Free to Play Halo Online (Saber, H3 eng) announced, only for Russia [First Info]

The biggest news for me out of this is the Halo3/4 engine fully ported to PC. I just can't imagine they would do the work and just leave it on this one (likely shit) game.

Why would they release on Steam when they have Windows 10 Store right around the corner?
Well MS is cool with Steam now going by the last Win 10 event. Something tells me if they do it'll be on Steam and Windows 10 store but will require Windows 10.... Which is fine because it's free and there is no reason not too go Win 10 at this point

The work was already done when they created MCC for X1. X1 is basically x86 PC. I mean Windows 10 will be running on it by the end of the year.

Cool in the sense they want to to run your Steam games using their overlay, staying in the "Xbox" ecosystem even when playing other games. Phil Spencer was out there saying it may be possible for Steam to sell Windows 10 "Xbox" games depending on Valve but I don't take that as MS wanting to put the big guns that could drive folk to their store on a competing platform.

343 is done, I don't know how much you know about it, but HALO is a HUGE part of it. It's not like in South Korea where you can become successful by playing League of Legends. If you screw someone in America, you bring great outrage and furious anger toward yourself and the only way to get rid of that shame is reimbursement.

What this means is the American gaming public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Halo 5 for the Xbox One, nor will they purchase any of Microsoft's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Microsoft has alienated an entire market with this move.

Microsoft, publicly apologize and cancel Halo Online for PC or you can kiss your gaming division goodbye.

nice reference, i like it

I'd play this simply for the revival of the Halo 3 engine. No Halo game since has had the same beautiful lighting and dynamic sandbox that Halo 3 had.

What a weird world we live in...

Well, I look forward to playing Halo on my PC I guess.
When I'm streaming it from my Xbox to my PC here in the US. :(

I know where you are coming from, but I still think it is possible we might see a year late port of the collection and perhaps Halo 5 the following year. I mean after a year or so it isn't really moving HW anymore.

They have not done so with Halo 3 or 4, same case for Gears 2-3 and others.

It is crap like this that can really hurt a already wounded franchise. 343 is boasting Halo 5 to be balanced and competitive game play now we have this shit? A free to play Halo with armor stats. Way to split the Halo community even more with cheap knock offs. Why have 2 separate Halo games release in the same year on two platforms? I don't know what the hell 343 or MS is thinking.

True. However PC gaming is a lot bigger than it was then and Xbox is debatably less essential than it was around that time.

In the end I still think you are more likely right than wrong, but if MS were to change their ways with Win10, PC gaming on the rise and Xbox HW likely sold at a loss I wouldn't totally dismiss it as possible.

Really, this does make sense. Russia is huge into the F2P market, I mean just look at World of Tanks. This will probably be big.

I see American sanctions against Russia have now reached a critical point. If this news doesn't cause Putin to rethink his policy against Ukraine, nothing will.

I'm not saying that's what he was doing when he was "missing" last week, but he does like to dong on skrubz

This is not planned for the US, it is built for a specific market and gamer style. This couldn't have been made any more clear. Russia does not have a massive installed base of 360s or Xboxes.

So your hand-wringing is 100% unwarranted.

That said, I do get pissed when I remember I can't buy an RS6 Avant in the US. Even though I couldn't afford one even if they sold them here.

Deja-Vu-ing redundantly from Community Thread. Since that seems to be all the rage.

I'm sorry but could you provide any link confirming this claim? There is a lot of PR around Warface but that's mostly that - PR.
Public info wise - you can find some concrete numbers(like PCU, and what is their biggest revenue source) in Mail.Ru financial reports.
Game rankings overall are done by research firms - so like with NPD, if you want non-PR source on them you'd have to look for leaks or pay for it.

Why include the following line if you weren't thinking about other regions?

"Theoretically, any expansion outside of Russia would have to go through region-specific changes to address player expectations."

What does that mean? Do Russians play FPS games differently? I know F2P is more popular over there but beyond that what are the differences in gaming style? Also isn't limiting a game to one market in the age of the internet just silly from a revenue perspective?

I may be wrong but I think the Xbox One is not sold at a loss, but the profit must not be very significant. The fact that PC gaming has become stronger is actually something that would further discourage Microsoft from truly treating it as a first-class platform because that would mean too many (at least in their eyes) would be tempted to ditch the Xbox ecosystem and go PC if the Microsoft AAA games are there.

They could certainly turn Windows 10 into a very healthy stream of revenue by bolstering their Windows 10 store on which they take a cut of every software sold like Valve do with Steam, but it would require W10 to have exclusives and I'm not so certain League of Legends and Fable Legends will cut it, if they want their store to challenge Steam then they will need something bigger that's not available anywhere else.
Literally any AAA game that Microsoft publishes on the Xbox One could sell very well on PC with the proper marketing. But I don't believe Microsoft are not aware of that, but obviously they can't do that if they want more and more people investing in the Xbox ecosystem....Unless of course they are really serious about extending the said ecosystem to Windows 10 (the complete Xbox Live API is available on W10) and fostering it.

I can see Microsoft bringing some big Xbox IPs to PC but not the big games per se, like a free to play variant of Forza / Gears. I don't see them fulfilling their promises with genuine AAA first party support. Not to mention a detail : the Xbox Live is free on Windows 10 while it costs 60$/€ on Xbox, cross-play with that in mind would not be acceptable for Xbox gamers.

This is not planned for the US
Right now. Still we talked with guys from Saber and they said (quote in Russian):
Россия будет первой, но не последней страной, где будет запущена Halo Online, и речь идет даже не об СНГ или Европе.
Wich means like something 'Russia wouldn't be the last market where Halo Online will be launched. And we're talking about not even EU or CIS here'.

What next? I bet EU and China. And then US, why not?

IIRC it's about purchasing habits. Even with reduced prices, there's a pretty large segment of the Russian market that's hesitant to pay for games up front but fairly receptive to F2P monetization strategies. Catering to that demographic is a non-trivial part of what made Warface and World of Tanks successful there.
