Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

I'm not complaining about another good looking RPG on my Wii U after Xenoblade X.

I don't think I'll be disappointed considering the companies working on it.

ok who is really developing this game? did Atlus subsidised the development to some other random dev?

We don't know yet. Atlus is leading the development, but they could be outsourcing it or collaborating with another developer as well. There's no development staff revealed so far other than the producer, who is the head of the Devil Survivor team (formally Careersoft).

What the fuck is this shit? Definately not what I was expecting... :( Some generic animu shitto instead of Fire Emblem combined with that other franchise. Fuck.
Umm did you not play the best selling fire emblem game?

It's Atlus. The specific team within Atlus is vague as of now, but the producer heading the game is Shinjiro Takada, who directed Devil Survivor and Growlanser. The character designer is toi8.

Members involved in this project have been left intentionally mysterious right now:
It should also be noted that “Records of the Phantom ♯ Fire Emblem” has given us the opportunity to work with other developers. This time, in the first edition of this creators’ blog, you got to hear comments from me, the top batter of the project. But, we have interviews planned with other ATLUS staff and developers in the future, so we hope everyone will enjoy it!

Man the reception to this game's reveal is super divided.

Seems Persona fans love it and FE fans don't.

Maybe. I don't believe it's that simple. I think everyone is surprised by what was shown and the direction it went in. I think the problem is people had to much time to fill in the massive void Nintendo left when they announced the crossover/collaboration. Something like Hyrule Warriors shaped what the game could possible be.

I think the issue to a degree is what one built up in their head and how much it potentially clashes with what was shown. Ignoring all those that make weebo comments, etc. Just focusing on people that might have been genuinely interested in what the game could be. If someone was fully expecting something and firmly believed that for whatever reason I can see them having more and more of an issue in regard to what was shown (be they dislike it or disappointed) but that's on them in the end.

I had no idea what they could be doing so I had no expectations. That could very well be why I came away from the trailer very positive and loving what I saw. It could have easily been a game with turned based combat and closer to a traditional JRPG (due to my experience with SMT 4 and Soul Hackers) or a SRPG (Fire Emblem). It being on the Wii U meant it could look drastically different then either of games I played as they were on the 3DS. We did know it would be a Wii U game right? Or assumed it right?

I still think that if one is a RPG fan of any type they should know there is more to a RPG then what is first shown off. That's always been the case unless there is massive blow out from the start and I don't think there has been in the past. These are two RPG series coming together. People should have more patience and be far more open minded. Be curious and confused. Not condemning the game or writing it off after the first official information about it.

This. This is what I was getting at when I asked if people even paid attention to the games they were playing. Or worse actually played the games they are claiming to have played.

I'm very hyped for this game but not as much as I thought I would. The Devil Survivor team can do cool stuff but I'm not sure they're up to such a task. Unless I'm mistaken they've only ever made handheld games until now (which explains the "serviceable" graphics).

I'll probably get this game either way. Really want to know more about the battle system. Will it have "once more", "press turn" or something else entirely? who knows

I feel that "developers" is a poor choice of words for the translation there. He says "creators" in Japanese which generally refers to creative talent not necessarily linked to the actual development of a game - ie: character designers, monster designers, artists, composers, writers, etc.

I should admit, that i'm a little disapointed that the game isnt What i imagined it was going to be without any gameplay footage and a vague teaser , but i'm looking forward to this game because its another rpg and its another game for the wii-u. But people thinking the games will go back to their roots is asinine because we all know IS would be stupid to drop everything that made FEA sold well and kill off that fanbase that spent money on that and have the series go back into obscurity... lets be honest Fire emblem was more niche than those neptunia games before Awakening and now its just as well known as persona (which for atlus sells much better than the smt series, p3 and p4 that is, no way we're going back to p1,2/ smt if)

Seems Persona fans love it and FE fans don't.

The problem is that mainline SMT fans and old FE fans had hope for this game. Not Persona (post 2) and Awakening fans which seemed just vaguely interested back then.

It's understandable the formers are pretty bummed out by this trailer so far.

Even new Persona fans aren't used to this level of skeeve, even if P4 Golden did begin to touch on it with the added content.

If this trailer was shown and it was introduced as "Persona 5" instead of what we got two months ago, the storm would be much larger than it is now.

I guess I still was expecting a FE-styled SRPG with SMT elements.
I definitely would have preferred this but at least the game still exists in some form.

Oh cool, we're at the point now where we have to draw a line in the sand between "old FE" and "Awakening" fans. Wonderful.

Yeah, I'm not sure where this idea that Persona fans are instantly into this trailer because it's bright, poppy, and really "modern anime" styled.

That's definitely not why I got into Persona, and knowing the people who like Persona on this board, that's not really true for a lot of them either.

