SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

You will be able to expand adjacent to any tiles you already have. So, you could technically just expand in a single line if you wanted to. You are not restricted to a square or rectangular shape in the end.

Ok cool. I figured this was the case I just hadn't seen it yet so figured I'd ask.

I haven't even looked at the Map Editor or the Asset Editor. Maybe I'll focus my stream on those things tonight.

Quill has a great video on the map editor, it's much better than I had hoped for. In fact, it's fantastic.

Why fantastic? What else would be in there other than elevation and water/wind/resource levels?

Yep! No problem!

When I first heard about the tiles, I had a bit of disappointment, hoping that the entire map would just be open and available, like Cities XL/XXL. But, after watching videos and reading through the Dev Diaries, I am 100% okay with the tiles method. It seems like it's a great way to help focus your planning so that you don't sprawl too much in the beginning.

Anybody in this thread start working on a mod for the game yet? Are the active modders right now using copies of the game yet? I'm interested in working on some mods, but have no modeling experience at all.

I need to know how to make LODs and then I will be doing a few buildings (mostly the important ones from my real life city, and maybe doing something like the NeoGAF office lol).

Also we need water and dry canals as soon as possible, or at least ploppable walls that work on inclined terrain and also can touch water. That would probably solve the problem of making real life city rivers.

It has lots of tools for landscape shaping, it can import and export greyscale heightmaps, you can assign and change starting tiles and available tiles, it's just super robust and extremely powerful but yet easy to use.

No kidding, it will even be super useful to make Simcity 4 maps in it due to the heightmap exporting, hell CSL is almost worth my $21 just as a map editor for Simcity 4!!!!!

I tried some real heightmaps I found on Reddit and work like a charm, so cool and simple!

So, umm...something happened last night when I finished streaming. I can't say what just yet, because I need to talk to the publisher first, but I might have some VERY good news later on today.

You got a bunch of prerelease keys that you can give to all of us YAAAAy!

:)

Oh wow, that heightmap part is indeed cool, thanks for the headsup.

You're so money and you don't even know it.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you give me a key now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

Okay, this game definitely has my attention now.

I am thoroughly disappointed with the Cities XL games due to the annoying memory leak problems.

I'm familiar with Colossal's work on the Cities in Motion titles, so I'm certainly on board with this game. Looks like a worthwhile purchase indeed.

Because, it looks good by the videos we've seen, the feature set is great, the developer dialogue has been excellent, and it's getting great word of mouth from people who have hands on with it already?

Or, we are all just starving for a new and good city builder, LOL! For the record I've not bought it yet, but after tomorrow's video swamping I may just cave...

Because it's not a Paradox Game Studio game, and Colossal Order's games had been stable and bug free in their releases? And that they have been very transparent about showing their game so far? It's not like EA Maxis is some great studio. It's certainly not the Maxis of old.

Can I get some impressions of the Mac and Linux builds compared to the Windows build? Or is that embargoed too?

CK2 and EU4 were pretty solid at launch. They're nowhere near as bad as they used to be.

Also note this is a Paradox published game as opposed to being the main developer, Colossal Order is the dev.

it's essentially 33% off at launch. I can put up with a few bugs at the beginning to save that much

Honestly? For the price I paid on GMG it doesn't have to be that much better than Simcity (which I got at launch) to be worth it. It cannot possibly be wors, no wa. Hell what I saw from Sips is already an improvement improvement. I'm very sure I can crank out enough enjoyment for the money I payed to not care too much. Unless of course we're talking about game breaking Bugs and stuff like that.

Now I'm not saying that I'm willing to buy broken games, but for the price paid and if I can get 20-40 hours of enjoyment I'd say money was spent well.

All they have to do compared to simcity (imo) is improve traffic and how the AI worked and make bigger cities. From what I can tell one of those have already been cleared.

Ok, after watching some streams, looking at screenshots, and reading impressions, I'm ready to issue a wholehearted mea culpa.

Looks like this could be the real deal!

I love the Paradox and CO teams' snarky references to recent gaming marketing catchprases. It makes me feel like they share the same disdain of gimmicks as I do, and want to concentrate on making good gameplay.

edit: These guys are hilarious :lol

So the game is now #1 on Steam and Paradox's CEO is saying he thinks this game has set a record for pre-orders for them.
Well the price obviously helps, but yea, #1 on Steam should mean some pretty good numbers for them. We're still 5 days away, and of course with a game like this, sales could continue strong if word-of-mouth stays good and the modding takes off.

Though I think I'll give Chirpier a shot in a corner before I turn that bool to false;

It comes with 5 real-life famous buildings (Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Brandenburg Bridge, Arc de Triomphe, and Grand Central Station), the soundtrack, and a digital artbook, if I remember correctly.

Edit: Whoops. Moggio beat me to it. I should have checked first lol.
