My two major problems with the game:

- the loading times, obviously (but that has been discussed to death)
- the fact that your blood vials don't get refilled at the bonfire-lantern thing/after death

Especially that last thing is getting really f***ing tedious and is spoiling my enjoyment of the game. I just died JUST before finishing a boss off, and had used up all of my blood vials. I've respawned now, with ZERO vials in my inventory. Zero. I have to buy some at the merchant in the Dream Area, but, oh wait, I have no blood left since I died. So, basically, every time you die, you have to grind blood to be able to buy your estu- ehr, blood vials to be able to continue the game normally.

(The irritation is exacerbated by the extra loading times of having to go back to the Dream World to buy the damn things as well.)

This is not adding difficulty; this is adding mindless grinding. Frustrating and, most importantly, not fun.

Great game otherwise, but this is making trying bosses somewhat depressing. The fear is not in not knowing how to tackle these behemoths, but in knowing that dying will mean boring grinding again. Blergh.

I did not expect all 20 of my blood vials to be refilled every time I die, but 10 would be nice (read: better and more fair game design). Or just 5, for f***'s sake.

P.S. Sometimes I DO regain a handful of vials upon death, which is weird. Does anyone know the logic behind this?

AFAIK every time you get more than 20 vials it gets in your storage

and when you die it gets refilled automatically

Forgot all about my collectors edition pre-order on amazon. Damn near killed my bank lol. Looks to be well on its way. Sorry to see gaffers are having trouble with theirs.

That second issue sounds like the same stuff with grass in Demon's Souls. I'm okay with this.

So how is this for people who didn't get into the Souls games due to difficulty? Review scores have piqued my interests.

I'm in the same boat as you and I'm leaning towards passing.

It's a shame too because it sounds like a great game, but the last thing I want to do after a hard day of work is devote a ton of time trying to get past one section of a game.

I might play my brothers copy first and see how I like it...

Ugh. Application Data not downloading fast enough. The launch icon and update data is all installed, but doubt the game will not be done to maybe 1 ish for me =/

I am excited to see so many reviewers praise the interconnectivity of the game world and level design. The story seems to have struck a chord a bit more in this FromSoft game than the souls games with a lot of the press.

Time cannot pass quickly enough right now...

Did the first boss drop anything useful? Atheon just gave me an ugly ship the first time I beat him.

Lulz, atheon has always been good to me in terms of drops. As for the first bloodborne boss....

the first boss (cleric beast) drops a badge which allows you to then purchase kirkhammer and revolving pistol from the hunters dream messengers, you also receive 4000 blood echoes. Some people say Father Gascoigne is the first boss, but I consider cleric beast to be first.

If you had 20 vials and kept earning more, the excess vials go straight into your stash, and you refill upon entering the hub (or touching a lantern as well?).
Stockpile health and ammo in your storage. When you die, it'll pull some from storage.

AHHH, now I get it.

Still doesn't change the grindy nature of it all, though :( Blugh.

Any tips on regaining blood vials easily/quickly?

Anyone know where/when I'm supposed to get the small resonant bell? I know some people said they got it around
Cleric Beast
, but I only got the summoning bell, not the other one :S

So how is this for people who didn't get into the Souls games due to difficulty? Review scores have piqued my interests.

I think the difficulty in the Souls game was a bit exaggerated. Sure, the game is a challenge, but not in a cheap way.

Reposting from the Bloodborne Press Preview thread. The GAFfer whose question I answered found it helpful.

I'm one of those people that never played a souls game and decided I might give Bloodborne a shot. What do you think it is that people will not expect?

What I don't like about many modern games is that they hold your hand. There's always a big arrow on the screen telling you to head this way for 300 feet or someone calling you on a radio and telling you what to do. The combat in many games was also not very difficult (mash X to win kinda easy). A lot of people play these kinds of games and enjoy them, but the Souls games are not like those games.

