What do people mean when they call successful Apple stuff overpriced? Like do they know how valuing products works? Capitalism? Any of it? Do they really mean the irrational claims they say make Apple so successful while claiming it is bad or overpriced?

Check that context yo. I refer to stainless, not sport.

Ahh I see I see

Officially? What about sizing and color? I'd love to have a space gray Sport with black band, but I feel like that is going to be $400+.
Officially we've known that the base price of the Apple Watch will be $349. That's all I was referring to. I'm scared that you're right though because that's the exact watch I want too ;___;

Listening to a podcast called debug and it implies the digital crown can theoretically produce haptic feedback.

Gonna be hecka sick for Sega rally.

I wish apple products were available for preorder (and official sale) on Amazon. I've got a lot of credit there. Oh well. Space Grey Sport Watch here we come!

" It’s called the Taptic Engine, a linear actuator inside Apple Watch that produces haptic feedback. In less technical terms, it taps you on the wrist. Whenever you receive an alert or notification, or perform a function like turning the Digital Crown or pressing down on the display, you feel a tactile sensation that’s recognizably different for each kind of interaction. Combined with subtle audio cues from the specially engineered speaker driver, the Taptic Engine creates a discreet, sophisticated, and nuanced experience by engaging more of your senses. "

This is what convinced me to buy one.

Man you folks expecting a $500 steel watch are out of your minds. Why on earth would apple build two entirely complicated manufacturing processes and parallel supply chains for a $150 difference in price?

They wouldn't, because that makes no sense. Going from aluminum to steel/sapphire isn't going to be akin to bumping from 16GB to 32GB on an iPhone

How bout iPhone 5C? iPods? Price difference isn't the best indicator of demand they're willing to indulge with supply.

Supposedly it feels different than phone vibrations, too.

I think this watch offers a pretty unique experience from their promises, but i'm looking forward to seeing how it goes in action. It'd be so great as most of my days are spent in a kitchen and getting my phone out is messy and annoying.

It's expected now or June. MBA is due for Retina after years of it existing on the larger MBP.

Damn. I do see theres definitely a MBA update coming with recent supply going down. See no recent rumors of a retina screen though. The question is do I wait for the next gen or go with the first gen..

anybody has a countdown timer to the event?

no but its 9 hours and 50 minutes away

Guessing if there is a Macbook Air update, it'll be to use Broadwell CPUs. The retina version would be nice, but I'm not expecting it till Summer.

I can't see an Air coming out tomorrow. I'd think they'd want this to be all about the Watch. Air would make more sense at WWDC at the earliest since that's where the original rMBP came out, or fall with the other MacBook updates. Or its own event sometime in the spring or summer.

It's not unprecedented. The Watch was unveiled at the same event as the 6 and 6+.

Apple has too many product lines now to devote an entire conference to any one in particular, and it's been that way for a while.

It's really the biggest game-changer, TBH. Haptic tech is what sets it apart from every other device in its class, since notifications are a smartwatch's bread and butter, so to speak. One common complaint I see in reviews from other brands is that the vibrate is either too strong and a physical annoyance or too weak and does a spotty job of notifying you of anything. When that is your primary signal to engage the device, being an annoyance or poorly implemented seems like an industry-wide oversight.

You'll see a lot more smartwatches with haptic feedback after Apple Watch launches, mark my words.

I'll be watching it even though i'm still not at all interested in the thing.

Hoping they show off more than just the watch.

The steel is going to be more expensive than we all thought it was... maybe not upper tier gruber expensive ($2000?), but its going to be $750-1000.

Apple stuff is always more expensive than not, look at iPhone 5C. Even after everybody saw the leaked photos and cases etc, guesstimates were around $AU500... it ended up being $AU739!!

Gruber is right about one thing - that Apple gave us an initial starting price of $350 to whet our appetite.... people are going to have their heart set on a model and a band... and probably still going to buy because they can. Their marketing is so good.

EDIT: the regular apple watch looks so much better than the sport edition.

If it's too high for the said person to buy it than it is overpriced. There's is no set value on what people deem as the right value.

whilst not quite the same... the iphone vibrate mode on my iphone is terrible as its so damn loud. Not ideal when thats the solution for notifications when on silent mode.

