Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

As a person who haven't played neither any Fire Emblem nor any SMT/Persona title and that really don't like otaku stuff, I got hyped both by Persona 5 trailer and by this SMT x FE trailer, and I could even say I got more hyped by this than by Persona 5. Both games look pretty cool, and I don't get why people got excited for Persona 5 and not by this one (maybe the SMT expectation). I think both games don't seem to reach an unbearable level of otaku/anime-ish like that Omega Quintet game someone posted here before, so maybe that's why I got hyped for both. I'm looking forward on trying these more-anime-like games.

Lol that picture perfectly describes the reactions so far.

Eh, I'm pretty convinced that Team Maniax is actually working on a new IP, given all of the Atlus hinting about it. I suppose the timeline would make sense, since they were still involved with SMTIV when SMTxFE was announced, though.

Honestly I could see Atlus putting them on a new IP (maybe the team even wants to do something with more freedom) for a few games until bringing them back for SMTV since SMT SJ/IV sales aren't exactly million sellers.

But I'd be pretty sad personally because while Persona is cool, it's Persona and not SMT and I'd really like more SMT-ish games between now and eventual SMTV. I mean Devil Survivor 1 & 2 totally filled that niche and were awesome, but now that team is making this, so there isn't even that. Which is why if the Maniax team wants to do something new I'd really rather it was a Digital Devil Saga/Raidou style of "new IP + still megaten".

It was following that that we were able to come to our conclusion and settle on the concept for this project. As a result of this, “Records of the Phantom ♯ Fire Emblem” follows the basic axis of what I would say are “Realistic characters who suffer from many conflicts and worries in modern-day Japan” in this RPG. It was capturing the feeling of “Fire Emblem” that was the real challenge during the development of this concept, as this is a collaboration.
I see possible grimdark story here hue hue hue hue

So let me see if I got this right:

- Nintendo teases collaboration with Atlus in a 40 seconds video in which they use characters portraits from both the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series, and end with the logo for both series with a giant X between them.
- People assume that this game was literally titled (temporarily) "Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem" and assume that since they showed the characters portraits they would appear in the game as they were, like in a Project x Zone type of thing. They assume that since Intelligent Systems is involved it would have Fire Emblem gameplay. People assume it would "feel" like the mainline Shin Megami Tensei. People assumed the the Shin Megami Tensei would mean only the main series, dismissing the possibility that it could be like "sub-series" of SMT like Devil Survivor, Digital Devil Saga or even Persona. All this form a 40 seconds trailer that had no actual info, and only teased a collaboration.
- Info from the game finally comes out, and people are disappointed that it didn't met their expectations that came out of nowhere, complain that it looks too much like Persona while Persona is part of SMT, and they never stated they would use only the mainline SMT (inb4 b-but the characters from the teaser. They used them as representation for the entire SMT franchise, including Persona, Digital Devil Saga and Devil Survivor, none of which appeared on the teaser), complain that they wanted dark and depressing like mainline Shin Megami Tensei, even though we've barely seen anything whatsoever about the story, and are assuming that it will be happy and cheerful from the artstyle, complain that they can't see any of those two from the trailer, even though it was never stated that it would use the stuff from the series as they were, instead of drawing inspiration and picking elements from both to create something a little more original, and that's assuming that this will be everything the game has to offer (For all I know, they could travel trough time/dimensions and go to a FE world and a SMT world, while what was shown here was their actual world and a little of how somehow the other worlds could be influencing it).

Yep this is NeoGAF alright.

I could understand if you don't like the artstyle, so much so that it's off-putting. But I don't understands how some people can bash a game because it didn't meet their illusory expectations built on literally nothing.

Hmm they said that the game is anticipated to be rated M. I don't think fanservice alone will earn it that. Can it?

Probably the apocalyptic setting, language, and maybe some gruesome events, which are staples in SMT and if Mara is there, it automatically warrants an M rating lol.

I can't believe people actually expected a grim dark SMT game on a ailing Nintendo home console.

I wouldn't be surprised if it started that way then the Wii u sales didnt pick up from Smash or MK8 so they switched the style to there franchise that's actually making money (Persona).

