Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

Super ironic that a vast number of people are calling out this game for being too anime when Fire Emblem IF has your little sister waking you up in a maid outfit.

If we want to get technical, FE has always been pretty anime. Tiki called Marth, onii-chan and Mar-Mar all the time in the original games and she ended up having a childhood crush on Marth as the stories progressed. There's probably many more things like this too.

It could have Fire Emblem elements in the combat system.

Such as the Weapon Triangle (i.e Sword > Axe > Lance)

Combine this with the Press Turn system of SMT in a sort of Fire Emblem slash SMT inspired turn based combat system that uses the weapon strengths and weaknesses that Fire Emblem has.

If we take the mixture as a combination of gameplay elements rather then focusing on the imagery and characters, it would still fit the SMT x FE descriptor.

The producer has specifically said that they're keeping the Fire Emblem elements close to the chest for now:

Also:

Yes. Yes they are.

I guess we'll see, but it's probably going to be some light mechanical stuff like permadeath or something. I was just expecting a lot more Fire Emblem and a lot less SMT, or at least a more even split with how it was named (FExSMT).

That has been a staple of the series since the first game, though. Fire Emblem has always been "anime", as much as I hate how people use that word.

Shh, no truth now, only anime

Was expecting something a little bit on the darker side ......

Looks good, but I'll have to see more to see if i'm really interested or not.

"B-b--but the artstyle in older games in-game looked less moe than they did in current games! Armor Skirt was less visible becausr less pixels!!!That means it wasn't anime!!!"

This anime narrative bullshit is grating. Anime range from high quality, non-generic stories, to well-executed bunch of clichés, to downright trash.

Isn't the term "Anime" itself just a short hand meaning for the word Animation, or in this case Japanese Animation.

So if that being the case, then wouldn't that generally effect a large scope of the medium rather then people selectively nitpicking in making the term represent a select few artistic styles with a negative connotation attached to it.

Yeah just some food for thought for you muse over.

Oh cool, this actually exists. Lol. Not surprised that Takada is working on it, since if anyone is he would be. Interesting that he's the producer and not the director though. They haven't announced other staff members either. Atlus usually announces staff pretty early when they announce titles. Maybe one of Takada's main team members are directing this time? Like Fuma Yato?

We're kinda past this, lol. But most people know what people meant by 'anime'.

I know. I get confused on the whole "too anime" complaint thing myself. Most seem to associate it with the whole "onii-chan" thing or the art style to the point of nitpicking while giving other things passes. It bothers me a lot of the time.

I dont get the too anime criticism. Both SMT (particularly the Persona subseries) and Fire Emblem have always had anime inspired artstyle.
Lol, is this like Nintendo's try to get their own Persona game? Lololol
I'm 100% sure it'll be a great game, and I'm kind of excited, but just... Lol.

Ever hear of persona Q?

The developer interview talked about the opportunity to work with many developers, so I'm guessing they have some outside help.

Can't really tell much about the game from the trailer. The style of the art and music, the exploration parts, and even the battles definitely look a lot like Persona rather than SMT. But I thought the same of Devil Survivor, and it turned out to be far more of a SMT game in tone than Persona ever was, so maybe it'll be the same here.

One thing I really do appreciate is how they didn't actually make this into a dumb crossover fanwank game. It seems like a brand new IP from Atlus with SMT elements, fused with presumably FE elements which Intelligent Systems requested (plus, there's FE in the title!). This is way more interesting than a bunch of SMT4 characters meeting up with random FE characters in some cross-dimensional storyline where they fight villains from both series. :P

Yeah it could also be partially outsourced. To who though? Tri-Crescendo? Media Vision?

I'm sure they'll get shoe-horned cameos either way in this from both sides of the fence.

Yo what the hell was up with those costumes hahahaha....the song, the cheap anime visuals......I mean I expected anime but not the tacky kind. This is not what I would of ever imagined FE x SMT would look like.

Very cool that it has the name of a new IP though.

Oh wow, that looks great. Well, the character designs could be better, but I'm glad this turned out to be a real game and not just a crossover like what people were complaining about when it was announced. Quite happy to see a world to explore. I'm surprised Takada is the one producing this now that it's revealed, though after Devil Survivor 2 I guess it shouldn't be and maybe getting a game made in this style is why it took so long. Can't wait for more details, I now have something to play on Wii U after Xenoblade!