That line was drawn a long time ago. Just like old RE fans and RE4 and onward fans. Obviously you can like both, but to pretend a huge shift didn't happen is absurd.

anime = persona for some reason i think?
dont mind these pictures of some characters from an SMT series, this is what SMT fans want.

The art style is a little different, otherwise it's FE to the core. If anything it's remarkable how many elements from previous games they incorporated into Awakening. Drawing an analogy to the massive shift in design philosophy between RE and RE4 is quite frankly laughable.

I'm a huge Fire Emblem fan, but I haven't posted any SMT or Persona games and I'm quite interested in this. Kit disappointed at all. I like the modern setting too

There's definitely a shift between previous FE games and Awakening. Not as big as RE, but it's there.

To be fair, I still liked Awakening.

I'm not into Persona, but when I look at the trailer for P5, it at least has its own identity, while being way more classy than this.
I still usually prefer Japanese games, but the trailer for this game was just painfully generic, throwing all the currently worst anime tropes at you. It's so generic and desperately pandering to a certain audience, the US equivalent for this title would be a military FPS with a grim looking, bald marine on the cover.

I'm not really feeling that trailer - it didn't match the atmosphere of SMT or FE aside from some character design. Still, I'll reserve judgment until we see more than a couple seconds of gameplay. The game will almost certainly be quality given the developers.

Certainly wasn't the SMTxFE I was expecting though.

There is a shift between every game in the FE series to another. FE7 to FE8 was a shift. PoR is a shift from FE8. Awakening introduces some new elements and a slightly different artstyle while bringing back multiple elements from previous games in the series.

The whole thing is ridiculously overblown by fans who are high on nostalgia.

stop pretending like Awakening wasn't a huge shift in the series.

I haven't played an FE game since GC as i said earlier in the thread. And i definitely have never owned a 3DS(or any handheld since the PSP days..). So no, i don't identify FE with stripper elves.

And this is far out there even for P4G. Again, the only thing to even get even remotely close to such a thing, and even then it wasn't anywhere near as skeevy.

Hopefully P5 doesn't go further in this direction.

For someone who is a fan of both SMT and FE, i just can't reconcile how this kind of thing has anything to do with what i was anticipating

As a Battlefield fan this game looks pretty good.

This "as a fan of" is getting a bit silly IMO I liked the trailer. but I don't think it's directly comparable to Persona, SMT, or Fire Emblem at this point. I'm guessing it only borrows minor elements from the 2 series. I definitely believe people calling it "too anime" or "the worst of anime tropes" are being a bit hyperbolic.

Exactly, it's not. It's its own thing until we know more.

stop pretending like Awakening wasn't a huge shift in the series.

Most aspects of Fire Emblem: Awakening were refinements or the elimination of past elements in the series. (Id est: Pair up= Refinement, Loss of canto= Elimination).

The three biggest shifts I saw were map variety, casual mode, and, most important, marketing.
There is a shift, yes, but not a huge dividing line that certain people say it is.

I think the trailer looks solid, but I'm not without a raised eyebrow or two considering the original concept. Still, it definitely looks different.

I actually really dig the song the plays during the trailer too. Has anyone pulled that out and uploaded an mp3?

Yup.
Its not Persona until we see a mascot character.
Persona 1 and 2 weren't like that :x
Teddie's dumb

This was the most hype part of the direct. I haven't played FE or SMT (only P4G, which is somewhat related) but I'm REALLY looking forward to this. So much so that I should probably go back and play some SMT and FE.

This is different than what I expected, sure, but I can get behind a highschool/idol au featuring FE/SMT characters. It's like fan fiction in game form! I just wish most of female characters had better looking costumes, and that the male characters were a bit more stripperiffic.

They should have given this game a tentative English title. It's weird that it's known as "Shin Megami Tensei & Fire Emblem Crossover Project."

Yeah, when the trailer finished I said "Come on! Say it's title so I can refer to it by name!". I had also wished they called it Fire Emblem if here and not just Fire Emblem (tent.).

Persona is probably my favourite game series and I absolutely despise the theme of this game.

I've no doubt the game will be awesome but unless there's something more to it than what we see here (that Tokyo shot makes me think/hope there will be) I am not going to like this idol thing one single bit.

I mean, this doesn't even look like it was effected by Persona, because Persona is mostly above this. This looks like the product of otaku pandering. I do believe Atlus wouldn't make an entire game with that focus, though.

It seems the game will have its own identity, so far the Fire Emblem references are not straigth evident, in fact I would say you could totally remove FE from the title and the game would still work, of course having FE stuff is more atractive from a Nintendo marketing perspective.

I'm not a huge fan of the art style. The medieval elements clash a lot with the Tokyo setting, but I guess that there are not that good many ways to combine SMT and FE visually in the first place. I also don't like how the SMT influence seems to be restricted to Tokyo and the younger characters.

Anyway, it's still interesting to see where this is headed.
