Halo 5 Guardians: #huntthetruth

I dont know why but I get this odd feeling that Halo 5 is going to be the IGN First game for April. They mentioned on podcast unlocked that the April First will be starting this coming Monday. What better timing than right after the live action trailer the night before?

That'd be kinda insane. Anyone follow Ryan? He's terrible at keeping secrets.

No way they're handing out all that info before E3.

Though I'd love to be wrong.

I'd be surprised given the raft of titles they have announced but not really detailed if we didn't get one of them with that sort of blowout, obviously we've played MP for Halo 5 but the campaign is a huge part of it and it usually does have some sort of magazine cover blowout iirc.

i wonder who wins a fight between Locke and Chief in this game... either H2H or a Gun Fight..it will be interesting if 343 shows that, probably in a cutscene or something?

Like, say, Game Informer?

this where a kappa goes, right?

i think it will be rainbow six

Yeh... who knows what they have planned before E3

Could be plenty of things: GI, IGN First, Edge (who had Sunset Overdrive last year) or maybe just something for everyone, or nothing!

How can people pride Halo 4's storyline as dark and mature, but then go on to dismiss a villains motivations and characterisation like they're a luxuries which have no place in the narrative? It is downright atrocious storytelling, there is no two ways about it.

Halo Wars had a better story than Halo 4 and I really mean that.
Not sure I follow...
Breaking the story down to that is still an issue, as it then has no ties to the previous Halo game fiction whatsoever aside from Chief and Cortana. People that don't read the extended fiction want some Halo story, but not something super deep that you need to have read a ton to get.

Opinions and all.

Well yeah, the covanent human war ended, and it is the start of a whole new Chapter in Master Chief's life (a whole new story arc) so naturally it should be different?

And forerunners were already a part of Halo lore, they just weren't the main focus of it.

....Anyways, I still don't see how the new story was any harder to follow than HaloCE...

I mean sure if your new to Halo you won't understand a lot of things, but if you have played the previous games you will easily get the gist of things.....I think it was a story teller from Bungie(interview) that was talking about how you don't want to just spell everything out to the player, but rather get them interested enough to find out more...leave just as many questions as answers.

Gamers, in general, have become lazier over the years, sadly. Spoiled by titles that spell everything out and hold your hand and carry you through scripted events and sequences that require little to no effort on your part to read into or listen to or search for more. I like mystery. I like hidden clues. I like having to rewatch a cutscene or replay a section because theres just so much to unpack or uncover that you miss it the first time. Halo 4 walked both worlds... Exposition and Mystery... Quite well, all in all. It leaned toward Mystery over Exposition, and I think Halo 5 will be the reverse of that, but man, Halo 4 was such a solid title as far as narration and world building is concerned. Brilliant, that.

Bro... Lets be real here. I would never touch a halo product again if a random spartan 4 beat the chief in a 1 on 1 fight.

Get ready for it. 343 will probably make Chief an emotional wreck over Cortana and lose. I could also see Chief not wanting to fight Locke and trying to explain that the Didact is the real enemy and loses to Locke to prove a point.

It's incredibly stupid but this is something i see 343 doing

Chief would absolutely destroy Locke. Not only does he dwarf over him in size, but he has more experience and as a result of the more brutal methods of turning him into a Spartan, I'd assume he's much stronger.

dude was a freelance headhunter that ONI offered to make him even better, making him a Section 3 agent. he's got skills.

true, but Master Chief again is like the "chosen one" of the Halo universe... The Reclaimer..

he also is like the greatest soldier in the UNSC history etc.... but no doubt that Locke has skills

lol.... but isn't locke at least a competent soldier as well...doesn't nightfall portray him as one?
No way should a spartan 2 lose to anyone but a spartan 2. Chief will probably destroy Locke and put him in his place. is anyone excited for agent Locke? Nightfall was awful in my opinion. At least forward unto dawn has a great last 30min.

Spartan 4s in general are pumped up marines and ODSTs. Chief is a 7 foot tall brainwashed killing machine with metal bones and some other crazy ass warhammer esque modifications. Locke might even be the best of the spartan 4s... but he shouldnt hold a candle to any spartan 2.

Chief has wrecked multiple ODSTs in a fight when he was a kid.

He's gone up against the worst the Covenant had and survived.

He's faced the flood, didact, etc.

If Locke beats Chief in CQC in Halo 5, I'm just writing it off as fan fiction.

Master Chief should have no trouble defeating Locke. If 343 writes it to where Locke can hang with Chief, then the people at 343 are lost. I'm sure Locke will beat Chief and then 343 will have you hunt down a terminal that takes you out of Halo 5 just to fill you in on why Locke is now bad enough to beat a Spartan-II.

hahahaha, that and a few karen traviss terminals telling me why Halsey is space hitler.

Absolutely nothing in the canon, even the newest material (like New Blood, which goes a lot into SIV's), supports Locke being able to have a chance against Chief. I'm not really sure why this is a conversation though. There's no way in hell 343 would do it anyway. Some of you guys are overly-pessimistic to the point of inventing bizarre and impossible scenarios in which 343 makes you mad, and it's really weird to me...

I believe Locke is accompanied by 3 other Spartans so that's the only situation where I can see them having an upper hand in some way.

Chief has the reaction time to dodge rockets and the speed to kill a room of people before they can react; of course this is based on the book.

I'm not even sure if Locke and three other Spartans are capable of handling a Spartan II, let alone a Spartan II that's been fighting against unbeatable odds his entire life.

