Are you sure about this? I thought it was that the original chalices are randomized at creation time, then always the same for the player thereafter, whereas the root ones always randomize when entered... I could be wrong.

Loving this game so much I am attempting the yahhar gul lamp and it's kicking my ass. I'm level 51 should I be higher or just get better because my damage is not doing so well.
Are you in an area where you beat the boss? If so, you can't use it.
This is my only complaint about the game. I was really excited earlier to go around grinding blood echoes with my friend in Central Yharnam, but that is impossible to do with the way the beckoning bell works.
[spoilers for the whole game in this post, don't read the spoiler tags if you haven't finished it]
I finished the game today! I decided to completely stay away from discussing/reading about the content of the game this time until I finished it once, so I've been staying away from this thread.
I've got so many things to talk about so this post might be a bit of mess (and I'll probably forget about half of what I wanted to talk about).
It took me 29 hours and I finished at level 71.
I told Gehrman to fuck off and proceeded to get my ass kicked a couple of times before I finally got him (figuring out how his 1hko attack worked took me a couple of tries and then he's just pretty hard to begin with)
.
I looked at the trophy list and it seemed I missed two optional areas:
the abandoned old workshop and the choir
. I also missed three bosses according to the trophies:
Yharnam (she seems to be a Chalice boss though), the Celestial Emissary and Ebrietas
.
So I think I did pretty well on that regards for a first blind playthrough.
I missed almost all the sidequests though lol.
I sent an old lady to the church and got to Castle Cainthurst (if you can consider that a sidequest). I must have taken too long because everyone in town seemed to be dead by the time I started inspecting all the areas to see if I missed anything (or is that related to your insight? I never spent it so I got a lot of it really quickly. I did the last quarter of the game with like 99 insight).
Overall, the game was an absolute blast. It's definitely harder than the Souls games for me. The enemies and bosses are more unpredictable and avoiding damage is a lot harder as well (and I was used to playing without a shield in the Souls games so it's not because there's no shield).
I love the way they expanded upon the Souls gameplay. The weapons feel great to use and I really like their fleshed out movesets. I used almost all the hunter's axe moves for example, it's a very flexible weapon. My favourite weapon ended up being the kirk hammer (or kirk sword in my case since I used that 90+% of the time haha). I didn't expect to like it at first, but the sword moveset is extremely good with its great mix of speed and damage.
But good gameplay wouldn't mean anything without good enemies. The variety in bosses in this game is just stunning, it ranges from
small humanoid enemies to big cuthulu monsters
and everything in between. I also think that as opposed to all three Souls games, there's no bad boss in Bloodborne. I found them all interesting, and the strategies required to beat them were really varied. It combines the best aspects of the Dark Souls games (skill based bosses) and those of Demon's Souls (bosses with tricks to figure out), which makes for fun and rewarding encounters.
Gehrman is also the best final boss in the series (although, reading this thread, apparently he isn't the final final boss?). He looks cool, has a very varied moveset, he's fast and dangerous and I really liked that you could counter him — even though doing so was really dangerous. He's like Gwyn done right basically.
The art in the game is just nuts too. I absolutely love what it looks like. The way
Lovecraftian horror elements get progressively more prominent as the game goes along was very well done. The end of the game gets really freaky and I loved it.
I think that overall this blows away the Souls games in all the things I care about, which I am surprised about (DaS was my game of the generation too). I knew the game looked good before playing it... But goddamn it was even better than expected. We'll see how that holds on replays but I've got high hopes.
to either the Cathedral Ward with the weird lady on the floor or Iosef(?) clinic. So far, I've sent them all to the Ward and can interact with them. Haven't send anyone to the clinic yet. I think both places are creepy as hell and not sure I want to know what they are doing to these people! Does it matter where I send them to? Should I send them all to one place, or split them up?
Oh and yeah, GOTG so far. I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to go back to other games after this.
