Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

I just translated the interview with producer Shinjiro Takada. It's available on my website for reading.

Please tell me what you think, too. Sorry for this being on my site. It was just much easier to do it that way. I hope everyone enjoys it!
Funny reading that he's reassuring people of the FE aspects when everyone here is freaking out over lacking Megaman aspects in the trailer lol

Hearing they stuffed that stuff away is promising though, I was hoping these were just the OCs

this is "worse" than what's in persona..?

Oh totally. How dare pop idols actually wear skimpy outfits? I've never ever ever seen one in my life wear nothing but full covering clothing. Battle nighties/bikini/panties to fight against shadows is perfectly acceptable though. Makes them more agile.

It's overstyled persona, that what's off putting to me and others IMO.

I like the anime style of Persona but done to this degree...it's off putting unless you are really into otaku level stuff.
You're gonna have to give me a more detailed explanation man because I don't know what you mean by overstylised? To me it looks the same. Just the character art (not the in game stuff, the one on the website) looks different to me.

Will you update your impressions in the OT as you play it

Heh, I will. I'm sure it'll be good, the team behind this is very talented.

You're missing the point. I'm not saying that the final game won't have crap like that. The context is that it's about the content in the first look of Persona 5 and this game.

You can't even begin to compare the footage we have of both games if we're talking about otaku pandering.

Well yeah I'd agree to that. Which is why I argued that the poster saying "I don't get how you can like Persona 5 so far but not this" was clearly off base. They don't compare at all. This trailer clearly chose an entirely different tone and chose to revel in the fanservice/anime style a bit more ostentatiously. There are consequences for that in the eyes of some gamers.

That sounds like some Persona stuff right there, I'll be honest.

Also, I'm kind of less convinced that this might be something beyond what it is on a surface level because of the Devil Survivor team involvement. Thinking it was Team Maniax originally, I had it in mind that they knew what they were going for and might even subvert expectations. Now... well, I'm not sure, but I don't know if it'll be all that aesthetically.

Still real intrigued in this, of course.

Y... yes?
Thought the exact same thing.

I remember wishing when the announcement was made that it was Persona x Fire Emblem instead, so this is exactly what I wanted. The game can still have dark elements to it and we haven't even see the gameplay. It's okay for a game to have a lighter side.
there is a little bit of gameplay in the trailer
I'm hyped as hell for the game, but this pic is hilarious.

Truly a game in the same spirit of SMTIII, DDS and Raidou!

We go now to Kazuma Kaneko for his thoughts.

Wait, Kaz, it's not that bad.

We'll try again after he recovers from his hangover.

Y... yes?

hotsprings scene, beach scene, yukiko's dungeon, rise's dungeon?

and this.. have you guys seen the costumes in P4G?

I'm always confused my Nintendo's Neogaf. It always goes from really excited to the point of having impossible expectations to demanding the death of Nintendo because they failed to live up to the self-perpetuating hype you guys made to threads saying how Nintendo is doomed. Why?

The game looks interesting. The gameplay looks unique (from what little we've seen) and we got a hint of that dystopian world in the last few seconds with that destroyed city. We know little to nothing about this game and yet, once again, gaf is on a mission to make sure that everyone despises this game.

No one is in a crusade against the game or anything. The game just seems, so far anyway, far from what one would except from Fire Emblem AND SMT.

Demons, angels, armies, war and the like is what one expects from those titles. No some idols fighting mmrpg.

I guess I didn't make assumptions about what this would be, and thus wasn't taken aback by its style.

Regardless, I'm not sure what my single most anticipated video game was, but it's not number one any longer. That title goes to SMTxFE.

Considering this isn't mainline SMT or FE and is just a crossover, I'm not gonna look too far into this. I can understand people feeling like the original announcement trailer betrayed their trust but the fact that it said at the end of that trailer that it was still in early development and the announcement trailer did not explicitly say what it will be about other than have something to do with the SMT and FE universes and a burning city makes me think that expectations were a little...overreached with what we had to work with.

Alright, now that I've calmed down, I will say that I am looking forward to this on the basis that it's a new SMT spin off game, which I've been wanting for a while.

