SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

I'm interested in seeing how large the populations can get given how large Quill's city is. He can buy 2 more tiles and is around 200k. I'm curious how big a processing hit the mods will be for getting extra tiles. Some of my favorite mega cities in SC4 were the huge sprawling metropolis's with giant low density suburbs.

Until we have machines capable of tracking millions of agents in real-time, each with basic individual AI, I prefer Skylines method of decoupling the "simulation" from the agents. It's mostly just a fancy visualizer at the end of the day, but at least they can focus on making the simulation and agent behavior more realistic.

Sim City being a slave to the day/night cycle added extra complexity to an already broken simulation. While a true day/night cycle should be the goal, we still don't have the necessary horsepower to make it happen.

I love looking at cities at night. That's really all it is for me. The visuals are all I need, not necessarily any gameplay changes. This is still the most exciting release this year so far.

It's very possible one of the reasons they skipped even a cosmetic day/night cycle is because of the extra development time to rig up the nighttime lighting on all of the buildings. Hopefully if this game is a big success for them they can spend the time adding day/night in.

First time I've seen a graph, so I thought I'd share.

There's a population cap of 1 million. Going from streams I'm not sure I'll ever want to make a city that populous/dense.

That's actually a little bit of a disappointment, but there's a lot of room to work in that limitation.

Since they've already said we'll be able to mod the available number of buildable tiles, I'm sure that population cap will be moddable as well. And assuming your machine can handle that massive load, the sky's the limit!

I can imagine it. If they won't stretch the time of days or stretch the light/dark over the span of some days, then I can imagine the epilepsy problems we may have.

Last time i looked the sun didn't disappear out of the sky in an instant, its gradual. Even at the games fast speed i dont think it will be a flash rave display!

look how big cities are with "just" 200k.
having a 1 million city is massive

No, I see that. SC4's regions made it really impossible to ever feel limited though. I would've enjoyed something similar here. I'm just really turned off by the hard edges that form as you run out of tile space.

I don't want any sort of gameplay implementation..... I'd just like to see the city light up a night. If it lasts 2 "weeks", whatever.... Or maybe just have a toggle so we can turn nighttime on/off, for funsies.

Or winter. Give me snow. Although that'd probably take a remodel of every building...

I think the snow could be done with some texture updates. It won't look as realistic as doing accumulating snow meshes, but with textures it could look as good as it does in Banished:

Man, my school's computer lab let me install steam and download games but directX11 wont work because it needs administrative rights. That was my one chance at being able to run this game since my surface pro is shit at gaming. Ah well :( Is this ever going to come to consoles?

Edit: Actually, its 'Direct 3D 11' is that the same thing as DirectX 11?

Bought. March 10th is my birthday. I was going to go to work that day...now I am not.

I played so much SimCity 2000 as a kid. It was like a living, breathing Lego set. This is the modern SimCity we deserve.

Time to get cozy with the system admins at your school.

Since it is running on Unity 4, it's certainly possible for the game to run on the current gen consoles. However, it would still take a ton of retooling and a massive UI overhaul, and Colossal Order are a tiny studio. So...probably not.

Maybe Skylines 2?

I got Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, Portal 2, and Team Fortress 2 all to run flawlessly at max settings and +60FPS. I think it was just a weird issue with Metro 2033. It might have been the PhysicX engine that was giving me problems. I do remember having a similar issue when installing Metro 2033 on my old computer. so maybe I do have a chance at running Cities: Skylines.

The specs on this machine are

Quadro 4000
2 GB GDDR 5
6 core Intel E5-2630 @ 2.3 GHz

Will that be enough to run it at like medium settings and a low resolution (~720p?)

Ok, building my Spotify soundtrack for this game. Obvious inclusions are the SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 soundtracks. There are some truly fantastic songs in SC3000. What else is great city-building music?

Between those two, I'd say you're pretty much set. SC13 had some decent music, too.

Going to pre-purchase this when I get home from work, is there a pre-load available on Steam?

If you purchase from GMG you don't get a steam key till release day. But you do save almost $10.

are you in 3d animation or something? why do you have a Quadro?

I'd really like a day/night cycle purely for aesthetics and atmosphere. It can be completely decoupled from the actual passage of in-game time, but I think in that other game it made it "feel" like time was passing.

It was almost hypnotic, seeing the sun go down...night...dawn...

It's on Unity 5, btw, but probably not using most of it's new features given that it's only been available for some developers since last summer (and it was far from ready back then).

Judging from the reactions so far from people who can play it now, I'm expecting very glowing reviews. Sure does seem like a city builder done right and proper. Finally!!!

Mmm, was going to ask, based off all these playthroughs and impressions, can we expect to see positive reviews?

I think the game will land around 7-8 score, much better than SC2013 but will probably complain that it's not "Sim City" and lacks certain stuff from previous games

Probably, but I'd also expect some lower scores from reviewers who think things are too difficult if they can't figure out why their city "suddenly" disintegrates into a mess due to bad road/traffic management.

Question about the map choices... in the streams I see that there are 9 choices for map style (at least in the pre-release copy). Does anyone know if the created map for each of these map choices is exactly the same or are they dynamic? More specifically, if you choose the "Green Plains" map is it exactly the same layout for everyone every time it is chosen or does it change?

Mmm, was going to ask, based off all these playthroughs and impressions, can we expect to see positive reviews?

I think so. They've got several things going for them in their favor:

1. Nearly all the major streamers have been streaming the game much more than they planned because they like it, their viewers like it, and it's getting some of them more subs. Since some of them will also be reviewing the game, I'm pretty sure that they'll have a more positive disposition towards the game than negative.

2. Price. You can get the thing for bucks. The recent resentment for AAA game prices works in Skylines' favor, and will increase the "value" score for those reviewers who factor that in.

3. Lack of alternatives. The city building genre is sorely lacking a new game that's actually good. They only have to be better than SimCity and Cities XXL to have Skylines look good by comparison. Considering that all of its recent competitors are shit, well, that's not very hard.

4. Pre-release marketing push. Paradox has been brilliant by getting exploding the mindshare associated with this game by giving out free preview copies to streamers and letting them play the game. The hype and buzz surrounding the game is trending in a positive direction, and that's got to have at least a subconscious effect on most review writers.

edit:

Yeah, that's one of the only things I can see that could potentially be a source of negative reviews. If you suck at the game, or don't understand how it works, it might get frustrating. I call it, the IGN God Hand Review Effect.

I probably shouldn't have bought DBZ Xenoverse when it came out. I haven't had that much time to play it to begin with, and once Skylines comes out, I doubt I'll touch it much at all, unless my friends get it too and want to play. Oh well :lol

Regardless, it's a pretty good game, though.

Watching the streams, I'm wondering if some people might be building too many offices. Offices are non-polluting, but they don't produce as many goods as regular industrial buildings. It also seems like some people's commercial buildings aren't getting enough goods, and can't import them fast enough. But that might just be a traffic issue.

You might actually be onto something.

What I would like to test is to see how much goods can a cargo train station or cargo ship harbor import vs how much a block of industrial can produce, and the pros and cons of each.

Same here, hnnngggg, I really need this game now, not tuesday.

This game basicly combines Railroad Tycoon/Transport Tycoon, Tropico and Sim City. Atleast for me.
