BLOODBORNE Spoiler Thread (read OP)

Is this a game that you will be able to play and complete without looking for help on messageboards, walkthroughs? I'm intrigued by Bloodbourne, I never played the Soul games but from what I heard they were almost unplayable without looking up guides and I'm not interested in such an experience.

Completely false.

Okay, thanks guys :). Guess I'll be buying it then.

Edit: my colleague who talked to me about the souls games must suck at gaming then.

He's not wrong about some stuff though. Statistical categories can be incredibly obtuse and the game does nothing to help you understand what each one does (the Souls games, no idea about BB). But it wouldn't stop you from playing the game to the end.

These guys all stay in the same area. Cant beat boss so they must figure if they level up enough they will get strong enough to beat it. Not how these games work. You just keep fighting the boss until you win.

I don't think it's as much about sucking than it is about not having patience and/or not paying attention to the in-game dialogue. It can definitely take longer without looking up on the internet.

Souls game do not need a guide but for those who come in thinking there will be a blinking marker or arrow on the screen at all times are going to be upset. There will be doors that you come to that are locked with no explanation, paths round to enemies way over your level, etc so someone not used to "thinking" might be like, "This sucks! I need a guide!" Well, no, you just need to go explore somewhere else, maybe make some notes for yourself, or go back and talk to NPC.

The entire game can be played blind, hell, KayPlays did all 3 Souls games totally blind and she knew nothing about them going in and ended up beating each game and also figuring out all the lore. That is a Souls experience, getting lost in the world, fighting your way to and fro until you finally figure out what you need to do.

EDIT: ONE WEEK. AAARRGGHGHGHG

Are there any unboxings of the collector's edition? Already got digital copy of the game but Trying to decide if I should get it just to put it on my shelf O.o Although if I don't open it why do I need an unboxing. lol

Well, you have to be patient and it could be, that you won't know where to go, but you can find out with some effort.

I bet you will get stuck at some point.
And maybe you have to study some item descriptions to find out where the door to some key is you found some time ago.

But like said before, you can find that out all by yourself.
But the game won't tell you where to go.
Even possible that you end in a dead end, and have to go back and try an other area.
Or that you will miss an entrance and then wonder where to go

If you really want to support the game (entirely your call) Getting the collectors edition is a cool way to do so on top of already purchasing the digital version.

Honestly I absolutely love FROM and I triple dipped this time. Digital/Limited for me and a regular edition for my friend who was on the fence. This game will be fine in the long run but sales man, gotta pad those numbers.

Any one who says that the weapon upgrade system in Dark Souls can be understood / mastered without a guide or the help of the internet is full of shit tho' :)

For Dark Souls, I just went off of shit I read in various forums. I feel like this is most keeping in the spirit of the game, where you get these schoolyard-esque conversations about strategies and secrets.

An official guide, or even a complete one, ruins that aspect a bit. But getting tips through rumors and hearsay are fine in my book.

If all you want to do is complete the game then you certainly don't need online guides or outside help (though it probably wouldn't hurt to look up a strat if you're hopelessly stuck against a boss).
If you care about trophies and want the platinum then you'll mostly likely do need to consult guides to check the requirements for the 'collect all crap' -type of trophies.

  1. Take weapon to blacksmith
  2. See what materials are needed to upgrade that weapon
  3. Buy materials from blacksmith if you need to
I can't imagine what else a guide would say about upgrading weapons.

Just pre-ordered. Don't even own a PS4 yet lol.

BTW, dat collector's edition? What a joke. $20 for a nicer box (lol,) one of those incredibly lame little art books, and a digital soundtrack. SMH not even trying. Those little art books are the worst. Here's all this great stuff to look at, only it's like 1/4 of the original size and in an awkward midget landscape format that doesn't even sit right on the shelf.

For someone who has never played a souls game, how is the death punishment? If i die in a boss fight or something like that, do i have to play an entire level again or do i start close to where i died?

You start where your last checkpoint was. Your xp that you haven't spend drops at the last place you died( since it's always carried with you) so if you die on your way to retrieve it you lose that xp.

I like steelbooks and hardcover art books more than a terribly made acrylic statue, personally.

You start from wherever the last lantern (checkpoint) is. Going by the Souls games, sometimes they're close to the boss, most of the time they're not so close. All enemies respawn when you die.

Also, you lose all the blood (currency used for everything in the game... leveling up, buying items, etc) you've collected, and that blood either becomes a bloodstain on the ground or a nearby enemy will take it. If you make it back to the bloodstain and/or defeat the enemy that took it without dying, you get it back. If you die a second time without reaching your blood, you lose it permanently.

No statue that you have to hide away out of embarrassment unfortunately.

I'm just saying. I always buy the Blizzard CEs because that art book is legit. Big, beautiful pictures. The art books that come with steelcase CEs make me mad. Like I'm more annoyed than anything that I need to put this tiny children's book on my shelf. Dead Space, Devil May Cry, Gears, all have annoying garbage art manuals clogging up my bookshelf. Never again.

A huge part of the game is opening up short-cuts and new routes between zones. Typically you want to find the most efficient way to reach a boss before you seriously set about trying to kill it.

I have the Collectors on preorder, mainly for the OST. Is the Collectors walkthrough going to contain more artwork? I'm tempted to pick it up if so.

As said above, you'll open up shortcuts as you go that will make getting back to boss fights easy.

The punishment from death comes in the form of losing all of your currency that is both used as money and as to level up your stats. You can get it back by going back to where you died and -in this game's case - killing what killed you.

Completely false.

I disagree with the 'completely' statement. I definitely got stuck on ambiguous notions, I have definitely not known where to go, and have definitely 'played it wrong' on many occasions because I wasn't aware of smiths, how to upgrade weapons, what to do when you kill an NPC, what to do when NPC's appear and how to do their quests, etc, or how to kill certain bosses.

You can definitely complete the game blind, but even more than that, you will ask for tips and help.

But that's all a part of the charm I suppose.

Of course you don't know how to do those things. Why should you? But not knowing those things does not translate to "almost impossible to beat without a guide." Instead of using a guide you can explore, experiment, talk to NPCs, read item descriptions, etc. You can also summon help if you're really at the end of your rope.

To add on to the other replies, you can also, occasionally, run past all the trash mobs to get back to your bloodstain. Not sure if this holds true to bloodborne, but in previous games, no mobs will follow you once you've gone through the fog to fight a boss.

There is, however, a slight animation delay while walking through the fog which can get interrupted if you get hit (e.g. by the train of mobs that's following you.)

The safest way to approach a boss fight, imo, is to first put down your summon sign to help others fight the boss. There is no penalty for dying while helping someone else, and you get to learn the mechanics before you try to fight the boss yourself. You can also summon others to help you with the boss fight if you need it.

I think this is the same in Bloodborne, but not much is known about the online capabilities right now. I'd imagine it's very similar.

Idk, that invisible walkway crystal bullshit was bullshit. I didn't need a guide for anything else. Side quests are also ambiguous as hell as well, like just talking to Onion bro being the way to continue his questline.

You could easily see where flakes of crystal shards were dropping along the walkways though.

Having decision crisis right now. I have Nightmare Edition preordered, but I have £70 for trade ins on a card and money is tight right now and just saw that Game is selling the Strategy Guide for £20. I could pick up the standard version of the game as well as the strategy guide for next to zero cost. Should I do that? Only problem is I love collector's stuff. :[

edit: Also anyone in the UK know if any Game stores have midnight launches planned at all?
