Halo 5 Guardians: #huntthetruth

I love halo. I love chief. Yet when I played through the campaigns with friends I never paid attention to the story. What would be the easiest way for me to understand what's going on?

This isn't an entirely comprehensive list, and it's gotten a few revisions since it was first posted, but for a quick glossover for the main story beats, this should help ya a bit. It only goes up to pre-halo 4 events. For Halo 4 and post Halo 4 stuff I'd recommend playing Halo 4 again and checking out the new novels and novellas that are to be released this year. 👍

This is actually really cool.

Wait, the Didact dies and imprints onto Bornstellar? I thought UrDidact was the original (The one you deal with in Halo 4)?

And that Iso was also still alive. Fled the Galaxy, no?

I love Halo lore. It's right up there with Tolkien in my opinion.

Ur-Didact is the original. He imprinted himself onto Bornstellar when they released him from his self-imposed imprisonment in a Cryptum. Bornstellar then slowly evolves into the IsoDidact through the course of the Forerunner trilogy.

The Librarian imprisons the UrDidact in another Cryptum before firing the Halos, hoping that it would give him plenty of time to contemplate his mistakes and so that, if ever found and released, he could help humanity take the Mantle. Instead, he merely stewed on his anger and resentment all that time.

Masterchief releases the UrDidact in Halo 4.

UrDidact is original and also the villain.

IsoDidact is the imprint, and whose whereabouts are unknown.

Agreed. 343 really fleshed out the lore to ridiculously awesome lengths thus far. They are building an entire universe of information and stories. There's just so much to explore.

.

The two Halo 5 cutscenes with Locke and the Arbiter in the MCC are pretty interesting, though. I think he can make a good(maybe even great) character. Just really depends on the writing this time.
What, where are these cutscenes? I played through all single players already.

I never got to see the ending FMV, do you have to beat it on legendary?

It's easier to watch them on YouTube. I have yet to see the end cutscene in Halo MCC. Pretty sure Frankie said, it should play after the last Halo 2 level, but it never has.

Here's a link anyways: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G2uz26smY0

Really love the voice acting. Especially Keith Davids.

Keith David is a titan of voice acting. Dude's amazing.

Locke sounds a little stiff, but nothing disastrous. Hopefully they have him emote a little more in 5.

Keith David forever <3

Locke sounds just find to me. He's a very matter of fact individual from what we've seen thus far, which I think will be part of what he traditions away from during the events of Halo 5.

I forgot about these snippets. Just watched them again - think I just jizzed in my pants.

Halo 5 Hype is building to abnormal levels now.

Not going to happen. There's an entire endgame built around the Chief being the Reclaimer/geas of the Didact that isn't anywhere close to being concluded. He'll eventually pass on, of course, but he's got a lot left in his journey.

yeah, John seems like he is "The Reclaimer"/geas like you said, but I don't know what that exactly means for him?

It has to do with the Caretakers of the Mantle. Humanity was left to take that charge, after the Forerunners forfeit their birthright to it when they rose against their creators/original Caretakers, the Precursors.

The Reclaimers are those who are to be the vessels to take that charge. Humanity is meant to take the reigns, they first must be tested, via the Flood, for their actual ability to handle the Caretaker role.

So don't be surprised when the Flood shows up again... (^_^)

(This is a very simple and summarized explanation lol. I'm at work, so I can't dive too deep atm. Maybe someone else can expand on that.

Guys, im getting worried..im worried that 343 is going to kill off the Chief...what do you guys think

They said before the launch of Halo 4 that they envisioned future for the series without Chief. It's why they also tried to push their characters really heavy, ie. Spartan Commander Palmer, and now ONI operative, Spartan Locke.

As we saw with ODST and Reach, the series can exist without Chief. But they've said this is the Reclaimer trilogy, now Saga. Maybe it does end with Chief's death. Maybe it doesn't even need to be a death, because Spartans never die, they're just missing in action.

I honestly hope he dies. Not necessarily in this game, just sometime in these games.

I was expecting him to go out by the end of this new trilogy. But now it's a saga.

Whatever they do, I hope they continue to develop him as a character, a human being. Cortana and Chief's relationship was the best part about Halo 4 and as long as they can keep up that kind of humanity they're good to go. Less genesong nonsense.

A brave move which would certainly be memorable. I'd respect a decision like that if the story is good. It would be shocking and unexpected as no-one thinks they'd do it. They could do something like have Locke beat Chief down to a point where you wonder if he's still alive. Have his arm blown off or something, so if he just pulls through you see him a few months later with like a robotic arm replacement. I'd think they'll do something like that as the story so far, and leaked live action trailer image, looks like Chief isn't going to get through being hunted down lightly.

I think they will try to make Halo into an Avengers type universe where there will be full-on Master Chief games and other games featuring individual characters.

Have we seen one good secondary character from 343i? I don't have confidence that the series can be supported by their characters.

Honestly, the entire series really can't be supported by it's characters alone. Halo doesn't have great characters, really, aside from the Arbiter in Halo 2. Some are pretty interesting like the Gravemind or even Truth, but if they really want to push Locke and Palmer to the forefront, they need to focus on their character beyond them going to point A and activating a cutscene that tells us the next plot point as previous characters. They did well with Chief and Cortana, now let's extend that to everyone else.

Laskey was cool due to FUD, and Halsey we already got intimately familar with her due to the EU novels and a bit of Reach (but even Reach had the advantage of the EU books, too).

Notable secondary characters in Halo (among others):

Arbiter
Halsey
Buck
Palmer
Lasky
Osman
Kelly
Fred
Linda
Naomi

As far as characters that could become the new main character or playable, they haven't really set anything up for that aside from Arbiter and Locke. They won't replace MC for a while.

Literally, Gaf is inventing things to get riled up about, here. Let's see what happens in Halo 5 and then discuss. 👍
