Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

Catgirl may tie in with her personality as their costumes actually mean something, but even with that costume its nowhere near the level of this.

My point was that the pandering to certain demographics is there. Saying "it may tie into her personality" is simply an excuse that can be levied with any sort of pandering.

The jpop reveal bamboozled the fuck out of me. I was watching the direct with my roommates and a couple of us started going nuts when we saw Atlus and Nintendo pop up, then we were convinced it WASNT SMT x FE, then it turned out to be SMT x FE.

I barely know what to think anymore. I'm gonna keep a close eye on it, and I'm cautiously optimistic, but good lord this isn't what I was expecting AT ALL.

Probably? Kamikaze Douga is a known quality in the industry now as a CG animation studio who can do celshaded stuff really well. Other than Awakening they also worked on the great looking FFT PSP FMVs, the promo CG stuff for Dragon Quest, the CG OPs for the new Jojo anime, etc. They also made the CG FMVs for the recent Vita Digimon game.

Edit: Oh, I forgot they also did the opening and CG FMVs for Persona PSP. So both Atlus and Intelligent Systems has worked with them before.
How did I not know this before? Wow. Their works really do speak for themselves. They've got the kind of distinctive look that actually comes close to being 2D while actually looking three-dimensional, if you get my drift.

But that aside, I just noticed in one of those pics that there's a TURN ORDER BAR at the top of the screen in battles. I'm so fucking excited now lolololol.

Yeah, I love having a turn order bar in turn-based battles, it really adds an extra layer of depth for you to plan out your moves and to speed up your characters as well as slow down the enemy. Seeing Marino in Mega Man X: Command Mission go Hyper Mode and just dominate the order bar with extra turns is a blast.

I'm really hyped for this. Even if it wasn't what I was expecting. It definitely looks fun.
I hope they keep the amount of fan service to a minimum.

There are also a few scenes that look like Social Link sequences. Also, the Fire Emblem stuff kinda looks like how Personas look and are used for attacking in the Persona series. There is a very strong resemblance to some of the set-up, themes, and presentation of Persona 4.
Some of this sound like reaching tbh, the character transforming at battle for example is nothing I would pick from Persona.

Have you ever seen or played an actual SMT game before :P

Let say, they're in Tokyo, and?

There's almost nothing in that trailer that I will identify to SMT series.

Hell, even the official website is like weird neon-green-off-P4.

Heck, the logo alone is SCREAMS Persona

SMT, the mainline series at least, have Tokyo as its setting and main motifs. The only reason why SMT Strange Journey couldn't be called SMT IV is because the game don't take place in (ruined) Tokyo. Persona 5 also called to return to its root after showing demon as its enemy AND take place in Tokyo.

U don't need to link to Persona here. It is already more or less SMT and FE.

Again, the pandering in this trailer is way higher than that. Did you see people complaining about the girl having a cat costume in the P5 trailer? No. Do you see people being off put about the pandering in this game? Yes.

Character designs where you can see underwear.....come on now its so obvious. I just did not expect it to come from this collab.

The analysis going on in the last two pages have made me way more interested in this than I was at first glance. It seems there may actually be a lot "hidden" under the surface so to speak.

That song fucking sucked on an unrelated note

Er yes actually :P

Also let's be real, the only difference between "pandering" and "not pandering" is whether or not you like or are comfortable with whatever is being "pushed" :P

Also, note the icons next to the character portraits clearly indicating class. The green hair girled (Tsubasa) is a Pegasus Knight, while the blonde girl is an Archer, while the main looks like Lord.

The reality pandering or not, the theme is very clearly idol related.

I forgot this existed, so it's a nice surprise to see it resurface.

The "realistic characters who suffer from many conflicts and worries in modern-day Japan" comment makes it sound more Persona than any other offshoot, but I've thought this before about some of these spin-off series and I've been proven wrong. From what little I could rather from the trailer, it looked like it was drenching a large part of its aesthetic in flashy lights and performance stages. The designs also looked like it going to lean into the idol performer stuff. There are plenty of routes it could be taken into stuff, so speculation may be a bit early.

The Fire Emblem aspect of the product weird me out a bit. The few things I could recognise were bizarre redesign references, and most of it seemed to be limited to some kind of alternate world. Not a huge fan of the designs in general so far, because there is such a large contrast at play, but it may grow on me over time. Either way, they've got my attention.

