Nintendo Going Mobile: Smartphone Game Deal with DeNA [First Games Fall 2015]

Wow this is big and unexpected, but it really is a good move for them... Partnering up with someone in the mobile space to leverage IPs is a great way to get started and build confidence.

I thought this part was interesting:

Nintendo and DeNA will also develop a cross-platform service that runs across smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Nintendo's own devices

Which I interpret to mean we're going to see some original and and legacy Nintendo IPs on non-Nintendo hardware, very interesting. I think this is a great move for Nintendo, wet the consumers appetite for Nintendo software on mobile platforms and give them the full course on Nintendo hardware.

This is a great thing! Best case scenario they'll actually end up with: 1) a proper account system, 2) some sort of subscription system for playing Nintendo IP spin-offs on tablets and smartphones or 3) Nintendo IP games and apps on phones/tablets/pc, and 4) a proper accessible e-shop on browsers and app.

There's a lot of money to be made in this market with the kind of mega franchises Nintendo is sitting on.

This is how I feel about this news. I just can't get behind touch screen gaming.

Companies to develop new game apps featuring Nintendo IP for smart devices and a new multi-device membership service

TOKYO, JAPAN - March 17, 2015 - Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7974) and DeNA Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 2432) today entered into a business and capital alliance to develop and operate new game apps for smart devices and build a new multi-device membership service for consumers worldwide.

Leveraging the strength of Nintendo's intellectual property (IP) and game development skills in combination with DeNA's world-class expertise in mobile games, both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo's IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices. The alliance is intended to complement Nintendo's dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo's reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide. Under the alliance, DeNA will also be able to strengthen its gaming business at a global scale by leveraging Nintendo's IP. To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.

In order to create completely new game experiences for smart devices, all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance. As these consumers enjoy the unique kind of gameplay found only with Nintendo, they will have the opportunity to explore even more premium experiences on Nintendo's dedicated video game platforms. Information on upcoming games and availability will be forthcoming.

Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.

As part of the long-term relationship and commitment by each company, Nintendo and DeNA have also agreed to form a capital alliance. Under the capital alliance, Nintendo will acquire 15,081,000 of DeNA's treasury shares, which corresponds to 10.00 percent of its total outstanding stock, for a total of approximately 22 billion yen. DeNA will simultaneously acquire 1,759,400 of Nintendo's treasury shares, which corresponds to 1.24 percent of its outstanding stock, for a total of approximately 22 billion yen. The payment is due April 2, 2015.

New console next year.

I knew it.

Thank goodness too. Hopefully this time we will see a real nice hardware system from Nintendo. It doesn't have to be more powerful than PS4 but that console/handheld hybrid would be a great idea.

It seems like a win-win situation to me. Proper account system and internet services for Nintendo NX, Nintendo IPs for DeNA. *shrug*

I am going totally crazy right now, I don't kow what to think of it.

On one side I hope those games sell (and they will, and how they will), on the other side I really hope that doesn't mean the end of Nintendo's dedicated gaming handheld branch.

Now if they announced a Nintendo Phone, that'd be actually kinda relieving...

Oh hey, that smug opinion. You fucking bastards. Maybe I shouldn't Gaf while suicidal but people like you make me sick.

If reading these posts is causing you such pain, yeah, you should log off.

At the end of the day it's just videogames and that is how people here will be treating it.

Time for Nintendo to bring the "premium products, premium prices" concept to mobile. Bring it on, 39.90 dollars mobile games.

They should get working on a mobile version of Pokemon. A full game, just on your phone. I'd love that.

ah ah.

AH AH AH.

AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH BRBFRRLBLRFBR.

Yeah. You mean 5 dollars per pokeball and only one attempt at over leveled arenas to get a badge per day and 10 dollars to get another shot ....

Seems like a wise decision for both companies.

No big fan of mobile games tho. So I will probably not care much on the outputs on this platform.

Ever heard of DraStic?
Nintendo DS Emulator for phones. Buy the pokemon games, play them on your phones.

It's a good thing, isn't it? Like it or not, it's where the money flows and if this is what it takes to survive, I wouldn't pin any blame to Nintendo of going this route.

Ok completely new dedicated mobile games with Nintendo characters.

Whew no sacrificed control schemes for console games on mobile. Dodged a bullet there.

As long as they're building games from the ground up for mobile and getting outside help, I see no issues with this news. If anyone is going to rock the mobile market, it's nintendo.

“Nintendo can’t make free to play mobile games. They’d never nickel & dime us like that!” - he said, while staring at his amiibo collection

Well, for stupid minigames like Pokemon Shuffle or things like that it makes sense, but they are going to compete with their own handheld, unless they are going to abandon doing portable hardware.

As long as their home console output is the same, let them earn money in the mobile devices.
