When a dubbing company is told they can do whatever they want by the Japanese company

Yeah I had characters in Rahxephon, Angelic Layer, and Spell Wars.

My last dub was back when I was 13 years old for Angelic Layer. They had me play a ~18 year old guy and my vocal chords hadn't dropped yet so I lowered my voice as low as my prepubescent suprano could go, and you could tell it was a kid trying his hardest to lower his voice. It was horrible, I knew it was horrible, and that was the last work I ever did for ADV :(

Wait, was that a one-off competitor or something?

I played Ringo in that one.

(I also hate the Ghost Stories dub)

Lol I did voice over work for ADV when I was a kid. We had to follow the script, but in crowd scenes we could say whatever we wanted. ADV and many other dub companies have been struggling lately due to crunchyroll and the overall demand for subtitles w/Japanese voice actors

Not surprising. Some of this stuff is funny (I happen to enjoy the Shin-chan dub) but I can easily see why people would get pissed off or move in the direction towards subtitles via Crunchyroll. When you are paying for or even tuning in (be it legit or otherwise) for what you expect to be a honest localization/translation and you get some of these stuff on top of what would be horrible voice acting/direction in most shows no wonder it drives people away from dubbing. Let's be honest here even if you can't understand the Japanese to know how it sounds there there are plenty of animated shows in English for example that one can look to for voice acting done well and can make the comparison.

That was always my problem with dubbing. If the story was altered for whatever reason I didn't care because I didn't know. Localizing something means you'd have do change things. I loved Robotech as a kid so altering stuff is something I can't really complain about personally. However as a kid I could watch something like Batman the Animated Series, any Disney show or movie, etc and hear how the voice acting was done, sound editing, etc and then watch some dubbed anime shows and just hear the difference as soon as the episode began. That stuff I don't accept or forgive.

"I missed hearing his voice...

Rabbit: Heh hueh hueh hueh

...his strange requests...

Rabbit: Touch me.

...and his reprimands...

Rabbit: Touch me HARDER."

Wow. These guys must have had a LOT of fun when they recorded this.

Geez, they really didn't give a fuck, did they. Are dubs like these even being made anymore nowadays? I can think of Space Dandy or Panty & Stocking which take creative liberties, but they're also faithful to the original versions. It'd be impressive to see a dub just go against everything of the original anime in this day and age.

They literally gave no fucks.

Oh, is that an ongoing series? I thought it was a decade old or something. That's pretty cool, then.

Adult Swim aired it a few years back and I knew even then despite never knowing about Shin Chan they were going off the beaten path in the dub. I didn't mind since I was cracking up.

Nah this was rare. Its a shit show, they didn't care. Like many licenses for shows at the time, the companies were forced to pick up several shows in order to get a particular show they wanted. So lot of anime companies got stuck with garbage shows they were forced into buying. Ghost Stories wasn't going to sell, so they did this crazy dub, and it probably did get more coverage than the show done leg it would have.

Process of elimination tells me that perfectchaos007 voiced Tomo in Episode 19.
The fact that I submitted both the cast lists for RahXephon and Angelic Layer back into the CrystalAcids database over a decade ago made that relatively easy to deduce.

Incidentally, I'm a big fan of your Ringo. Of course, I've said as much to you before. I need to scope out some of your recent work in Last Exile and Railgun sometime.

That's a good explanation. I guess business isn't done that way in the industry anymore or, if it is, they wouldn't ever do a dub like this to attempt to cut costs.

This is like if Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged was somehow the official dub

Yet, it manages to be even more offensive. It's pretty amazing.

Man. Something like this would be really cool and this does have funny lines like "FILL THE HOLE, HOLE FILLER!" but the 2004 edgy XDDD racism and misogyny and homophobia and shit ain't funny at all.

I would like to see more dubs be allowed to just do whatever the fuck they want like this though. Just with a bit of taste so it can have the funny bits without the Typical Internet Humor Ha Ha I Said Fag bits.

yeah i fucking love the dub, watch from time to time when im feeling down.

the way they pick on the little brother kills me, poor thing, the religious nut girl is jokes too

I watched this last year. It was very good and funny....up until the two thirds mark of the series. Then they just took things way too far and it just got stupid.

IIRC this was pretty much an abridged series before those became popular on youtube. In the past there have been other anime with funny dubs, one of my favorites was Shinesmen which was pretty much a sentai/Power Rangers parody who was kinda loose with the dub's translations. But Ghost Stories took everything to a whole new level and completely rewrote the original script cus it was mediocre and was probably only licensed as part of some package deal with some more popular show.

I think the recent Kill la Kill dub was pretty good at inserting english humor.

Unfortunately, the catch is the worse epic battle cries. I don't know if any dub has done epic battle cries well outside of DBZ.

They only dubbed 78 episodes of Shin Chan. I've been rewatching them on funimation's site and it has been a lot of fun reliving the Bush era humor.

I watched all three parts. I've not laughed like this in a long time. This is absolute gold.
