Some already do, but I wouldn't be surprised if Apple just didn't want to open up iOS for third party watches.
ITT many people don't realize that someone spending $17K on a watch wants to spend $17k on a watch. They don't want to buy a $2k watch or a $400 watch.
The higher price matters to them. They are not bargain hunting. They want to own something that costs much more than you can afford.

The problem is that at the end of the day apple will boost specs each 6-12 months and push updates (Id assume) that could potentially bog down past models just like on iPhones, I know the 10k one is for the rich people that want toys and that's chump change but 5-1k for the normal version just seems ridiculous. (The 5-600 seems high but I can see that being acceptable) but for the black one to be starting at 1k for the band alone?
I don't doubt these will still sell but I think it sets a shitty precedent moving forward that apple keeps charging higher prices for low specs, although this markets a little new to draw that conclusion I suppose

I've gotten nothing but compliments on my Moto 360. And that's before I show them a demo of texting via voice or navigating to a location, or when I recieve a picture message and it shows a preview; they're all wowed.

It doesn't have the display glass curve over the edges like the Apple Watch does, nor is it as thick as the Apple Watch.
On one hand, I backed the Pebble Time Steel:

Nothing much about the Watch was all that new today as compared to what we saw last September when it was unveiled. It pretty much functions about as you would expect. I'm personally going to wait to read some reviews before I think about a purchase, but when I do get one eventually it'll be the black Sport model, probably in the 42mm size.
For those saying that they will just go with the Pebble or one of the other smartwatch models available, that is obviously your purgative, and choice and competition are always a good thing. But the sheer number of apps that have already been announced for the Apple Watch is going to put it way out in front of the competition in terms of what it is capable of. The truly cool, innovative things that a smartwatch can do are going to appear on Apple's device, with Android Wear following suit. The Pebble is likely to always lag in this category.

6-12 months? When do Apple update products more then one per year? But when they update you can sell your old product with little loss in money.

As an AndroidWear owner, I agree. was mostly watching this is see where Apple is going to push Google along. And it seems like they have some nice stuff here.
I haven't been following the news, so the stuff shown was mostly new to me.

The lack of its own functionality is disappointing. It almost feels like it's a stream box (like a vita TV or something) for your phone.

Those multithousand dollar are almost always much higher quality internally. They have specialized in house movements specific to that particular watch. They are not 300 dollar watches with a few grams of gold attached.
This is a good example of the pricing seeming all over the place to me. Very similar aesthetic, same internals, widely different pricing.
I mean, it's an underwhelming device.
It will sell because of the logo, but it's not innovating anything. It's behind its competitors, in most respects.
Frustrating to see better products floundering, but this will flourish even though it's more expensive and less impressive than its counterparts.
I am not into the smart watch thing, however if I had to get one it'll be the new Pebble. It's got a cool ink display, week long battery and like their kick starter video said its not trying to replace your phone or other devices.
I don't need to check my instagram or Facebook wall on my watch. It needs to tell the time, set reminders and let me know if someone is calling or texting.
Upto £13,500 on a watch that will be out of date this time next year is ludicrous.
With that recent thing that showed Apple are making I think $200 on each phone sold I dread to think the $$$ that they'll be getting with these watches.

Apple Watch has a water resistance rating of IPX7 under IEC standard 60529. The leather bands are not water resistant.
Is it even going to be possible to un-tether it from the iphone at a reasonable price range anytime soon? Going by these launch numbers, I say no...

Not sure why you think this. Both Android Wear and Pebble have plenty of apps. There are equivalents to just about everything they showed during this conference. The biggest advantages AppleWatch have functionality wise is the speaker, and NFC which the Sony SW3 already has.
You will need to explain that one.
Hilarious to see so many people focused on the Edition pricing. Of course that was going to happen. Will be fun to see how it all plays out come launch time.
Even at the bottom end, it's overpriced...

Because the list of apps available already today is impressive, and will only continue to get better. The Apple ecosystem draws developers more quickly, and it appears that'll be the case with the Watch too. I'm not saying Android Wear in particular won't have a robust app store to choose from, but don't be surprised when Apple Watch blows by the competition in this regard.
The same can be said about accessories too. I'm already seeing press releases show up in my inbox with third part bands for the Apple Watch. Don't like the price of the bands Apple is offering, don't worry, there will be plenty of others. This is just another area that Apple tends to have a leg-up on the competition.
