Ok, so the CEO here just asked me what you can do with the watch if you don't have your phone. I assume it still keeps time and you can set calendar stuff and little things like that, right? Anybody have a full list of things you can do if your phone is elsewhere?

Pretty sure you can use Apple Pay seeing as everything that happens during a payment is done vendor-side.

It also has 8GB of storage that you can load music onto, which is pretty useful if you're going for a run or something.

Buy the Edition edition.

LOL.

I'm taking the third option and backing the Pebble Time kickstarter. I backed the $400 tier for the regular version (to give to my mom for her birthday), and a Steel version (for me). Maybe I'll up my pledge to the next tier up to get two Steels.

Why is HBO NOW a separate app and brand from GO? Sounds like identical content that they should use the same app for since you just login to GO.

Doubt Apple Pay is usable. I think the security model is that the watch is actively paired with your phone which you are logged into. Plus the secure store is on the phone itself, the watch I don't think carries any data like that.

Haha, I was telling a coworker how Apple TV would be exclusive launch of HBO Now and he said, "HBO GO?" I said, "No, HBO Now". He said, "Oh, I thought is was called HBO GO." I said, "There is an HBO GO, but this is HBO Now". Then he said, "WTF is the difference?" ROFL

It does. It's copied during pairing and deleted when removed from your wrist.

Yep, no Apple Pay unless you've already put the watch on and verified it via the phone as I understand it.

One is for people who subscribe by cable. The other is for cable-cutters like me who still want HBO.
It's pretty simple to me.

I think what he and I are thinking: why not just add an extra option in the HBO GO app with "Stand-a-lone HBO subscription". And you're done.

Damn it, double post!

I think the assumption is that this is all done automatically for security reasons.

It's probably something like "phone must have been unlocked via fingerprint at least once since pairing."

HBO Go isn't offered outside the U.S. In Canada, for example, HBO is operated by license holder Corus Entertainment, which has its own app for multiple stations.

I have acces to HBO Go and, well, I'm definitely not a U.S. citizen (and I don't live in the United States, either). HBO Go is offered everywhere around the world.

Where I live, it works like this:

- Activate HBO via your cable provider
- Watch HBO via your cable provider or download the HBO Go app
- In the HBO Go app, select your cable provider
- Give up a registration code you get from your cable provider and create an HBO Go account
- Done

Edit I read your comment about Canada and I now realize that it's set up different all around the world. I find that odd.

Whenever you take Apple Watch off your wrist, you need to re-authorize Apple Pay with Touch ID. This is done automatically when you unlock your phone. It's the reason you don't have to use Touch ID for Apple Watch payments.

iPhone 5 peasants like me are screwed or unlock via pin works just as well?

If the Apple ID password is necessary, at least I hope that it prompts for that every morning after the Watch is slapped back on.

edit:

A passcode is required for setting up Apple Pay with the Apple Watch, and it has to be re-entered every time the watch is put back on after being removed to unlock Apple Pay. A payment is made by tapping the side of the Apple Watch twice and holding it near a payment terminal. According to Re/code, it does not look like users must have their iPhones with them to make payments with the Apple watch after linking.

Alright, passcode is enough. Sweet.

What's the posibilty of 3rd party straps for the apple watch ? (Aside for the Sports since that strap is probably attached inside of the case.)

Extremely high. In fact, someone's already working on adapters so that any watch band will work with the apple watch

I wish this were a joke post. Can't you just wait for 2nd gen bruh?

I don't get this post. At one stage I was going to buy three one for my wife and daughter also. So no one should buy 1st gen?

However I've calmed myself and I'm going to buy just the one and try it first.

I can't wait to purchase the iWatch and iPhone 6+. I can't wait to run my marathons with a 6" smartphone strapped to my arm and my new $10,000 watch.

I've asked before but can anyone confirm if u need to run with your phone? That would be horrible and defeat the purpose of having the watch.

Are they effectively saying there's no gyro or accelerometer in the watch?

There is no GPS in the watch. If it's not near your phone it'll track heart rate and steps - but not distance.

There must be motion tracking in the watch, even for just raising your wrist to check the time

Why not? My phone doesn't need GPS to track distance, it does it based on steps I think.

I may be wrong. But, the phone doesn't have GPS - so any function that would need it, you're out of luck for at a minimum.

I imagine tracking distance based on steps would be highly inaccurate.

UNLESS any algorthim has a constantly recalibrating measure based on actual distance and steps. Like when you have your phone it records an ACTUAL distance base on GPS, say 10km, and 5000 steps, so when you don't have your phone, and you say, make 2500 steps, it says you've walked 5km. and cosntantly readjusts your steps to distance factor accordignly as it gets more info.

like ACTUAL smartness.

Hmm. I have jogged exactly the same route for years and years. I'll be sure to test that theory in a few weeks. Like, I jog literally exactly the same route through the city and around the lake and back home. Absolutely no variation. I could do it blind.
