Apple smartwatch conference - March 9th

I'm in for a Retina MacBook Air. Not really expecting much else. Maybe they can turn the Apple Watch around but it hasn't been sounding too good lately.

This is my current position. Not too sure about it all, but really interested.

Without derailing the thread I will briefly explain what basically sold me on it. Unexpectedly, I got it for Christmas as a gift as I kinda wanting one and my gf surprised me.

A week into owning it, I was driving somewhere and a road was closed with no diversion signs up to help out. I was a bit unsure where I was going so I basically asked my watch to take me there. My phone started turn by turn voice navigation whilst it was in my coat pocket, on the seat next to me and my watch would buzz and display instructions in good time before I had to make a turn.

The watch would also display the distance to the next turn etc. It was a little sat nav on my wrist. It was at this moment where I basically thought this whole smart watch thing could really have an impact.

Im really intrigued about how they will handle refreshes of the iWatch, specially considering they are planning to sell watches that could be thousands of dollars, surely they are not thinking of replacing those yearly, right?

That is pretty useful. My car has a navigation system (although a little wonky at times), but I typically use my iPhone 6. Having that information on my wrist, by the wheel, seems like it would be pretty convenient. Not sure that would completely sell me, though.

They could get away with a yearly refresh, but I'm not so sure that's the right way to go. Then again, the iPhone does just fine every year.

I don't think Apple will have any problem with refreshing the iWatch every year. Their laptops and desktops cost thousands of dollars and are refreshed every year too...

Wireless AC Apple TV please

I'd much rather have an AppleTV puck replace the AirPort Express so you could use it as a router, tbh, but it makes sense that if it'd be capable of doing that it'd also be capable of receiving wireless AC.

AppleTV is really, really clearly being held back until they can make some serious and dramatic changes to it, though.

iPhone is subsidized though and Macbooks are productivity tools that last a long time, yearly refreshes of the Watch with substantial new features might be hard to swallow especially for owners of top of the line multi-thousand dollar gold iWatches.

Regardless, Im super intrigued to see what they are planning regarding that.

A lot of talk about retina Airs in this thread. The latest rumors about the new MacBook Air didn't sound like it would have a retina display.

I have my eye on a 38mm Space Black Watch with a Black Link Bracelet. I need a new MBP soon, it'd be cool if they offered them in Black, too.

Depending on the price of the watch, I may wait. If they offer financing, I'll most likely jump on that.

Don't need a new laptop as I got a 13 inch retina last year, but Retina Air is definitely my future laptop.

Hope it is announced this year.

True, but the multi-thousand dollar Macs don't have massively cheaper versions that are identical apart from materials, so the justification is somewhat different. You have to be rather flushed with cash to go for a gold iWatch, so I think such people will not feel all that aggrieved when a new version comes along.

I hope the Apple Watch is cheaper than speculation is letting on it will be. I don't think pricing it over $300 would be a wise decision.

I feel like paying over that much would deter a lot of consumers from trying it out when there is already strong competition in the Smart Watch space (Like Pebble) that offer considerably cheaper options.

Apple has already announced that the base model Apple Watch Sport will be $350. No other pricing announcements, but that's the cheapest it'll be.

Apple announced last September that it'll "start" at $349, so it's already above $300.

It'll be the only watch that can integrate with iOS in a deep way, it's just a matter of if people think the features and user experience is worth the extra dough.

I'm not in the Apple ecosystem, so the Apple Watch is absolutely useless for me. But I do like the idea of smartwatches, I want a smartwatch, and I want to see the smartwatch industry succeed. So I'll definitely be keeping on eye on the Apple Watch. Hopefully Apple can announce some stuff at this conference to help with the rather rocky reception the Apple Watch got.

I am hoping that the base model will be no more than $379 in Canada but it will probably be $399.

Apple.ca : Available in 2015
Apple.com : Coming Early 2015

Yup, Canada getting it later.

I wouldn't read too much into it, when was the last time Apple announced something that was released in Canada later?

The first iPad is the last one I recall. That's there last big "revolutionary" device.

I imported it from someone in Texas.

I think both sizes will probably be the same price.

Why? We already know the bigger size has slightly better battery life.

Smaller size will generally be more attractive on women, sure, but I expect around a $100 premium for the bigger ones.
