OVA ver. was better but this one was still GOOD

will watch it tonight but how's the verdict? Did David surpass the OVA's version?

Not even a little bit.

As with last week, Banjou Ginga really put on a superb performance as D'Arby but the visuals were not quite up to scratch. It was a solid episode and a fitting rendition of this arc for TV.

David can't get round the Jotaro censoring.

As I understand it, it is illegal to show minors smoking on Japanese TV.

No, it's not you can find it on plenty of other shows. In the same season that the first series of Stardust Crusaders was airing Ping Pong had kids smoking with no censorship.

I'm not entirely sure why/how it's censored in JoJo's and why that same rule doesn't apply elsewhere. I assume it's related to the broadcast network.

Well, that was underwhelming. I should stop reading anything JoJo related, manga readers said this was even better than the
battle with Wammu
in Battle Tendency.

I liked this better than the OVA adaptation mainly because of the art style but I understand if someone prefered the OVA.

The censorship was incredibly stupid also.

Why not watch the OVA ver., this remains the best 'fight' I've read in a manga in years.

music was very annoying and completely ruined any tension, and the fake out moments from SP were horribly done apart from the cigarette lighting.

OVA was too rushed, and your complaint about the music is stupid. I thought it was awesome. The only thing that was a bummer was the censoring, otherwise this completely destroys the OVA, which was pretty rushed.

OVA may have been rushed, but it still ahd better animation than this episode. And music DID rob the scene out of it's tension, if you watch the ova and this episodes back to back that is very clear.

David Pro's adaptation has been really goo, but if there were episodes were the OVa were gonna be better it was D'arby Senior and DIO.

I didn't think it would beat the OVA this time and I was right but man they did a great job anyway. I really liked the part where it got all sketchy.

Censoring was terrible though, probably caused someone or everyone at DP to cry.

now that was stupid. during the Boingo Oingo episode they were smoking without censorship, I'm assuming it was because they were not considered minors whereas Jotaro is supposed to be one?
I'm sure that anyone watching this can clearly tell that Jotaro is a 16 y old kid.

whatever, the episode was still good.

Huge improvement over last week. The writer seemed to instantly realize his mistakes and fix it mid battle which was wonderful. Loved how confident Jotaru became when he realized he had his friends by his sides, even willing to put Kakyoin (he even wrote friend even), soul on the line. Unforgettable episode even if the dumb smoking censor was there (why not just have him not smoke?!)

D'arbys R part was the second best part, rewatched it at least five times.

Why are you always calling him Jotaru?

I agree that the music was a bit distracting. I felt more hype than I did tension but I guess that's because I already knew the outcome. It was still as stylish as ever though. I love Jotaro's composure.

Hm, I didn't like this episode as much as the previous one. The direction it was going was way too obvious; it was plain as day that Jotaro was bluffing the whole time and that D'arby would fold under the pressure, and that took the tension our of it for me, as a viewer. I did like the twist that everyone in the vicinity was on D'arby's side, at least. It was cool how this was a battle, like the previous one, that Jotaro won not through the power of his stand, but because of who he is.

See, in the OVA they made the Star Platinum shanenigans more obvious, which put some actual pressure on D'Arby trying to figure out if he was bluffing or if he switched the cards using his stand's speed. This episode just doesnt give you that feel.

And how the hell is Emperor+ Toth 2 episodes

It seems that many people are saying that the OVA had the superior version of this episode, so I'll have to check that out.

The OVA version of this fight is probably one of the GOAT mindgame battles.

The OVA really exceeds in certain areas and is worth a watch
despite how ugly and drab it looks
but David Production's TV series is better imo, it's spread evenly and does everything good, I wouldn't say it has any glaring weak points in comparison to TV series beyond the animation or lack thereof in Part 1/2.

But I'm a huge JoJo fan so take it with a grain of salt.

The OVA version is superior. But most of the OVAs are pretty crappy.
The end of this fight was one of the only high points.

I dunno, most of the 90's OVA is pretty great.

Extending the Geb fight? Sweet.

The D'Arby fight? Super Sweet.

The final Fight? Crazy Awesome.

I still have to watch vs Barbie Part 2, but having watched the OVA a long time ago I remember it being one of the most tense and amazing shonen fights I've ever watched. He truly was one of the most formidable opponents Jotaro's team had to face in spite of (actually thanks to) having a stand that had nothing to do with combat.

I also ended up watching Kaiji after someone recommended it, but having watched the first arc I can say I'm not really feeling it. I thought he'd have to challenge several kinds of games over a few episodes, but the focus on a single kind of game over a whole arc didn't make it as interesting to me as D'Arby's rapid-fire bets over
seemingly
random stuff.

The 90's OVAs (later from episode 8 to 13) are godlike, especially the final fight with Dio,I actually prefer it to the manga version too. The first 7 episodes that came much later are kinda bad and mix a lot of stuff/

Good episode, but the OVA version was so much better. This one was still good however, but doesn't have anything on the OVA. plus, that censorship kills it, IMO.

If you're going to have that much censorship, you might as well not have it at all. It's ridiculous to be missing half of your face for that long of a time.

Kaiji is awesome. Especially the last arc of the first season.

I don't know why they bother with censoring, the dialogue is still explicit and the inexplicable shadow isn't even blocking it out. Just dumb letter of the law bullshit.

The card betting in Kaiji had tons of turns though, even if it was technically one game. Some of it is bullshit with new rules mid way through but even still, the way the scope zooms in and out from individual matches to influencing the meta was interesting.

That said, the first arc is the best in terms of the game they play so you've seen the peak.

It was much better in the OVA. The juice/cig scenes were underwhelming here. The tension was a lot less here than in the OVA.

*watches OVA version after everyone is talking about it*

...........Man, I don't know if it's because I've only seen the new version & didn't grow up watching the OVAs, but I'll take the David Production version. Voice acting (sub) was alright for the most part (I wasn't a fan of D'arby sounding like Foghorn Leghorn at times in the dub), but it felt like it was going a bit too fast, which kind of takes away from the tension building. Plus obvious difference in the times (1993 vs. 2014/2015) & one being an OVA, but the presentation kind of felt...lacking. It didn't "feel" very Jojo-ish.

Though the over-the-top presentation is one of my favorite parts of Jojo & the David Production adaptations, so maybe that's why I prefer this over the OVA.

LOL at Jotaro betting Kakyoin's and his mom's soul. Awesome. By the end I did figure he had crappy cards, but was just intimidating D'arby. Kinda glad there wasn't some kind of asspull. Besides the juice of course :P

No one really "grew up" with the OVAs though, really. They were just there most people just read the manga.
