Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

Persona scenes of fan service are subtle compared to what been shown.

And most have been played up for gag, this makes it seem like this will be a more major style of the game.

I'm not writing this game off, it can still have the elements from SMT and FE, but this is a horrible way to reveal after so long.

Agree with Ami.

You are all making this judgement based off of one scene...out of context. I am sure if you showed all the fanservice heavy moments of Person and the like out of context, people would think the same way.

We go now to Kazuma Kaneko for his thoughts.

Wait, Kaz, it's not that bad.

We'll try again after he recovers from his hangover.

I await his triumphant return.

Also, now that we've started the generic "otaku pandering" shit, I'll take my leave.

Pop idols: the quintaessential cornerstone of medieval strategy games and post-apocalyptic cyberpunk RPGs.

Seeing as it takes place in the modern era it can fit. If they want to have their game revolve around pop idols and a stadium where they're clearly fighting then thats the story they want to tell. So yea pop idols fit.

I didn't have an exact idea of what I expected or wanted out of the concept when they first revealed it (which has turned out to be fortunate in hindsight), but what they've shown here definitely wasn't among the stuff I did imagine would result from the idea lol.

Maybe it'll be a fun game so I'm not gonna totally write it off, but I can't say I'm not a little disappointed.

That's true, but then why front-load the unveil trailer with that stuff?

No. It's like Microsoft and EA teases a new game, and in the teaser there's Master Chief and Commander Shepard and then they show the Halo and Mass effect logo and end the teaser. Then a long time after they come and show it's an original story with original characters with Halo Wars gameplay and Mass Effect conversation choices, set in a world that comes in contact with both stuff from Halo and Mass Effect.

And then people complain that Master Chief and Shepard are nowhere to be seen, and that they thought it was going to be a FPS/TPS even tough nor MS and EA said what the game was like.

Your analogy would be true if they showed Mario x Conception II today, saying that is what SMT x FE was. But that wasn't the case, was it.

Thing is your concept of that crossover still sounds tonally similar to that fictional trailer and both franchises. This does not.

Dancers are like the medieval version of Pop Idols, so actually.... :P

We also don't even know how important the Idol girl is going to be, since all gameplay sections had the pseudo-Marth/Sigurd as group leader I think he might actually be the main character.

Hmm... From what I can tell from the trailer, I've seen Chrom as the enemy and Shiida as a summon or ally. Tiki is probably a guide or support character.

So, there is a Fire Emblem reference in there at least.

It's cool dudes.
We know you'll still lowkey play this simply due to fandom.
We'll be here waiting for you in the OT. Keep it real Neogaf.

Except they didnt make them the reveal trailer. These arent even moments though like an out of context bathhouse scene. They are mostly comments on the outfits and tone.

it's pretty sad.. there are a lot of things that could be discussed about the trailer but people choose to focus on 2 seconds of fanservice in it instead

Hmm duno how I feel about this as the game is not what I envisioned it to be; nonetheless, I'm excited to learn new details about the gameplay and which Fire Emblem characters will appear as I haven't seen them yet in the trailer (or I may be mistaken on that part).

Still hyped, though less so than before. Thought it would have followed more of a SMT setting.

Nah. The gameplay would have to be up to the standards of Path of Radiance/Radiant dawn and Nocturne/SMTIV for me to play it and I can't see that happening.

I came into this with zero expectations on what the game would look and play like. I had some ideas but didn't expect something over another. The trailer today revealed, to a certain extent, what we can now expect from the game. At the moment, I like what I see and I'm looking forward to more information on the game. This is all.

It seems like the girl is a pop idol and the abs dude is part of a sentai power ranger esque thing. It could actually be relevant. I'm not saying its not there for fanservice and to appeal to a certain audience but the idea that the persona series was some kind of noble series that only dabbled into that as a joke is silly.

Context matters. It could actually fit in the end. You don't have to like it and yeah it is still fanservice at the end of the day but c'mon...

I am tired of every thread going down this route...I get the let down but can we actually talk about the game now?

I'm not making a judgement really, I said this can still be more like SMT and FE.

But what am I suppose to get then, this is the only real piece of media showing off the game, this is meant to represent the game (maybe not as a whole) but this being the one piece I will judge it for what it is and it sucks for a reveal.

I'm cautious and a bit disappointed but that can change, I'm hoping it does.

Hmm I don't know. Judging from the trailer it looks like it takes place in a modern soon to be post apocalyptic world just like most SMT games but except for demons the characters use FE classes and maybe even characters as summons/transformations. I can see the crossover.

thread is just making me realize I need a break from gaf
Instead of constant whining, why not try to discuss these things yourself?

And you know this screen in this game is not play up for gag ? The girl straight up *henshin* into her underwear and smirking, not even embarrassing. Context matter.
^ also that trailer.

I think they're more focused on everything as a whole because it screams "What the heck?" more than JUST that fanservice or w/e.

Will people ever stop pretending that Persona 4 isn't otaku as hell? One of the main characters is an unironic moe pop idol. There are multiple animated hot spring scenes. There's a dancing spinoff coming out for god's sake.

Just an insanely bullshit Strawman. To my knowledge, nobody in this topic has any "impossible expectations" and nobody is demanding the death of Nintendo and nobody said Nintendo is doomed.

So you're going to have to point to specific posts in this topic to illustrate your point. Because right now it just reads like "I conflate criticism of a game on my platform of choice to thinking people are being meanies to Nintendo. Guys, stop being so mean to my Nintendo waaaah."

And I'm the strawman here? No, this right here. This very sentence pisses the hell out of me. How dare you! HOW FUCKING DARE YOU! Treat me like a goddamn child! Fuck! I...I seeing red! This is how much this comment pisses me off.

Maybe it's because I've been frequenting multiple Neogaf threads, but the general reaction I got from reading them is disgust, not disappointment. I get disappointment. I'M disappointed it isn't going to be a more crossover like game than what we currently have. I still think the game looks good. Hell, in the next part you say the exact same thing. So to accuse me of having an "clear agenda" just makes me so mad.

Nobody is on a mission to do that, and people are rightfully confused about their expectations since when you announce SMT x FE you're naturally going to have SMT and FE fans expecting certain things from the franchise to translate in some direct way. This is just quite abstract from those series. That does not mean it will be bad (I think odds are it will be good, since there is real talent behind the game), but it is confusing and the anime tone they've chosen is really unappealing as far as I'm concerned.

If you call that an impossible expectation, then I think it's clear what your agenda is here.

I'm a fan of both series. I did have some expectations. These expectations were then tempered when I realized that we knew absolutely nothing about it. Hell, we barely know anything about the combat, which is what I actually care about in these games. The dungeons/maps look like they could be used in a tactical map sense. While I do get more of a Persona feel than a Shin Megami Tensei feel in what we saw from the battles, I'll keep my hopes tempered until we learn more. I do think the biggest reason why people are disappointed (or overeating) is beacause the visual style IS a bit Persona heavy (at least when looking at it from a SMT franchise perspective).

Might want to stop playing the "gaf is a hivemind" card, that can get you banned.

Fine, gaf isn't a hivemind, but in general in many threads I visited about the game, the general feel is the same, disappointment to disgust. And it's starting to get to me.

It can, but neither of us know really.

I'm not getting the impression that it is but we will see in the coming months.

I'm mumbling "what's SMT about this?" while watching the trailer then it got to the ruined Tokyo part "Okay, this is SMT game alright".

Persona 4 also is not FE meets SMT.
