Blancpain Le Brassus-Tourbillon, $3m

An obsurd amount of money. But let's compare it something more...sensible (if that can be used when discussing luxury watches)

Are your gold Rolex's made in sweatshop like conditions in China?
Is the Apple Watch?

Everyone saying OMG 10,000 DOLLARS have never looked at watch prices from some of the best manufacturers.

Yes, I have. There's a difference between a 10k Rolex and a 10k gen 1 smartwatch that doesn't even look that good from a manufacturer that doesn't have a history with watches.

Hmm, so, can I choke down $1099 for a Space Grey with a link bracelet? Probably not... looks like a black sport and black rubber band for me

a 10,000 Rolex will be on your wrist for decades in normal cases, its like a part of life. An Apple watch will be updated every few years. traditional watches at 10K are passed down generations. will this be? NO

In This Thread: People who have only ever bought a Timex.

Watches as a fashion accessory are really, really expensive. That's what Apple's banking on.
sure, but how many sought after 5 figure watches are digital? if anything, they're often looked at with a measure of scorn from what I can see. this does a bit more than a typical digital watch, but it's still lacking the 'made like it was hundreds of years ago by hand' appeal.

People going nuts about the price of the solid gold watch.

I'd be going nuts over the 50 dollar price increase for a few grams more aluminium or steel. What the hell?

People saying 10,000 is normal in watch world is crazy. You actually think you will keep this 10,000 Apple Watch for more than 5 years vs the other 10,000 watches which go on for GENERATIONS? its a non-starter price for anyone who thinks clearly. What will they do next year when Gen 2 launches, pay 10,000 again?

Probably sell their original for around $6000-8000 and pay $2000-$4000 to upgrade

basically a vertu watch.

Now yes - I know that high end watches cost a ton of money. But most high end watches don't literally have the same guts as a $50 casio. All you're paying for is the gold and strap.

I run and my iPod shuffle stopped working cuz I would clip it to my waist and it got sweat on it. If I got this watch on my arm and it gets sweaty while I run, can this grained aluminium properly repel and de-ionize my sweat so the watch don't break?

The Pebble is in that price range. Look at it and then look at the Apple Watch.

There are multiple Android Smart Watches that look better than the Apple Watch, and cost less.

Xiaomi, for one. The deign of that smart watch blows this one out of the water completely. The newer LG watch looks great, too.

But, it has the Apple name on it so it will obviously sell a gajillion units, even though there are better products already on the market.

And the semi-annual tradition of Apple's stock price going down immediately after an event continues. This is always a good time to buy.

All you people saying "Nice watches cost well more than $10,000, this shouldn't surprising."

That's bullshit. There are cars that cost $150,000. We're all well aware of that. It's a terrible analogy.

Hey, I'm not saying it's not a stupid price.

10k i can understand if it was able to be upgraded or you could swap it out with a mechanical movement but for a watch that will undoubtedly be obsolete in a years time wow.

Apple is not trying to sell the 10k+ watch to you though. It's in limited quantities and for people to whom buying a 10k or 20k watch every so often is no sweat.

If I buy a $10,000 luxury watch, I can anticipate it working beautifully and maintaining its value for decades. I don't think you can say the same thing about a gen 1 tech product.

I'm incredibly impressed and excited that the watch has wifi and can communicate with the phone over your home network. That answers so many questions for me. Fuck. This is intense.

That laptop though, that laptop.

But everything about it's bigger for that extra $50.

What the fuck do you do with yourself when the software on your $10,000 watch starts chugging?

You're probably so rich that you've moved on to the next generation already so you wouldn't even know.

Watches as a fashion accessory are really, really expensive. That's what Apple's banking on.

Watches from the likes of Vacheron, Jaeger, Omega, Rolex, etc. are intricate pieces of engineering that can be kept, maintained and passed on.

What happens when the battery cells on this 10k watch go bad or the newer model comes out and the OS doesn't support the older models? It's a expensive paper weight at that point.

Everyone losing their shit over the 10K edition.

Calm down, this doesn't concern you.

The people that would seriously consider that option have the money to not care about how long it lasts.

Good point. Ive did say he admired Vertu.

but neither does a $50,000 watch have a thousand times as intricate internal guts as a $50 casio.

price has almost nothing to do with guts.

Smartwatches are probably the worst tech cul-de-sac I've ever seen the industry care remotely about.

The idea of spending $600 on such a thing is at such peak ridiculous, I'd be snap judging the person each and every single one was attached to.
