Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

It does look aesthetically like an evolution of the first Devil Survivor (didn't play the second one) and while I didn't care for how that game looked it at least had a darker tone that I hoped would carry over. That seems to be completely absent.

Yuuuu. That ruined Tokyo never looks more pretty lol.

In SMT4

While this one still looks so pretty.

I don't think ruined Tokyo is what we're seeing there.

Maybe all the idols in Tokyo-as-it-was-before-it-got-effed came from FE-land?

The second Devil Survivor is much goofier and turns up the trashiness in the designs. So this trailer definitely fits along that path.

Well that's another theory I guess? I feel that it is still Ruined Tokyo here as the building seems to have been filled with plants and wild birds.(+ this had SMT love bits which love destroying Tokyo)

For some reason I think the vocalist in the song sounds a lot like Clara from ClariS. The timbre of her voice is really similar, and the vowels are pronounced the same way. The composition is right up that type of song they usually sing too.

Though, they finally replaced Alice a little bit ago.

Well we're talking about the director of Langrisser and Growlanser games as well. He has no issues with engaging a (great) hentai artist design characters for his games. :P

I think some of those expectations were misplaced. Personally I always thought it made more sense for the Devil Survivor team to be working on this, while "Team Maniax" worked on whatever next SMT project Atlus has planned in the vein of Raidou, Strange Journey, and SMT4. Either that, or this project was vaporware. Turns out it's real, and the Devil Survivor director is indeed the producer.

I mean just ask yourself, if you're Atlus, why would you prioritize your key development staff on an untested collaboration project which you won't fully own, rather than working on the next entry in a franchise which you have full control of and would solely profit from it.

Wait, Atlus owns this?

man i had no idea some of you guys were unhappy with this, i think it looks great!

it not being a tactics game and more like a high school kids RPG means I'm probably gonna be able to finish this one...

While I'm not happy there is no Kaneko, I'm really digging that art style on the character art. I just wish the style carried over graphically.

It reminds me of Huke, which is a good thing.
The salt mines must be working overtime for this thread to be this long!

Gonna get this. Just because it wasn't what i was expected (and god damn it wasn't) doesn't mean it looks bad. It looks pretty great actually.

Hiks. Such strong word. And here I thought the character design is not bad especially from Durarara designer.

Otome.png

I'm fine with most of his durarara designs, and I fucking love his Yozakura Quartet art, but the ones in DS2 were pure garbage.

The example you picked especially.

Looks good, can't wait to see more.

Where's the collective hat eating going on, didn't most of GAF say this was vaporware?

Nintendo delivers, once more.

So...what happens if this game ends up being better than Persona 5?
Realistically, almost no one is going to play this game. Even if it does end up being a better game, I doubt most people will care.

As others have said, for those of us who own both systems, we'll just have a very good year.

It's all good, fans of Vita idol games and Compile Heart and Ar Tonelico games will also find a lot to love in this trailer.

Yeah I look at this and I have no idea how people can say "This is exactly what an SMT x FE cross-over ought to be!"

After the initial knee-jerk reaction...I'm a little more okay with what this is turning out to be, especially after seeing the FE characters re-imagined as SMT-like demons...But I still wish we were getting grimdark demons taking over FE land or Knights and Loli dragons fighting demons in post-apoc Tokyo. I mean, we're still getting that but I'd rather substitute the J-Pop for some quality SMT brand edge.

What he said and your reply don't really correlate...
I don't like Compile Heart games aesthetic, especially Neptunia one so his post should make sense now.

I'm completely in line with your post. I'm fine with this, though rather unexpected, but I wished it isn't J-Pop Idol like that.

I think many people will find it quite different than they had originally expected.

Well, they certainly got that part right. Total disappointment.

That said, some of the concept art is nice. If it wasn't for the pandering idol rubbish or the fact that this used to be SMTxFE, I could be interested.