That or it was always going to be Persona X Fire Emblem but since Persona is associated with Playstation and they already had contend heading there they used the SMT name instead.

In anycase it sucks people are disappointed but this is Atlus and they have been on a roll with great games for the last decade so i'm not worried in the slightest.

I didn't watch the Nintendo direct, and usually just try to catch up on other things so forgive when I ask: but was there any info about this coming to the US?

I think you'd have to explain how one would get more excited by this then Persona 5. What makes you feel that way? Because I don't see the idea that if you like one you must therefore like the other.

Tonally, they look completely different. And gameplay wise, well, again... not sure I can tell yet how good it'll be, but Persona 5's shares heavy similarities with past games, so it's a known quantity. Additionally, it's difficult to tell how serious this will be. It seems like silly otaku pap, over the top anime style with the type of copious fanservice I cannot remotely stomach. Persona has it too at times, but the actual story tone and enemies and stuff like that are quite dark. This seems silly by comparison in terms of tone.

But I think people are just apprehensive. I don't know what to think. I expected more of a Fire Emblem and SMT influence, but it does not seem like that. So i think the game will likely turn out well, but it makes sense for people to be a bit more cautious here.

On top of that, it seems clear to me Persona 5 is operating on another level in terms of budget. And Persona 5 trailer had rad music, the trailer music here is basically sickening.

Terribly dissapointed, this isn't what i was looking forward too.

That and the FE If announcement of Dual Versions. Though unconfirmed for west, highly worries me

Someone needs to get that 'this isn't like my japanese anime" or somesort pic and re-input it to SMT and FE

Your attempt at marginalizing the pre-release trailer doesn't make it "literally nothing".

I would like to know what exactly in the two trailer of P5 footage looks like it even panders to that kind of audience.

Clearly, this game does in spades as opposed to P5. It's not what I wanted to see for the first look of a game.

As a big Persona fan myself im disappointed because Persona isn't about fan service, sure it had its moments but even then its nothing compared to what this game is presenting us with.
Really? I don't think there's anything in that trailer that's worse than the fanservice shown in Persona. Or Fire Emblem, for that matter.

I would like to know what exactly in the three P5 trailers looks like it even panders to otaku.

I mean if you play the Persona titles you know they have that stuff. Hot spring playing around stuff, companion girl stuff and of course you can always find the 'sexy outfits' to make your characters wear.

It's not nearly as in-your-face as this trailer was. This trailer practically reveled in its over-the-top anime style and fanservice, whereas Persona tends to hide that stuff a bit more behind layers of things you have to do first to even access it. I think besides the fact that people expected more SMT and FE in this game (so they're coming around from the surprise), I think it's the fanservice and tone that is turning others off.

I remember wishing when the announcement was made that it was Persona x Fire Emblem instead, so this is exactly what I wanted. The game can still have dark elements to it and we haven't even see the gameplay. It's okay for a game to have a lighter side.

It's just how people interpretend the measly crumbs we got WAY back. I don't doubt the game was still in planning stages and was announced way too far in advance before things were nailed down.

I'm talking about P5 since he mentioned P5.

We're talking about the first look of the game. Both this game and P5 have similar levels of exposure at this point.

Wait, looking at that official website's blog post, I think my assumption was totally off base: the producer for this game is Shinjirou Takada, producer for the Devil Survivor team. Need to wait for a proper translation I guess, but does this mean that this isn't actually Team Maniax's project and that the DS team are the people involved with it?

Ew, the DS games I've touched have always been mediocre, no wonder it's like this.

Yeah the P5 trailer didn't have terribly much fanservice. But rest assured the game itself will have floppy titties and itsy bitsy unlockable bikinis ;)

Like I said, I think what's turning people off is the amount of it/in-your-face nature of it. Persona games tend to be a bit more dodgy about it, they don't dance it around like it's particularly appealing. Polygons/cartoon characters just ain't sexy to me.

It should also be noted that “Records of the Phantom ♯ Fire Emblem” has given us the opportunity to work with other developers. This time, in the first edition of this creators’ blog, you got to hear comments from me, the top batter of the project. But, we have interviews planned with other ATLUS staff and developers in the future, so we hope everyone will enjoy it!

this sounds ominous.
