New MGS5 The Phantom Pain Announcement on Wednesday

MGS4's worldwide June release date was announced February 26, 2008 so there's definitely a precedent for announcing the date around this time.

Most of the story in MGSV is self contained, Ground Zeroes is the prologue and also features some backstory on previous events.

At the very least, watching the story of Ground Zeroes or playing it would be enough to catch you up to the events of Phantom Pain, there might be references you'll miss having not played the other games in the series but the overall story of MGSV should be understandable.

I dunno man I think without playing at least MGS3 + PW anyone playing MGSV will be totally lost

I don't really agree with this. The story for the series has to be experienced in its full glory.

If you can't play them (in order of release btw, not chronological order), then at least look up plot summaries or watch LPs.

It's gonna end with a phone call between Solid and Boss, with Solid voiced by Hayter, and Boss by Sutherland, asking Solid to infiltrate Mother Base.

That is like my dream scenario, with MGS VI being a full fledged remake of MG1&2 with reworked story/scenarios/environments, but that ending is too predictable so it won't happen.

For the base plot of Snake taking revenge I don't think those would matter too much, but of course lots of references and possible twists would be lost of people who haven't experienced these.

That would be ideal but not everybody has the time or the money and devices to play every game in the series.

Gametrailers did a really good retrospective on the series that also contains plot details for anyone interested.

MGS is one of the few games I disagree with it. There are way too much references between one another. You may play GZ and believe you've understood most of it, but in reality you will know little to nothing without knowing Snake and Big Boss history, and other characters such as Ocelot.

Yeah that's true but if it's true that
Volgin is back
then it seems like MGS3 might be really important.

Guys I've never played a mgs game neither can play them, is there something i can read to get up to dat on the story to play mgs v?

What do you mean by that? If you have a 360, a PS3, a PS2, or a Vita you can play a good amount of the games in the series.

For the full experience, I'd imagine that playing through MGS3, PW, and GZ would be recommended. I mean, I can't imagine what GZ alone would have been like had I not played Peace Walker beforehand and gotten the 'secret' ending.

Yeah that's true but if it's true that

Hell
The Boss
might be back if some rumors are to be believed, but I'm sure both of those are either hallucinations or phantoms, still, it would be nice if MGSV offers some sort of backstory material for newcomers.

Maybe he doesnt have any of these platforms? Thats pretty common. Of all of them, I only have the Vita.

Also, he may not even have enough time to play everything he likes and all the main series.

Yeah, the ideal would be to play them all. But since that may be a very hard and time consuming task, he may do better just reading a wiki.

Not at all. There's absolutely no confirmation of that. They have a placeholder for a release date if and when they decide to show it. That's all that means.

Kojima is a troll, yes, but I doubt this is anything other than a release date announcement. Every other time GAF got hyped about a potential date reveal, it was self-manufactured. This time we are being told that there is big news coming with a countdown timer.

Plus, it's GDC - the same place TPP was confirmed to be a Metal Gear game.

Pretty confident that we'll be happy on Wednesday.

Two big games in one month? Nah. At least i hope not. They should give each other room to breath. If MGS does release in June i'm sorry but i'll be going to Gotham first.

I actually wanted Batman to come out in October since i think the cold weather fits playing the game. But i can't wait any longer.

Each to their own, I'll be going to Afghanistan, Africa and only God knows where else.
MGS V will have its fans who will buy it day one. Batman it's fans who will do the same. They can exist side by side.

From June, Two Phantoms Were Born.

No.

Kaz and BB's relationship is going to be a huge plot point. People will also not know who are what the Patriots and Zero are. And there are going to be so many returning characters like Liquid etc. Those will have no impact on players who have not played the previous games. I could make a whole list why you should play the previous games.

Here's hoping that they're not preparing to troll us... again.

Even if it's old. Is it happening then?

Could you imagine the scene where you kill the Boss in Fox Engine? Hnng

It's all exciting that we're finally getting the release date, but it'll be a bit disappointing if it ain't accompanied by a trailer.

The Boss' VA did come back for VA sessions. But it will most likely just be tapes like in PW. Or maybe even flashbacks.

Volgin in the first trailer was just BB's hallucination, Psycho Mantis was fucking with his mind.

Well like I said, Kojima is going to deliver the trailer after his message. He's not going to reveal it himself through words. It would be odd to be honest.

He has shown pictures of his trailer-making station recently, so it's known that there is one being worked on. Hopefully it's shown for this.

But you're saying that we'll be getting the trailer on Wednesday as well

Edit: Nevermind, I was a bit stupid there. I see what you mean.

Definitely try to find a way to play them if you can, but if you can't...

There's something there:

The UN want Liquid Ocelot assassinated, so they send in Solid Snake to kill Liquid Ocelot

I thought that was the Colonel (who is part of the UN) who wanted him assassinated, as he said it was something Snake would do for him. Snake would infiltrate the battlefield as UN agent, right?

It could just be a template code that is used on all main "game pages" on Konami's website.

Yeah, that makes sense.

It would be awesome if we could get an updated Metal Gear Solid Database like we did for MGS 4

This is how it goes: a new trailer with a new music putting together all that we have seen in previous trailers, finishing with a pre order request, after this, boom the lights go out, and we start seeing snake climbing a rock , we start to think "not this shit again" and when he takes out the googles: BAMM , Solid snake and the infamous David Hayter voice: KEPT YOU WAITING UH?
Release date appears on screen: 5/5/2015

V has come to!

If the June rumors are true then announcing the release date now would be similar to the gap between MGS4 release announcement and launch.

Just saying.
