After rewatching the trailer fairly closely (I absolutely hated the bubbly attitude at first), there may be more to this...

That looks really bleak in comparison.

Will people ever stop pretending that Persona 4 isn't otaku as hell? One of the main characters is an unironic moe pop idol. There are multiple animated hot spring scenes. There's a dancing spinoff coming out for god's sake.

Play some other Vita JRPGs. There are levels of otaku hell you can't even comprehend.

I'm mumbling "what's SMT about this?" while watching the trailer then it got to the ruined Tokyo part "Okay, this is SMT game alright".

I honestly think the original treatment was this game without the pandering, then someone who is going to be very rich stepped in and said 'let's make this sell.'

No. It's like Microsoft and EA teases a new game, and in the teaser there's Master Chief and Commander Shepard and then they show the Halo and Mass effect logo and end the teaser. Then a long time after they come and show it's an original story with original characters with Halo Wars gameplay and Mass Effect conversation choices, set in a world that comes in contact with both stuff from Halo and Mass Effect.

And then people complain that Master Chief and Shepard are nowhere to be seen, and that they thought it was going to be a FPS/TPS even tough nor MS nor EA said anything about what the game was going to be like.

Your analogy would be true if they showed Mario x Conception II today, saying that is what SMT x FE was. But that wasn't the case, was it.

Except it turned out to be a crossover of Halo: Spartan Assault with elements of Mass Effect: Infiltrator.

But hey, it's still Halo X Mass Effect. Just as promised, no reason at all to feel dissapointed

The problem is people was thinking they will get a dark, gritty, apocalypse game. And this reveal make them want to punch the world lol

Yeah, that's been discussed. Basically, we just don't know that much about the game other than the <2 min. we have been presented.

We know at least one prominent member of the Devil Survivor team is involved. We know other Atlus developers are somehow involved, in some weird way. We know that they haven't presented the "Fire Emblem" facet of this game yet and that they're holding that for the future... Still, reactions for what was shown is understandable.

This game looks incredible. It was the opposite of what I expected, but I think I'll end up liking Nintendo's Persona more than I would've liked Medieval Devil Survivor Wii U.

it's pretty sad.. there are a lot of things that could be discussed about the trailer but people choose to focus on 2 seconds of fanservice in it instead

Yup. That crap gets old after a while.

And I've never understood people who complain that their Japanese RPGs are too Japanese.

This is the only reason to think there's more to the story than meets the eye.

I don't like to judge stuff based on a single trailer, but man I am really not liking what I saw. At least I am not worried about the gameplay being bad, but the rest oh boy.

I'd be surprised if someone responded to this; you make too good a point, and that wouldn't fit the agenda of someone wanting to tear the game down.

The problem is people was thinking they will get a dark, gritty, apocalypse game. And this reveal make them want to punch the world lol
because obviously smt is about pop idols and fe is about high school students lol

you can't blame people for expecting something different from whatever this is supposed to be.

huh, so this is what they meant by fire emblem characters appearing.
will at least admit I'm not a fan of her design here..

Given the stage-like setting of the battle arena and these idol images appearing in the trailer, I wonder if idol culture will be discussed a lot in this game

Damn! This is a lot better than what i was expecting (I don´t like SMT that much, i thought it was vaporware).

the fire emblem lord is wearing futuristic clothes, that says a lot about the game

Now i'm hyped as hell

Art looks so fucking good.

I'm beyond hyped. This is going to be fantastic.

I'm so hyped for this game, best thing on the Nintendo Direct and it's going to be awesome. This is coming from someone who has played every SMT (and spin offs) and FE game released in Europe.

And thanks to everyone that posted on this thread crying about some bikini, it made for some good laughs.

And I'm the strawman here? No, this right here. This very sentence pisses the hell out of me. How dare you! HOW FUCKING DARE YOU! Treat me like a goddamn child! Fuck! I...I seeing red! This is how much this comment pisses me off.

hahahahHahahhahahahAHHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahahah

*breathes*

lollahahahahah...what in the fuck hahahahah *huff puff* hahaha

ok, ok...let me gain my composure.

Dude, it's not treating you like a child to call what you did an insane strawman. Absolutely no one said Nintendo is doomed, no one has any impossible expectations and nobody said any of the shit you were claiming was prevalent in this topic. You pulled it from your ass. It's fine to make a point that you disagree with people's criticisms. It's dumb to try to make some overarching commentary about how mean people are being to poor Nintendo utilizing complete bullshit to make the point.

So that's why I suggested combing to topic and finding actual quotes to support your thesis, because otherwise absolutely no one should take it seriously. You basically called neoGAF a hivemind that was being too mean to your precious Nintendo, and the reason you thought that was for something that wasn't even true. So think your points all the way through. Nobody is expected to take you seriously if you don't.

Maybe it's because I've been frequenting multiple Neogaf threads, but the general reaction I got from reading them is disgust, not disappointment. I get disappointment. I'M disappointed it isn't going to be a more crossover like game than what we currently have. I still think the game looks good. Hell, in the next part you say the exact same thing. So to accuse me of having an "clear agenda" just makes me so mad.

Nintendo is my favorite developer. They still are just as much deserving of criticism as any other developer. NeoGAF does not have some hate of Nintendo. Right now, you see a lot of criticism of Nintendo on neoGAF because Nintendo has made a lot of problematic business decisions that have led to a disastrously unsuccessful Wii U console. Just like Microsoft with Xbox One and Sony with PS3 in 2006, when you fuck up, neoGAF criticizes you harshly. We don't hold back, and that's exactly the way it should be. This isn't a charity, people pay big money for these games.

It's clear you have an agenda because you accused this thread of multiple things that you completely made up. THAT'S why I said your agenda is clear. And that agenda is to try to get people to stop being so mean to poor Nintendo.

There seems to be a fantasy world that is separate from the 'real world'.

It would be interesting if you used different combat systems in each world, a press turn type one for the real world and a grid based SRPG style one for the other/fantasy world. Though possibly too much work.

This is the only reason to think there's more to the story than meets the eye.

I don't like to judge stuff based on a single trailer, but man I am really not liking what I saw. At least I am not worried about the gameplay being bad, but the rest oh boy.

I think it's a given that there will be some subversion of what we saw in the trailers. There's going to be some dark shit in this game for sure.

Persona 4 also is not FE meets SMT.

Whose to say? All that was mentioned in the initial trailer was that it was a crossover game. Nobody had any idea what it was gonna be in the first place because they never explicitly said.
We could've gotten another rhythm game and that trailer would not technically have been wrong.
There are clear SMT and FE influences with what was shown today. How far that extends is anybody's guess. Could be shallow as heck. Or it might just be more than meets the eye.

you can't blame people for expecting something different from whatever this is supposed to be.

Because you know the plot ? The whole high school, idol blah blah bs can be VR for all you know, all of that section can happen in the Matrix. I am just saying, don't assume something when you just look at the cover.

This is keeping my hopes up. This is coming from someone who likes Persona infinitely more than SMT but I really, reeeeeally do not like what I got from the trailer. I already have Persona 5 and DAN coming out this year. I don't need more high schooler idols only mixed with Fire Emblems combat.

On the one hand this is better than the initial reveal for me personally since I haven't played many SMT or FE games but on the other hand this is not how I wanted that to be addressed.
