Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

I'm always confused my Nintendo's Neogaf. It always goes from really excited to the point of having impossible expectations to demanding the death of Nintendo because they failed to live up to the self-perpetuating hype you guys made to threads saying how Nintendo is doomed. Why?

The game looks interesting. The gameplay looks unique (from what little we've seen) and we got a hint of that dystopian world in the last few seconds with that destroyed city. We know little to nothing about this game and yet, once again, gaf is on a mission to make sure that everyone despises this game.

..that's hardly worse than Rise's CG stuff in Persona or the beach dlc for FE:A :/

Additional content released months and months later for the thirteenth game in a series hardly seems comparable to big-splash-re-reveal-trailer after two years.

So let me see if I got this right:

- Nintendo teases collaboration with Atlus in a 40 seconds video in which they use characters portraits from both the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series, and end with the logo for both series with a giant X between them.
- People assume that this game was literally titled (temporarily) "Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem" and assume that since they showed the characters portraits they would appear in the game as they were, like in a Project x Zone type of thing. They assume that since Intelligent Systems is involved it would have Fire Emblem gameplay. People assume it would "feel" like the mainline Shin Megami Tensei. People assumed the the Shin Megami Tensei would mean only the main series, dismissing the possibility that it could be like "sub-series" of SMT like Devil Survivor, Digital Devil Saga or even Persona. All this form a 40 seconds trailer that had no actual info, and only teased a collaboration.
- Info from the game finally comes out, and people are disappointed that it didn't met their expectations that came out of nowhere, complain that it looks too much like Persona while Persona is part of SMT, and they never stated they would use only the mainline SMT (inb4 b-but the characters from the teaser. They used them as representation for the entire SMT franchise, including Persona, Digital Devil Saga and Devil Survivor, none of which appeared on the teaser), complain that they wanted dark and depressing like mainline Shin Megami Tensei, even though we've barely seen anything whatsoever about the story, and are assuming that it will be happy and cheerful from the artstyle, complain that they can't see any of those two from the trailer, even though it was never stated that it would use the stuff from the series as they were, instead of drawing inspiration and picking elements from both to create something a little more original, and that's assuming that this will be everything the game has to offer (For all I know, they could travel trough time/dimensions and go to a FE world and a SMT world, while what was shown here was their actual world and a little of how somehow the other worlds could be influencing it).

Yep this is NeoGAF alright.

I could understand if you don't like the artstyle, so much so that it's off-putting. But I don't understands how some people can bash a game because it didn't meet their illusory expectations built on literally nothing.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Yeah the P5 trailer didn't have terribly much fanservice. But rest assured the game itself will have floppy titties and itsy bitsy unlockable bikinis ;)

Like I said, I think what's turning people off is the amount of it/in-your-face nature of it. Persona games tend to be a bit more dodgy about it, they don't dance it around like it's particularly appealing. Polygons/cartoon characters just ain't sexy to me.

boys trying to peep
beach scene
hot springs scene
wacky hijinxs too

I remember wishing when the announcement was made that it was Persona x Fire Emblem instead, so this is exactly what I wanted. The game can still have dark elements to it and we haven't even see the gameplay. It's okay for a game to have a lighter side.

"lighter side"
just say it like it is

Your attempt at marginalizing the pre-release trailer doesn't make it "literally nothing".

We see old renders of SMT characters and old renders of FE characters. Short shot of city, logo. END

That teaser tells us literally nothing about the game besides the fact that a city appears in it.

It's as close to "literally nothing" as you can get with a 34s teaser.

I just translated the interview with producer Shinjiro Takada. It's available on my website for reading.

Please tell me what you think, too. Sorry for this being on my site. It was just much easier to do it that way. I hope everyone enjoys it!

As a person who haven't played neither any Fire Emblem nor any SMT/Persona title and that really don't like otaku stuff, I got hyped both by Persona 5 trailer and by this SMT x FE trailer, and I could even say I got more hyped by this than by Persona 5. Both games look pretty cool, and I don't get why people got excited for Persona 5 and not by this one (maybe the SMT expectation). I think both games don't seem to reach an unbearable level of otaku/anime-ish like that Omega Quintet game someone posted here before, so maybe that's why I got hyped for both. I'm looking forward on trying these more-anime-like games.

Did we watch the same set of trailers?

Eh, guess not surprising that it looks more Persona-ish. That part of the SMT web is just more popular and mainstream. It looks good through.

The only information o that teaser was that Atlus and Intelligent Systems were collaborating on something SMT and FE related. That's it. That didn't offer a single information what the game was going to be like, how it played, what was it's thematic, what elements from both series it would borrow, from what games they would borrow stuff of (for example, will the marriage stuff from FE:Awakening be there? I don't know, they didn't offer this info, but I can't assume it will be there just because they showed the portrait of Chrom. Or, will they draw mechanics from persona, Devil Survivor and Digital Devil Saga? I don't know, they could've, since they're part of SMT, but there was no info on that).

