they've been able to accomplish what a mega publisher like EA couldn't do.

That's some beautiful DoF. I love how the game has this realistic, miniature look to it when zoomed in.

Does it default to a kind of side-on view when this zoomed in, or can we also zoom in real close from a top down view(not that you'd be able to see much this way)?

Cool, looking forward to it.

They're just emulating tilt-shift photography. Sim City did it too. If you don't know what tilt-shift is you should google it; it is an interesting effect.

I really want to believe this is the next coming of sim city 4 but I've been burned so many times before. Not sure if I should pre-order or not. If it is the next coming I would like to get those pre-order bonus items. If it is not the next coming I would like to have my 30 dollars to spend on something else.

You can wait and see if modders make better versions of the preorder items.

Paradox has put pre-order items up for sale separately with their past games, so you might be able to get them later if you're not sure on pre-ordering.

Spend $17 on Nuuvem and don't worry about it.