Ummm..... Pegasus Knight in FE series had always wear very revealing clothing.

I would say the reason why the fanservice looks a lot bigger than usuall is simply the 3D now is on bigger screen and the character is much more detailed.

Honestly it looks more like a stealth Persona X Fire Emblem crossover that will feature SMT characters.

Although it's not really WHAT I was expecting, I am pretty sure I'll love this game either way regardless of how anime it looks. #TeamIThinkImHype?

Its hardly the same reaction. The reaction here is far more negative. There are clearly different levels of pandering.

Reaction here is America doesn't get nor respect Idol culture.

It's clear that the idol life here is a pivotal kind of escape for the MCs when they refer to the daily lives and problems the kids face in today's society.

It looks a lot like Persona to me. Colours, typography, screen UI, perspective all remind me more of Persona than FE or SMT. I have no issue with that.

I imagine any sane japanese SMT fan will fucking throwup.

I'm sure I could avatar quote this if I wanted to, but I won't.

You should very well know the Japanese audience and their sensibilities towards this stuff is very much different in how it's interpreted in the West.

Maybe they are waiting for more info first before overreacting? After. All, we do see Ruined Tokyo in the teaser. Who knows if the second half of the game everything goes ruined path like DeSu or SMT?

I know I'm being really biased with the images I chose, but they both sum up how I feel about the different directions the series go. I could go find better examples and make a better case, but I'm tired.

They both hit every criteria, but it's pretty clear that stylistically, they're not the same. #FE feels way more Devil Survivor than Persona.

i kind of doubt it will, but oh the debates that will be had from now into eternity.

I actually wouldn't care if this game turned out to be better than Persona 5 or not.

I am getting both, so on the chance that SMT X FE does manage be that good, then that simply means two quality jRPGs to play rather than one

How is that the same as what I'm talking about. Its not. For instance the girl on the far left.

I'm not inherently calling it wrong btw. I'm just noting the change that I find off putting.

Man, you'd think the creators of the Persona series wouldn't make such a basic looking game.

wait what?

Reading this thread a bit, I'm actually quite a few people don't like it... I'll repeat that I haven't played any SMT or Persona games, so there may be some mistakes on the way I view things.

SMT always seemed a bit fantasy-medieval like FE and my first though for a crossover was a "union" of these worlds. Basically, FE and SMT characters from different eras. A bit like Project X Zone or Hyrule Warriors but with FE and SMT characters. This may please some people but it would essentially be a fan service game. Not being a fan of one of the series, my interest was pretty slim and I mainly cared for the FE aspect of this.

And now we got this. It seems to follow the Persona games more. Modern and high school setting, maybe even that anime fan service stuff. The settings and characters are unique and essentially, it seems like it has elements of FE series. It's not a crossover but a game with elements of FE, made by Atlus. And I like this much more than a crossover of two somewhat niche series.

Also, I don't really find the anime stuff that bad. Sure, the bit with the exploding clothes was kind of ridiculous but I can't see the game being full of things like that. And after watching the Persona 5 trailer, the game seems even more pleasing to me. It's really fresh for Wii U. I just only hope that this will be out by the end of 2015 in Europe...

They did... actually.

Wait... seeing a thong is over the top/obvious pandering but nekomimi cosplay is not? In what alternate reality have I slipped into.

This is so not what I was expecting...

Then again, I was expecting the game to be quietly cancelled, so... I guess this is better than nothing. I was just waiting it to be more... serious? And less Idol, I suppose. Will give it a try depending on how the final product ends up being. Not writing it off quite yet.

Its hardly the same reaction. The reaction here is far more negative. There are clearly different levels of pandering.

Betrayed expectations. Everybody, including myself, had a mental image of something more similar to Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. This (so far - again its becoming more clear we aren't seeing everything) looks different enough as to cause some tonal and expectations whiplash.

So...what happens if this game ends up being better than Persona 5?
Who the fuck cares?

It's the combination of everything, really. SMT also tend to be more somber experiences from the get go.
And I was being facetious with the anime label.

Pretty much. I was watching the trailer during the directand my reaction was, woah , nintendo got a exclusive persona game? Until I saw the fire emblem bits and realised what had happened.

If anything, this is Persona X FE, not SMT.

I'm willing to concede the point here, though I imagine the prevalent reaction in this thread comes from people being more familiar with Persona than the Devil Survivor series.