Haha, exactly what I thought.

Mmm J-pop
Oh yeah, J-pop too, and Idol to boot!

Could you avatar quote me? lol
I haven't play FE7-FE10 yet, but I got the feeling those games with their art direction and story especially the latter two, left an impression on worldwide FE fans that the series doesn't have any root in "anime culture".
Anime is nothing but a medium. Would you complain that a video game looks too much like a movi--

oh.

Oh.
Oh you

It have Tokyo in ruin, so calling it a SMT game is a-okay!
Seriously though, do they hire the same studio for the CG animation? It moves and looks almost exactly same as FEA's CGs.

Well, one site is saying that this person is one of the character designers for this game if that helps. http://dic.pixiv.net/a/toi8

I dunno who they are but Takada does say they're working with "renowned outside creators."

Other than demons from SMT and classes/equipment from FE, I don't think so. If they wanted to push that sort of fanservice element they would have in the trailer.

I know who toi8 is. But getting a freelance artist to design characters for a RPG is pretty normal. I'm more interested in who the people are developing the game itself!

Ah, my mistake! I'm curious about that too.

Some of the bosses in the trailer have the names of villains from Awakening. Also, Tiki being an idol?

I think anime is just another word for "thing I don't like," similar to hipster.

The hilarity of this entire thread is I remember how many people were bitching about how anime Smash has gotten because of Robin, Lucina, Ike, etc.

I wonder how large the release gap will be between the Japanese release and the US release. There's no chance it doesn't come here, right? I shouldn't have to be concerned about it staying in Japan right? haha... I just really want my Wii U to continue having life in it, so I'm paranoid

What are the odds Tantalus was actually porting P5? lol

But either way, after much thought and rewatching the trailer (music is catchy), I am a-ok with this and I like that its a fresh idea rather than what I had originally been thinking would turn into the game.

100% localization, and probably not slow either, if Atlus handles it rather than Treehouse internal, or some other external localizer like 8-4.

Buy the awesome indies!

There is seriously post about that? I thought Ike is the least "anime" cast from FE lol

Why would it have been in today's US Direct, with Bill Trinen directly saying Winter 2015, if they weren't bringing it to America?

Oh duh, it's 2:37am here, my mind has begun shutting down lol. Yeah of course it's coming to the USA, it was in the US Direct haha. I hope the game isn't long delayed from its Japanese release then. Wii U needs more Holiday games.

I mean for some people perhaps that is how they're using the term, but there is a distinctive element to certain types of anime that certainly are definable and not nearly as vague as the qualities one might try to ascribe to a hipster (which has become hilariously broad now).

So when people say it's "anime", I think many (like myself) do not mean the entire spectrum of anime which encompasses a lot of distinctive tones and styles, but of a specific type of anime that is characterized by the over-the-top humour, you know giant faces exploding, huge sweat beads on the head, the intentional upskirt shots, the ten year old girls in skimpy outfits thousand year old dragon girls, the otaku fanservicey type. There's a style of humour that Japanese animation has a lot of the time that is just not relatable to the types of humour you might see in European or American cartoons, and it's OK to have a preference I'd say.

It's the tone that is putting me off compared to my expectations of a game more distinctively SMT and FE. But I mean to me that's a relatively minor issue, I love Disgaea for christ's sake. My favorite SRPG series. I just want the gameplay to be good, and at this point I think it's just better to be cautious since it's clear now this is going to be more of its own thing than previously thought. Which is cool, I like surprises. Just can't be as so easily anticipatory now as I was going to be if it was more predictably in line with the other series in terms of tone and gameplay.

Not sure when the last time Atlus didn't bring over one of their own titles. Seems like we've gotten everything for several years.

So, are they school j-pop idols who fight evil by night? Neat.
Fighting evil seems to be part of the jpop idol persona, although not all of them really look like idols. It seems like the battles shown are all in a stadium though.

Which really isn't a bad thing, FEA's CGs looked absolutely gorgeous and were very well animated. and the CGs here are more subtle-looking than FEA's and actually look more 2D.
