Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

I am happy they delayed the game. It's still a little bit rough around the edges and it would have to go gold this week (probably) for the early april release. The only mistake they made is delaying it again and again. If they had said back in November that it's delayed to mid May there would be no outrage.

We were told we would be able to receive a copy of the game on the platform of our choice. I, as a full member, wanted to select the game on Xbox One. There has already been a lot of confusion regarding the limited edition copy the game, but this is getting ridiculous now.

People are claiming that backers will receive a portion of the games profits, but I do not recall seeing this anywhere in the 40 months I have been part of this development. Can someone shed some light on this for me? I am considering claiming a refund to put towards my Xbox One copy of the game.

When I signed up, there was a talk about you actually buying a share of the possible profits instead of just crowdfunding. This share-system was also one of the reasons they shut down further backing because IIRC the British authorities were not happy. They used to have on WMDportal the amount of returns one would get from being a certain tiermember. Unfortunately I have not seen the chart for a long time, so I need someone else to elaborate on the actual returns.

From what I can read on the forums there will be some return as a full member. After some consideration regardless I think I'll leave my money with SMS. They could have handled things a lot better, but in all fairness I have been playing their game for the past three years and I do wish them the best of luck when the game officially releases.

There's spreadsheets directly from SMS available on the forums to calculate how much you will get back depending on how much you invested and how many copies of the game are sold.

The game needs more than polish, there are somethings that flat out aren't working correctly at the moment.

Like what?

This is weird... from what I can tell, I backed at the 25 Euro level, but if I choose to get a refund, it will be of 45 Euro. Not as a form of protest but as an indication of how little I play my PC these days, maybe the wisest option will be to get a refund.

Do you mind pointing me in the right direction? I'm not regularly active on the forums so I will have missed this at some point, along with the notification to add our real names into the game as opponents :/

The game is in no way "half arsed" right now but the extra month of polish won't hurt.

Trust me i know, i'm a 'team member' since testing began. I just used 'Half Arsed' as an expression.
I for one am looking forward to release and glad they delayed it to iron out the niggles.

Examples might be useful..?

Problems with AI when it comes to pitting I've noticed, cars starting from the run off, falling through the track on certain tracks and wonky physics on unpopular cars. Stuff which makes me nervous about the release, so much so I've also applied for a refund too.

better to delay than release a half arsed game.

majority have moaned about BF4 and Driveclub being released when half finished, their reputation was then questioned,
I agree. I've never had a problem with the (inevitable) Gran Turismo delays either. Get your game right, then release it - not the other way around.

Interesting to hear. Thanks. Sounds like the delay was sensible, and inevitable. I wonder if an extra month will be enough though?

If this happens on the PC version (that is being tested daily by the members), I can only imagine how the console versions are at the moment.

Also the vague "mid-May" launch date doesn't make me very confident that will actually be the final release date. At this point they would be wiser just to say it's a Q2 release date and give them room to move the launch date once again. If they have to delay it again the reaction will be at least 10x worse than it was now (which was odd to be honest).

They also need to be worried about the likely launch of F1 2015 on late May/early June. It's not the same exact market (F1 doesn't intend to be a full sim) but there is clearly overlap of potential customers that are eager to get a racing game.

I haven't seen a car falling through the track in like... I don't know... a year?

The game needs to fix some problems, specially in MP, but saying it's half done or anything in that line is simply untrue.

I am glad myself with the change, since I'm pushing hard to have my clan ready for launch and this extra time will help us in a big way. I'm sorry for those that are anticipating the game, but I always have prefered having a polished experience day 1, than being disappointed at things not working properly. That said, the game will need patching after release, like every other game.

So how do you get our money/game? As I'm a full member from probably 3+yrs ago but haven't played it for 2yrs as I want this on PS4 not my PC?

I have other games to play, release it when it's done. It sucks for us, that we have to wait, but it's for the best in the long run. There are far too many broken games on release these days.

It's all explained on their forum. If you have your PayPal email entered in your Forum User CP then you'll get your money. They're only giving out Steam copies now I think, so you'll have to use the money they give you from sales to get the PS4 version I guess...

Spa, Sonoma Raceway, Brno and Willow Springs confirmed.

I'm fine with them delaying it until they get it right, because they only got one shot with the console versions. Poor reviews and bad first impressions will kill any chances for it to sell well.

This game isn't going to review well (and thankfully their influence on the actual buying market is decreasing every day):

1) A racing sim (hopefully also on consoles....);
2) No carrots on a stick to keep reviewers engaged;
3) No Pokemon style car unlock;

I can't remember the last time the mainstream review sites hired someone to review games that aren't the traditional games and that they don't have the know-how to do an actual review. There will not be VVV Gamer, InsideSimRacing, SimPit kind of in depth review for Project CARS coming from the traditional review sites.