And they ballsed up the speaker on the ipad air 2 which rattles a lot. So Im somewhat skeptical of its haptic feedback

I'll be stuck in meetings all afternoon so I'll miss the immediate reactions/breakdowns when pricing is announced. that's a shame. I was looking forward to that.

anyway, my predictions for the event:

it's not 100% Watch. there's a macbook air 12" retina model shown off. it has awesome battery life, weight and display. it requires USB-C dongles to charge and hookup external storage at the same time (so I remain horribly conflicted about whether I want one).

SS pricing begins at around 500 or 550 with the rubber straps. tops out at 1500 for the black SS with the black link bracelet. (black will have small premium over the regular SS, per the old macbooks)

gold watches come with leather or rubber bands. no expensive all-gold bracelets aimed at the Oil Sheikh market. pricing between 7k and 10k.

lots of app demos on stage with third parties. we've seen less of these since Forstall left but I think this event will highlight how the watch is supposed to fit into your life with many, many examples.

Cook will use his kinda creepy whisper voice to proclaim how amazing sales are of the iphone and how this watch will change our lives when we pair it our our iphones.

edit: final prediction, though I've said this before. no internal upgrade for the S1 chip announced or hinted at. If you want but can't afford a brand new watch when a new one comes out, then you're not Apple's market here.

I'm hoping for no afternoon meeting. I wish Apple had held this off until tomorrow when my boss is gone on a business trip.

I don't think the 12 inch retina Air is coming today.

If it is, it's going to ship with Core-M and will perform like crap, and it makes no sense for it to ship alongside a refreshed 11 inch Broadwell Macbook Air. If it's coming later this year it might be able to use Skylake, and that will help it a lot.

(I wish there were a retina Broadwell Macbook Air coming. There's almost certainly not).

They'll show off the new Macbook Air 12" Retina but also put some time into the Photos app now that it's about to launch on the Mac and puts all your photos on your mobile devices including the Watch. Talk about Yosemite and its user adoption, plus iOS 8 is at like 75% now? Yeah they'll mention that.

We'll see a lot of demos of the Watch. They'll show off the store experience. We'll see loads of apps. They'll show the TV ads. Apple Pay. Maybe the first Apple/Beats bluetooth headphones to go along with the Watch. I am hoping SS pricing begins at $500-600 and that pre-orders are announced for Friday the 13th. On-sale date 4/3 in the US/Canada/China.

Monster has made a successful business out of selling various audio and video cables but everyone here will tell you that their $100 HDMI cable is overpriced. Or do you think that Monster's HDMI cable isn't overpriced?

The Calendar event on http://www.apple.com/live/ is two hours long, so that could be a sign.
Ah good point. Was just trying to figure out how late I was going to be in the office. Wow if it's that long has to be more than just some watch demos and pricing.

I am terrified that there might be a possibility of them showcasing a MacBook air without a clickable trackpad; that would be an incredible step backwards, even with the possibility of force touch.
Opinions and all that but first thing I do on OS X is turn on tap to click. I absolutely hate the crunch sound of the trackpad fully depressed.

people still physically click the trackpad?

Probably the same people that have the keyboard sounds on on their iPhone.

Tapclick takes more effort and more action, nothing about tapclick makes it better, just different.

The Magic Trackpad has a nice clicker on it, so I guess if they go this route, all my future macs will be desktops.

I keep thinking about how cool it would be to have one of these but it'd have to be the regular steel one and the price predicitions are just too high for something that probably needs replacing every few years and is essentially a phone accessory.

Regular watches are allowed to be expensive because they are basically kept for life.

Please, Apple, surprise us with a good price!

I don't mind just tapping for primary click, but I prefer clicking for secondary click, if that makes sense.

However, it being a kinda of small thing that we'd all get used to quickly, it's clear that it should be gone soon.

I keep saying I don't want this, as I've been oogling at the Hamilton Khaki Pilot (the watch from Interstellar), but Apple knows I can't resist their products.

A commodity has a reference value.

A commodity has a reference value.

Monster will claim their build and construction of the cable will offer superior shielding and signal quality, especially for analog based cables. It's the same argument that people will say that the design and build quality is the premium you're paying for with Apple products which separates it from just the sum of the core components on a technical level that can be found cheaper elsewhere.