So you're throwing the Devil Survivor team under the boat.: p

No? They're being given the chance to make something different and substantial here. If they succeed, it's good for everyone involved. But even if they fail, Atlus would not have spent resources which could have gone to another SMT game instead. Devil Survivor games don't sell much anyway. I love the games but let's not pretend that they're a huge success for Atlus compared to other series they have.

so happy it wasn't cancelled, tbh.
What I saw is weird, but interesting.
really, can't wait for more info: is it 2015 for Japan only, right? hopefully will be Spring 16 for EU

Yeah but it is still on a WIIU, but i guess things can go well if the right people are catered to?

Sorry if this is a bit harsh, Aostia. But it seems Wii U is still going to get new game right?^_^

People actually thing this is going to be on par with P5? Visually alone it's not even in the same league.

Reminds me more of the shitty Vita rip off games like that zero one or that conception one.

In durarara, we had almost equal character to Otome there though.

I didn't like her either.

I didn't say durarara's designs were especially good or anything,

I liked YQ's Nurse looking variants quite a bit more as well, but I didn't especially like her outfit either.

Looking at that bar at the top of the screen during the battle scenes reminds me a lot of the IP Gauge system from the Grandia games. I won't get too excited and claim that it's the case, though. It may just be some kind of turn-based indicator. While it may be just that the characters were doing actions in every battle scene, the bar itself was static throughout the trailer, so I don't know what to think about that.

Honestly, I'm pretty interested in this, and more than I would be in a pure crossover. I feel like if it were a pure crossover, it would just be mashing characters up in ways that make zero sense ala Project X Zone, and I'm not super into that. However, it seems like they're basically creating a new IP which weaves FE into a modern day setting, and I think that could be more interesting than a straight mash-up.

Granted, like most here I'm not too wild about the aesthetic and would have preferred a less extravagantly J-pop vibe, but I don't really care all that much so long as the gameplay is good. Not to mention most of the recent Atlus games have been at least fairly "animoo" anyway so I'll likely be able to overlook it in the long run.

:p was there for a reason...

Honestly, I really like what I'm seeing, from a lot of perspectives. I like that a team that was previously mainly on handheld stuff is doing a console JRPG.

I like that it appears to be more its own thing, borrowing from both franchises, rather a straight cross over. That way, it can focus on its own strengths and merits, rather than be a crossover fan service fuel game.

And it's not a popular opinion, but I like that it's different, in a very Japanese way,(idols) Every now and then we hear Persona get criticised for always being about high school. So now we get idols and stuff. What's wrong with a new perspective? Why must it be seen as pandering, just because it's idols instead of say...salary man?

For all intents and purpose, this is practically a new IP.

Watched the trailer again and it looks like the main characters can channel the souls of classes from the Fire Emblem universe and equip/materialize them as robots/weapons or armor. The knight class becoming a motorcycle and the pegasus turning into a robotic pegasus. Reminds me of Djinns from Magi.

actually, it doesn't seem so. SMT x FE was announced in 2013; Fatal Frame 5 was already released in Japan.
We'll see if N will actually announce new games for a full 2016 support. If they will not at E3, as THEY said alongside the Zelda delay, not me, I think we could just see the release of already hinted/announced games (such as Zelda, this, Pokken and Project Treasure...maybe some delayed software) in 2016.

They could use words that actually convey what they're trying to say.
But they don't need to. We're on NeoGAF discussing a new crossover game between Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei. We're all humongous weeb nerds that know exactly what someone means when they say something is too anime.
Super ironic that a vast number of people are calling out this game for being too anime when Fire Emblem IF has your little sister waking you up in a maid outfit.
That was the worst part of the new trailer, and the "Oni-chaaaaan~" stuff only lasted a few seconds. The skimpy outfit idols were the main focus for almost the entire SMT x FE trailer. Huge difference.

Edit: whoops, looks like I forgot to refresh and for the most part the anime debate seems to be over. I'll stop now before this derails again.

All aside, the game does look interesting. I just need to know a bit more about what theyy're doing with the story, themes etc.