A big thing about the Souls games is that it doesn't hold your hand. There were always basic tutorials in the beginning of the game, but many mechanics of the game are not explained (for example, in Dark Souls, you can roll faster if your equip weight was <50% of the max equip weight, but the game never tells you this outright). There are no waypoint markers, no guy on a radio giving you directions. The Souls games required people to have a lot of patience: read every item description, read up on what every stat in the menu means, talk to NPCs multiple times for hints on where to go/lore about the game world. In Dark Souls, right from the proper beginning of the game (after the tutorial), you have a few different ways to go. Some of those paths lead to areas that you should visit later, but many people learned that the hard way. There is an NPC who will give you a hint of where you should go, but you'd need to actually talk and listen to him.

Combat in Souls games were not button mashy. You can't just mash R1 and expect to kill things easily. Much like Monster Hunter, each attack has an animation that cannot be canceled. When you press R1, you will be locked into the attack until its animation is completed. It is definitely more deliberate and slower paced than say, DMC or Revengeance. And even the first enemy you come across can fuck your shit up. You've got to respect every enemy in the game and try not to rush things. Watching an old Game Informers video Dan Ryckert play Dark Souls for the first time, he made an interesting observation; The combat in Dark Souls is like Punch Out: enemies have patterns that you'll have to learn, you can only safely attack at certain moments, a specific enemy attack/pattern/animation is a tell and you should roll in a certain direction to avoid it. Bloodborne combat being faster paced than previous Souls games doesn't mean it will play more like DMC or Revengeance. Attack animations will still be there.

And a big thing in the Souls games is death. Everyone dies all the time to enemies, and the environment. You'll lose your souls (which is your XP and currency combined). People might become very frustrated and lose patience when they hit a wall.

I can see a lot of people being interested in Bloodborne because many on GAF are super hyped for it (including me!). If you can be patient, give every enemy the respect they deserve, and pay attention to things, then you'll do fine. If not, then you might become frustrated and not have fun with the game. The Souls games are difficult, but not as difficult as you might think. Rather, they are games where you have to give your full attention.

Edit- If you've never played the Souls games and plan to not play any of them before Bloodborne, then check out a video or two on YouTube or Giant Bomb to get a feel of what Souls games are like.

Did you have to equip those rings that you could purchase from the cat or something?

Nah no work around needed. Only restriction was it was coop only, couldn't talk to invaders.

More on-topic, being in the Amazon CE limbo boat myself I'm getting incredibly anxious. Still says tomorrow and they've been known to ship things out at even 1 a.m., but I just know that if one game doesn't get here on time this year it would be my most likely GotY.

So I won't have any internet for a while, should I even bother with this game? I know Demon's Souls started the whole online ingame messages thing and also had invasions. Looks like this game expands quite a bit on that.

I feel the same way. The vials not respawning after a death which necessitates grinding is a fairly big turn off for me, wish that part would be a little more player friendly.

Still closed...Hmm...

I'm someone who rolled with a Zweihander + Grass Crest shield in DS1 and a Greatsword in DS2.

I'm scared for how bad my ass is going to get kicked in a little bit.

Is there a way to speed up ps4 downloads at all? Mine seems to have gotten like halfway done and now it's just stuck. I've tried pausing/resuming and going into rest mode. Haven't tried a restart yet though.

The storage/grind thing will be a non-issue as you get more skilled. You will be stockpiling vials all day long as you use them less to kill normal mobs.

Not much help on first run through, but still..heh.

Quick question kids, i got BB of the PSN, and it says i must manually download the DLC, but i can't find it. can anyone help me out. ?

Question for those that have spent a bit of time with the game:
Largely have you been telling people to head to the clinic for a safe spot or the chapel? I can't tell which person I trust least. Sent one to the chapel so far.

I tried Dark Souls and hated it. I tried Dark Souls II and hated it also. And yet here I am, considering whether or not to get Bloodborne. GAF hype is real.

Ok, I need help finding something in the second area-

I went through the password door in the cathedral and into the woods. When I first came through here, I was in an open forest full of snipers and dogs. Now I can't figure out where that is. I also found a cave that lead deep into a big room, but it looked like a boss so I turned back, and I can't find that now either. I've been running around all over the woods looking for both things... it's so bizarre I can't find either... it's almost like I dreamed being there. Anyone know where these places are?