To put it into perspective, Locke is incapable of wearing John's armor because of its immense weight and power.

The story is probably going to be real predictable:

Person X sends Locke to hunt chief down, maybe to get some revenge, bump him off or something
Chief has been doing some investigating, uncovers some big deep shit
Locke finds Chief, Chief puts him in his place, perhaps gives him a little bitch slap or something, tells him what he's found and the two become allies
Locke and Chief are BFFs, conquer the enemy, beat down Person X, rule the world.

Mix in some Covenant, Prometheans maybe some Flood, maybe something else, I saved everyone $60.

Then hopefully Chief kills Locke.

Simple!

Locke was lame as all fuck in that crappy tv show they had. The personality of a thumbtack and he was about as bad ass as in the show as Jamie Kennedy was in Son of the Mask. About all he had going for him were those idiotic "We were like gods and stuff" lines that didn't make any sense, but he kept trying to flesh out. He's persistent, it made no sense the entire time, but he didn't give up.

Zero skills on display that would make anyone think he would be taking on Master Chief at any point outside of a fever dream.

Stinkles, delete that show.

I'm excited for Locke's potential. The writing let Nightfall down. If the script had been there, maybe he'd be everyone's favourite new character in the Halo universe by now. If he's handled well in 5, we should be all good. It means we get to see spartan vs spartan. A whole team of spartans 4s vs a Mark II. Now that sounds like a fun fight. There's so much potential.

Some people think Locke is all about replacing Chief or taking his mantle, whereas I'm pretty sure Locke's point of view is going to be used to make Chief even fucking cooler and legendary.

What about him makes you excited? I'm trying to but after nightfall I can't get excited. Maybe it was just a poor introduction. What did you think of nightfall?

I wouldn't take Nightfall as a scale for anything. It just had terrible writing in general and it's not really Locke's fault, that he was this terrible.

The two Halo 5 cutscenes with Locke and the Arbiter in the MCC are pretty interesting, though. I think he can make a good(maybe even great) character. Just really depends on the writing this time.

His skills won't help him in a fight against a soldier who's a veteran of the fiercest fighting in human history. Chief will most likely be injured in combat against a Forerunner construct, like the one seen in the trailer from a while ago, then Locke will find him and speak to him.

I found Nightfall to be enjoyable. I also didn't go into it with any expectations. I also waited until all the episodes were available to watch all at once, and viewed them all together.

I think what I liked most were the extra videos you can launch by following the cues. Some of them were really, really interesting and I wanted to know more! As for the main feature, it felt like a movie you'd find on SyFy, in scale, but it still felt like Halo in scope. I figured it wouldn't have a massive budget, so I wasn't expecting to be wowed by the graphics. I was expecting a brief intro for Locke, and possibly others who will show up in Halo 5 (Hi Macer!). And that's pretty much what we got. Just a primer.

Is it an award winner? No.
Was it terrible and awful and omg343sucks? No.

I enjoyed it.

Locke was just fine. I think he'll end up being a pretty great character and/or temporary foil for MC. What I'm most curious about is when we play as him... Who will be his AI? A new construct? A fragment of BB? A Cortana replicate (there are three other cloned brains of Halsey somewhere. Can't remember if ONI has found them yet or not). I think a lot of character building for Locke will come in his interaction with Arbiter, his AI and others. Why people are already saying he's a failure confuses me.

The Chief is a legend. And while Halo 4 sought to humanize him a bit, and certainly Halo 5 will continue to also, I think having multiple perspectives will bring back some of that mystery and legendary aura from previous titles. A mixed bag of the best of both approaches.

Somebody should model a markov chain of that image, where the probability of each transition is disproportional to the respective distance and iterate the probability matrix by the amount of days remaining till Halo 5 gets released to calculate the probability that Halo 5 will flop...

I don't think Spartan IV's have dedicated assigned AI's? Roland was an AI on the Infinity and it briefed every Spartan IV in Spartan Ops. Don't think he will have his own AI for some reason.

They don't, generally, but Locke looks to be using Mk. 8 Mjolnir, which (IIRC) requires an on board AI to operate.

Locke is using a new Hunter Class variant of the armor set, isn't he? And I can't imagine us stepping into the role of a new Spartan without an on board AI. But maybe he won't have one. Definitely not saying he will or will not for sure- it just seems like a logical plot point that would certainly be fun to explore and help flesh out his character more.

That being said, I also wouldn't complain about the Adventures of Locke and Arbiter lol. Plus there's the other Spartans present also, which are rumored to possibly be Buck and Macer (forget the 3rd that was rumored). There's a lot happening in Locke Land that they can draw from.

A Spartan IV in Mjolnir gen 2 armour is the equivalent of a Spartan 2 in Mjolnir armour. -http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/SPARTAN-IV_Program

This comes down the Chief vs Locke, and while Chief is a legendary soldier - he's no spring chicken any more. There is an argument for Locke winning this encounter.

I'm backing the Chief

So basically giving him plot armor

As long as the story is not something predictable like this, it should be good

Hunt chief
Capture chief
Realize chief is right
Fight side by side with chief against the greater threat
Locke dies, chief lives to see another battle

Jesus, that's crazy. I preferred it when Spartan II's were rare, almost mythical entities and Spartan III's were less powerful\expensive alternatives. It all seems a bit diluted now with loads of Spartan IV's on the go, Spartans have lost their mystique a bit for me.

I love halo. I love chief. Yet when I played through the campaigns with friends I never paid attention to the story. What would be the easiest way for me to understand what's going on?