It's fine speculating and stuff, but you have to at least have SOME information to go on.

Just an insanely bullshit Strawman. To my knowledge, nobody in this topic has any "impossible expectations" and nobody is demanding the death of Nintendo and nobody said Nintendo is doomed.

So you're going to have to point to specific posts in this topic to illustrate your point. Because right now it just reads like "I conflate criticism of a game on my platform of choice to thinking people are being meanies to Nintendo. Guys, stop being so mean to my Nintendo waaaah."

The game looks interesting. The gameplay looks unique (from what little we've seen) and we got a hint of that dystopian world in the last few seconds with that destroyed city. Nobody is on a mission to do that, and people are rightfully confused about their expectations since when you announce SMT x FE you're naturally going to have SMT and FE fans expecting certain things from the franchise to translate in some direct way. This is just quite abstract from those series. That does not mean it will be bad (I think odds are it will be good, since there is real talent behind the game), but it is confusing and the anime tone they've chosen is really unappealing as far as I'm concerned.

If you call that an impossible expectation, then I think it's clear what your agenda is here.

Hmm they said that the game is anticipated to be rated M. I don't think fanservice alone will earn it that. Can it?

Yes, it can.

If you have not played any FE(atleast the gamecube and GBA ones, dont know about the 3DS ones), SMT or Persona, you definitely can't say this is anything at all like them.

This is not anywhere close to even persona 4, (which is the closest and 'lightest', to what this trailer presents) by far.

This is SMT

This is Persona

This is FE from what i know best

Going from all those to this is just what

um did the dudes going 'what were you EXPECTING a grim smt on a nintendo console?' forget that like every single mainline SMT game barring 3 has been on a nintendo console

i mean obviously it's different times and various games are going to be targeted at different audiences but that line seems really ignorant or disingenuous

then again smt4 was just released but i find that one a lot less bleak than smt1/2 which are pretty out there

Already posted :)

I like the style actually, I don't see the Persona comparison as a bad thing.

Or rather:

- Nintendo announced the game as Shin megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, using concept art from the mainline SMT games like SMTIV and Nocture. Not to mention that the announcement itself comes at a time when SMTIV was about to be released on 3DS and there was a special SMTIV X FE: Awakening promotion going on.
- Fans asumed it would be a crossover combining the style and strenghts of both franchises
- Game is revealed and look like a bland version of persona and featuring stuff like a high school setting, Jpop, Idols singing and clothing turning into a bikini.

Again.

It's like Microsoft announcing a crossover game with EA using concept art from Halo and Mass Effect. And the game is then later revealed to be Dance Central X The Sims.
"Oh but you can't be dissapointed, they only said it was a MS/EA crossover. Dance Central and The sims are MS/EA IP's"

You're missing the point. I'm not saying that the final game won't have crap like that. The context is that it's about the content in the first look of Persona 5 and this game.

You can't even begin to compare the footage we have of both games if we're talking about otaku pandering.

What is the Japanese fan reaction to this? I'm guessing postive?

I'm gonna guess not too far from ours. SMT has expectations there too. Possibly even more, because the original games are regarded as classics. Imagine how you felt if you saw FFVIxFE announced and Terra showed up in a bikini singing an idol number.

It was following that that we were able to come to our conclusion and settle on the concept for this project. As a result of this, “Records of the Phantom ♯ Fire Emblem” follows the basic axis of what I would say are “Realistic characters who suffer from many conflicts and worries in modern-day Japan” in this RPG. It was capturing the feeling of “Fire Emblem” that was the real challenge during the development of this concept, as this is a collaboration.
That sounds like some Persona stuff right there, I'll be honest.

Also, I'm kind of less convinced that this might be something beyond what it is on a surface level because of the Devil Survivor team involvement. Thinking it was Team Maniax originally, I had it in mind that they knew what they were going for and might even subvert expectations. Now... well, I'm not sure, but I don't know if it'll be all that aesthetically.

Still real intrigued in this, of course.

this is "worse" than what's in persona..?

Y... yes?

I'm okay with Persona, that would have been fine and the harsh reception probably isn't due to the school theme, people were very positive of the P5 trailer, including myself.

This however looks like the worst elements of P4:G and FE:A amplified and somehow made even tackier, it's like Ar Tonelico with a higher budget.

Love both franchises but this isn't for me at all, sadly.

Might want to stop playing the "gaf is a hivemind" card, that can get you banned.

Come back when you have more than strawmen and hyperbole. Talk about trying to paint people as way more extreme than they are.