For people who need help with the Boss in Cainhurst:
This guy is a pain. Come into the fight with full healing items and bullets, as well as 6 or 7 bolt papers. At the start of the fight, you'll be playing a bit risky -- even though there are plenty of pillars lying around, they won't protect you from the bosses projectiles which are super damaging. Get close to the boss, and start dodging, waiting for him to do his melee attacks (and missing). This is when you go in with a punish of maybe one to two R1 attacks. Make sure you have activated a bolt paper to make these attacks go a little further.
At some point, the boss will stop moving and charge up a large AOE. At this point, you can nail him for a bit of damage, and take him down to around or just below half health (if you've been getting the hits in), but you need to RUN away after your first hits because the AOE is very large and very damaging.
Part 2 is actually a bit easier than part 1 if you're willing to be an oppertunist. Basically, you want to wait until the boss does the attack where he jumps into the sky and comes crashing down at you on 45 degree angle from a distance. Just roll away right when he is striking, and you avoid the attack. It takes him a little bit of time to get back on track, so you can safely hit him for 2 maybe even 3 R1 attacks depending.
Being oppertunist means you will not attack him at any other point. It's just way too risky -- the boss has massive stun lock power if you get unlucky which WILL end you. If you have plenty of bolt papers, the fact that he takes a while to do the move you need is a non-issue. Just play it safe, and use another bolt paper when you run out.
Occasionally the boss will plant his sword in the ground. It's worth running to it if it's far enough away and slashing it to get rid of it, so it doesn't stun you later at a really inopportune time. I found though that I could ignore them safely if they were really far away.
Throughout this fight, you should only need about 10 healing items if you are doing *really* good at dodging. You should be prepared to use anything you have, though.
I recommend bullets for the first part of the fight. It is possible to parry this boss, but the timing is hard. Instead, use the bullets to harass him, and stun him if he is winding up an attack that looks like it will hit you and you happen to be out of endurance.
It took me about 5 tries to kill this guy, and at the end I rediscovered what I knew all along about Bloodborne; be an opportunist with bosses, be willing to use a shitload of items, and be willing to try numerous times to learn the timing on the dodge i-frames. Happy hunting
So can anyone tell me if I missed something after you die to
The sack holders? Last time I played and never found a woman in the lower floor praying and asking for help that you can send to the Chapel/Clinic, my 2nd time through I was wearing Father G's clothes and I found her.
Was this NPC always here and I just missed her, or is it specific to what I was wearing?
That NPC was always there, maybe you just missed her. The first time I found her, all she did was cry. When I came back wearing church clothes, she responded and I was able to tell her to go to the cathedral. She made it there and gives you a consumable item, which you can get more of by talking to her (can only hold one at a time)
and visited her doing the red moon or whatever you find nothing but blue aliens and if you kill the aliens, they drop what ever item that npc was to drop.
i kited the spiders on to one side of Rom then ran to the other side and charged up an R2 attack with the axe. On my succesful run I spent very little time killing the lil ones. I can upload a video later cuz I'm saving all of my succesful boss fights on my first playthrough.
Thats what I ended up doing. I did cave and ring for help to beat her but I couldn't find anyone. Kinda glad I couldn't, at the end of the game I wanna be able to say I downed all the bosses my self.
I finished the boss at the end of the third layer of my Chalice Dungeon (first depth), but I didn't receive any reward or any notification. I can't go any further from the lamp, am I done here?
Agree with the bolded. I didn't find him easy to beat but mechanically he was pretty simple. I parried the shit out of him to deal most of the damage, the timing isn't that bad. After that it's just a matter of dodging shit.
Ah, yeah. I actually assumed it was impossible to get matched with someone not using your set password. Thought you meant passwords weren't working properly or something.
That's usually the way with bosses. Some people have an easy time, others a hard time. Tried to make my strategy large so there's no "gaps" in the process I went though (hate reading a guide where something isn't adequately explained), but everyone's mileage will vary. Shit you not,
Rom
was the hardest boss for me. Different challenges for different people :\
