SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

The main area is 10km x 10km so that might be why unless you mean the whole square, that's 18x18. ;)
I feel stupid atm.
It does seem off still. If the main area is supposed to be 10km by 10km, that is. Google Maps tells me the main area I chose in Terrain Party is actually something like 7.3km wide, so as one of the Redditors mentioned, latitude might not be factored into the app. Or maybe I'm just confused too.

Wait, are the 25 tiles the 10km by 10km area, or is it just the middle 9?

Skylines FAQ via Steam discussion said:
The map consists of tiles. The maximum city size is 9 map tiles, one map tile is 2km x 2km. Players start with the first one and then unlock more land for their city. Players get to choose the tiles from 25 tiles on the map. The area is all seamless so pretty huge cities can be developed.

The cities can be 36 square km, and not necessarily in a square. However there is an option to uncouple the limitation and go bigger, dependant on the player’s hardware."
So, uh, I think I get it now. I think it's just the latitude scaling issue.

I can't stand it guys. I need a fix before the game launches or I'm going to burst.

Should I re install Sim City, or get Cities in motion 2, or maybe Cities XXL (haven't heard good thigns baout that one though)?

1 buildable/buyable square is 2km x 2km, so the area that you can buy from is 5 x 5 of those squares, so 10km x 10km as in 100km^2, the whole map is 9 x 9 or 18km x 18km which would be 324km^2.

- edit -

If all else fails, I can just download png files provided by a official source and stitch together a 18km x 18km of my own.

Right, I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with the web app. Like, if I'm up in Canada a little ways, what Terrain Party claims is 10km is actually 6.8ish. In Iowa it was 7.3km. So, basically, the terrain map generated is currently going to be stretched more the further away from the equator you are, it appears.

I'm playing Banished while we wait. I'm also going to "take nostalgic a tour" of my regions in Simcity 4, just in case CSL is so incredibly good that I never go back to Simcity 4 again.

1 square length is ~1,1km in google maps around where I live. Stitching together pngs it is then.

Don't get me wrong though, terrain party seems to be a good tool even now and if they/he/she can get to work properly/better then it's going to be so amazing.

- edit -

Couldn't I just take 4 pngs with terrain party and stitch them together and the pretty close to a proper scale area? Because now terrain party full 9x9 grid seems to be a bit over 50% of the real thing.

Made this monster in 5 minutes from 4 terrain party images, I hink the image has to be 1081x1081 pixels. Am I correct?
I still have to try the official height map pngs but this didn't seem THAT horrible for the amount of time it took.

I think those seams will produce nasty cliffs. I haven't tried the tool yet, but can you export the area you want and then just use an image editor to scale it to the correct resolution for C:S?

I should've refreshed instead of editing my last post a couple more times.

I feel stupid atm.

The scale is definetly off, a distance that is 4 squares in terrain party should be 8km. The same distance in google maps 3,75km with tape measure and number magic.

Yeah, I should've been 1km short to fit my town and the main town the county I live in but in terrain party but instead of being about 11km apart it's somewhere between 15km and 16km apart.

I blame Mercator.

Yup, I've been playing with it and comparing with the measuring tool in Google Maps and it looks to be about 50% off where I am.

If Quill'18's video is anything to go by then yes. Around 7min mark and forwards.

Same problem here, haven't had a chance to try the actual tool yet. Reddit mentioned something about the images needing to be 1081x1081 pixels and the terrain party images are also that big so that might be the size you need.

Shouldn't have been watching streams since the embargo lifted. Feel like I've seen all the game offers, no surprise or discovery left. :/

is the paradox stream hazy because of air pollution or is it just the settings? (or my eyes)

So watching this stream...

http://www.twitch.tv/etalyx/v/3856749

among others, it seems the road building is completely fucked and doesn't seem to have any rudimentary 'common sense' algorithms at all, with one way roads being one way in the opposite direction at either end of the road

The roads seem to work rather straightforward watching Quill's road overview. Are those players not dragging roads in the right direction?

So, someone already put this together for Cities Skylines;

Make your own terrain maps for import into Cities using a real world map.

This game is going to have a rabid modding and fanbase.

We tried this last night during the stream and it worked fine. However, and it's probably more my fault for rushing into it without really reading over what's supposed to be done, I couldn't load any saved maps after using it. Had to delete what I'd downloaded from the site to get it going again.

And again, this is likely on me and not on the mod itself or anything, but it does actually work.

Pretty sure that's the Gaffer who's going to be giving away an early access game code later today.

Yeah, around 2am word made it to the chat room that the mod was on Steamworks. The mod itself didn't seem to work. You could download it but it didn't show up in the game as a mod. It didn't show up anywhere. So the guy uploaded a gamesave with the 25 tiles unlocked and that's what we played with until about 4:30am.

His city was probably fixable, but it was in bad shape as soon as I loaded it up. He was completely out of money and WAY WAY into debt with about 60 to 80 thousand people. Tons of abandoned buildings. So, instead of trying to fix it, I tried to kill the population. I eventually got down to 0 people.

And the chirpy bird thing finally stopped updating when no one was left in the city.

Also, the music gets oddly ominous when you're alone out there.

not sure what you mean by this but one thing to take note is that depending on the direction you slide the one way road when building it does affect the direction.

so there's a population cap of one million per city? That's a little disappointing (even if I assume it'll probably be modded out within a week or so of release), I assume it means that there aren't too many high capacity buildings in the game yet.

I'm disappointed no streamer has tried to replicate the Magic Roundabout yet.

my god, this is the stuff nightmares are made of lol

Why does that even matter? City building games aren't about surprises or discoveries, they are about creating cities and tweaking them to perform as best as you can. After over a decade with it I know every little detail there is to know about Simcity 4 and yet I can still play it and lose dozens of hours building cities.

Thats two different approaches to game enjoyment, I can see both arguments, but I filled the "getting to know the game"-enjoyment with streams and am PERFECTLY fine with doing so, considering I'll switch into the mode you just mentioned right upon getting it.

There are people who specifically love exploring mechanics and seeing new features though, but those shouldnt have watched any streams :p

That's user error. The game can't fix stupid.. if you build your roads backwards, then backwards they will be.

That's the whole point of a city builder, after all... they don't play themselves, it's up to the player to either do it right, or do it wrong. If your town goes to shit, it's not the game's fault.

Sad there are no height maps for Spain (or I dont seem to know how this works, I can only find street maps like in ggogle right now). I still looking for a good one of my city, Valencia, and surroundings.

The one million number is the supported number of agents they support. These numbers are the officially supported setting Collosal Order will support (just like the 250.000 tree limit per map). These can, and I assume, will be modded by someone.
I haven't actually paid attention if there was a setting in the asset editor, if you can also change the number of people inhabiting a building.

So is this game legit? 21 at gmg is tempting. Any good preview videos?

Depends of what you are after.

Quill18s playlist has a lot of gameplay and some videos about the asset managers. Most people in here are not that keen on hist city management skills though.

Syke Storms has also a lot with tips about what he found out already along the way.

I am watching the Paradox Twitch Stream with a guy from Paradox playing. He has around 200 hours playtime with the game and shares some of his experiences. He also answers questions from people in the chat.

Yep, hundreds of hours of streams and youtube videos, all very glowing in praise so far. It seems like a real modern, fully featured, and fun city builder.