This game will be reviewed by those already on staff (Eurogamer Martin Robinson is the only person on mainstream that shows knowledge of racing games) so we will end with IGN's F1 2012 review that read like Codemasters press release or IGN's Football Manager review that complained about not having actual gameplay and giving it a 2/10.

"Despite the content available from the start, that decision also denies the sense of progression making the game feel stale after the first couple of hours. No defined career mode makes the game feel unfocused and gives the player no reason to keep playing it. You could keep driving the same track on the same cars, but for what reason? There are no story, no cutscenes or character development here to be found, just a shallow racing game that tries too hard to be real with their physics but at the cost of the always important real human feelings."

I agree. What will help the game on PS4 is the complete lack of good sim racing games on the console. There's definitly a market for that there and Polyphony probably won'T release GT7 for another 3-4 years lol.

On XB1 it's a bit more tricky since they have Forza and 6 is coming out this fall.

Personally, as much as I love Forza, pCARS is in a whole different league but the "normal" customer won't necessarly see that difference.

Read **My Post** post from the other thread, then proceed to read all the shit I got for suggesting the game could never come out and is approaching DNF territory. I stand by my words...

I don't think it will ever approach DNF territory, that was a diffrent issue entirely with them restarting the project multiple times. This seems like it's down to the typical piss-poor british project management.

I was under the impression that originally it was only the PC version you would get anyway. Then SM said no free copy for backers under a certain amount but this was met with lots of pitchforks and gnashing of teeth so they went back to the original plan of a free copy.

I honestly do not remember them offering a console copy and quite frankly, I'd be surprised if they did since the publisher has to give Sony/MS a percentage per copy for licensing reasons.

Only a full member (€45) and above would receive a free copy of the game and every tier below that would receive a discount towards the game. The original plan was to offer this against the game on the platform of your choice. That's why so many backers are pissed about it, especially the ones that backed it for the Wii U version.

Deservedly so, because it's nonsense.

Exactly. I keep seeing announced in 2011 in a lot of these type of posts but I think people are missing the fact that the 2011 thing was when they started development and were looking for funding, not a traditional announcement/marketing start.

Anyway on the game, i'm glad of the delay because for me playing with a controller is still feeling very wrong (caveat though I haven't been able to play for a few weeks and I now there have been some changes to that aspect in that time).

Bloodworth on gametrailers.com is the only reviewer I trust with racing games, but I agree with your point in general. There's only 2 people max on the main sites that reviews racing games to a tangible level.

Luke Reilly from IGN is also worth a mention, I think he's the only person at that place that has some sort of understanding of racing games.

Lets be honest: that's completely dead in the water. If it does come out it won't be with the PC/Xbone/PS4 version.

Well they already confirmed that it will come out later than the other skus... That's been known for months.

The better question is more why the hell is the WiiU version still exists now that all the old old gen stuff has been canned. It doesn't make any sense salewise or marketingwise. That will be the sku that sell the less by FAR.

I think it's clear that they have a contract with Nintendo that they can't get out of which is forcing them to release it.

Since they got Bandai Namco as a publisher everything seems to have gone to hell.

And I'm quite sure the Wii U version will never see the light of day again.

God, that reads like Eurogamer's Driveclub review:
It's baffling that the studio that produced MotorStorm, which did the automotive festival thing long before Forza Horizon hit the scene, could create something so devoid of soul.

Is the plan to officially licence all of the copycat circuits (if they haven't already)?

Wasn't Spa called 'Belgian Forest' or something before?

What about official liveries, sponsors, hoardings, product placement etc?

I hope so. Adds a lot to the authenticity, methinks.
Yeah, the plan is to license all the tracks and apart from Suzuka they should all be licensed by release. It could be one reason for the delay, but probably not.

Yes if they have the license then it'S the full deal. All the circuits had temporary names during developpement before they got the license. That's just normal procedure.

The only exception is Suzuka which they couldn't get the license. So they kept the placeholder name (Sakitto) and changed the track enough so that it doesn't conflict with the license. The result is a circuit that is just close enough for fans of Suzuka to recognize it but different enough to feel different. I gotta say, I think that I actually prefer Sakitto over Suzuka now haha. The fake version is so fucking fast!

Yeah, there's also a couple of tracks that have been pushed back to DLC because they couldn't get all the licensing deals in place before release.

As many as is possible basically. From what i understand a lot of the hoardings stuff is tied into the licensing so i would expect 'real' tracks to have pretty real hoardings etc.

Second race of our Ginetta G40 Jr. preseason. This time at Sakitto International (fictional track based vaguely on Suzuka).

That looks pretty cool. I recognize all the trackside detail and virtual every portion of the track from suzuka (forwards and backwards) but its remixed into a totally new configuration. Are there more ribbons with the rest of the missing portions of the actual track shuffled in?