Just an insanely bullshit Strawman. To my knowledge, nobody in this topic has any "impossible expectations" and nobody is demanding the death of Nintendo and nobody said Nintendo is doomed.

So you're going to have to point to specific posts in this topic to illustrate your point. Because right now it just reads like "I conflate criticism of a game on my platform of choice to thinking people are being meanies to Nintendo. Guys, stop being so mean to my Nintendo waaaah."

Nobody is on a mission to do that, and people are rightfully confused about their expectations since when you announce SMT x FE you're naturally going to have SMT and FE fans expecting certain things from the franchise to translate in some direct way. This is just quite abstract from those series. That does not mean it will be bad (I think odds are it will be good, since there is real talent behind the game), but it is confusing and the anime tone they've chosen is really unappealing as far as I'm concerned.

If you call that an impossible expectation, then I think it's clear what your agenda is here.

I think Nintendo should have gone into more detail back then. We knew it was going to be modern day, but that was about it. Expectations were all over the place because we had basically zero to go on. Just kinda seems natural that people would be "disappointed". However, I think we should still keep an eye on this game. It isn't like the team working on it are known for making bad games, right?

Funny, because the new Persona series have bikini/ high cut/ maid/ santa suit armor

Certainly not what I expected when I heard "SMTxFE"

Like... it doesn't look like FE at all.

W/e - probably wasn't gonna get it anyways because I'm not that big on RPGs. Glad FE if is coming too.

Sure, I guess there are individual moments that are pretty bad like that in Persona, too. For the dungeons, however, I think those are totally fine because they're goal isn't strictly pandering.

But, in Persona, we don't have characters need to shed their clothing to battle or anything. I guess it's the way it's all presented at the forefront with this game, with a character's underwear being exposed indecently and all.

P4G costumes were an extra, and a lot of those fanservice scenes were too, though. I like to refer to vanilla in these subjects.

I want to be clear I'm not "disappointed" so much as cautious now. I love SMT and Fire Emblem, but this is clearly something new entirely that surprisingly takes a lot less from those series than I expected in terms of tone/direction/gameplay. So now I have to wait to actually experience it before I can know if I can add it to the list of games I love.

I think caution is the appropriate response here rather than out and out disappointment, because it might be the case where the trailer isn't even properly representing the tone of the game and the fanservice was simply overrepresented here.

This. Just, this. One hundred times over.

Dont know if I'd really call the mainline SMT games cyberpunk, not a lot of cyber and not sure if they really evince a punk aesthetic. Not that it particularly matters I suppose.

The two dungeons are fan disservice if anything. They are suppose to feel wrong like all the dungeons.

The problem is it is nothing like SMT and mostly Persona for me. I was expecting more medieval setting.

Persona scenes of fan service are subtle compared to what been shown.

And most have been played up for gag, this makes it seem like this will be a more of the style of the game.

I'm not writing this game off, it can still have the elements from SMT and FE, but this is a horrible way to reveal after so long.

Agree with Ami.

huh, so this is what they meant by fire emblem characters appearing.
will at least admit I'm not a fan of her design here..

Again.

It's like Microsoft announcing a crossover game with EA using concept art from Halo and Mass Effect. And the game is then later revealed to be Dance Central X The Sims.
"Oh but you can't be dissapointed, they only said it was a MS/EA crossover. Dance Central and The sims are MS/EA IP's"

No. It's like Microsoft and EA teases a new game, and in the teaser there's Master Chief and Commander Shepard and then they show the Halo and Mass effect logo and end the teaser. Then a long time after they come and show it's an original story with original characters with Halo Wars gameplay and Mass Effect conversation choices, set in a world that comes in contact with both stuff from Halo and Mass Effect.

And then people complain that Master Chief and Shepard are nowhere to be seen, and that they thought it was going to be a FPS/TPS even tough nor MS nor EA said anything about what the game was going to be like.

Your analogy would be true if they showed Mario x Conception II today, saying that is what SMT x FE was. But that wasn't the case, was it.
