Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

I haven't actually played any FE, Persona games etc
Last JRPG I played was probably some version of FF on the DS

For some reason I will probably be buying this, probably the school outfit

As an SMT, Persona, and FE fan, I'm mixed on this trailer. I was looking forward to an FE-ish SRPG with SMT demon elements, so I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't seem to be as much of a blend of the two franchises as I was expecting. Still, as a Persona fan, and fan of console JRPGs in general, this has still given me a huge reason to buy a Wii U. I do hope there are strategic elements to the gameplay though. There's still a lot of mystery around it.

I think the whole SMTxFE appellation gave everyone a very different impression of what this was going to be than what it is. People looked at that and thought straight fusion of an SMT game and an FE game, not a new game with elements and some influence from both, which is what this trailer appears to show.

If this trailer was shown and it was introduced as "Persona 5" instead of what we got two months ago, the storm would be much larger than it is now.

Yyyyyup. A little too fanservice-y...and not as much of a leap as P5, either. I mean, it looks superficially Persona but it's definitely different.

Most aspects of Fire Emblem: Awakening were refinements or the elimination of past elements in the series. (Id est: Pair up= Refinement, Loss of canto= Elimination).

And most of the elements "eliminated" by Awakening were actually eliminated by Shadow Dragon and New Mystery. Awakening was a continuation of those, not Radiant Dawn like people enjoy pretending for some reason.

I don't see why people keep thinking idol. There is just 1 character singing and that's it. It seems to me it is more gladiator battles or a big tournament. We see one stage surrounded by fans and people are fighting on it.

I have to wonder if that is an actual stadium with real people cheering on the fight or if its for a dungeon and those are "shadows".

The possible plot has me interested.

fans are waving glow sticks in a gladiator battle?

I shouldn't be surprised by this, yet I'm still surprised lol

Music motifs, the crowd has glowing sticks, and heck when the characters attack they're literally called artists

I mean, it's pretty blatant.

Come on, man. You can like it or not, but it couldn't be more blatant that the trailer features idol elements all over the place.

I'm very hyped for this game but not as much as I thought I would. The Devil Survivor team can do cool stuff but I'm not sure they're up to such a task. Unless I'm mistaken they've only ever made handheld games until now (which explains the "serviceable" graphics).
If true hype increased 100 fold, finally a new project from them. I'd rather play a game from them than the other Atlus teams tbh. I expect no less than conversation choices every 10 lines and 60 endings.

Not to mention the outfits are idolish too at times, and the combo counter reads "Session". That sure as hell doesn't sound like gladiator or tournament to me. It's clearly a diva/idol performance theme. Not a bad thing, but western JRPG players seem to hate the idol theme so. What we have here is a mesh of SMT/FE with the monster/armor design. It's clearly trying to be a bit more modern, but also retaining its fantasy foundation with the plating and crowns etc.

I hate idols as a theme generally but I can get into an idol based gladiatorial battle system.

Should have a dress grid system like ffx-2

The music in Eastern Kingdom of Mikado is the shit, completely shames any OST I found in any medieval RPG so far.
I wish that portion is longer or the musics stays with us much longer
It helps that instead of pure "medieval" it has that eastern element to it. It comes through in the art and the soundtrack.

I'm more getting the idol theme from the footage where the MC is running around as there are instances where you can see idol imagery on the building and such. I feel it's a theme that this game will tackle but not in an unexpected way. At least, that's what I hope.

I'm confused why ppl thought this wasn't going to be a standalone title with borrow references from both series. They also announced that it was going to be a full RPG not a srpg like ppl we're hoping. Yes I can see this is a new rpg series for nintendo if ppl stop going overboard from this trailer and give it time to sink in and maybe surprise that it will be a truly flesh out game. The title itself got me excited and I wouldn't be surprise is if a second trailer comes out and it's all gloom and doom depicting that there are two sides to this unknown game.

anime = persona for some reason i think?
dont mind these pictures of some characters from an SMT series, this is what SMT fans want.
/s

I think that's from the Devil Summoner spinoffs. I think what's got people upset is that they expected it to be thematically linked to the mainline SMT games, which are the complete opposite of light hearted. When you're expecting grimdark (which would not have really suited the FE games) and get this (which looks rad as hell) you tend to end up confused.

And to top it all off, the sharp symbol (#) is in the title.

Btw, sharp (#) means higher pitch, so does that mean with #FE in the title we'll get a cast of FE characters with higher pitch voices? I think sooooo!

Referencing the two games brings certain expectations. From that trailer and the comments here, I don't think either side is satisfied from the result, because, as you say, IR is its own thing entirely. It may be (slightly) inspired by both FE and SMT, but it certainly isn't a cross between the two.

At least, as a Fire Emblem fan with no knowledge of SMT, this is how I see it.

I actually wonder if they went the opposite direction for Japanese appeal? Apparently Westerners favour brooding, dark RPGs. And which company encouraged the decision?

Is the green wave icon Zan or Elwind? Curious as I'm not sure if we get spells from FE or SMT. Maybe spells from SMT and weapons from FE?

That's also kind of what I've been thinking. Not in such a grand way, but I can't help but think of how they subverted expectations between Persona 5's reveal and the gameplay trailer.

If this trailer was shown and it was introduced as "Persona 5" instead of what we got two months ago, the storm would be much larger than it is now.

I actually think people would be a lot more hyped for it if it was Persona 5. Its not much different from other recent Persona game trailers... hell the first English Persona 4 trailer started with boob shots of Rise and Yukiko. People go into Persona games knowing they are high school dating sim + dungeon crawling RPG so none of this stuff would be so out of place... people just had a different expectation here.

Nope. I absolutely believe that if this was how Persona 5 was presented, the outrage would be way more out of control and the overall reception way more soured. Were you following the reactions during the Persona event of November 24, 2013? Things went nuts before the words "Persona 5" appeared on a screen.

That's actually from Devil Survivor 2 and 1, and it's the same team handling this game apparently.

DS1, in spite of the bright "Anime" character design, actually had a storyline very close to mainline SMT. In fact, storywise, DS1 is probably the closest thing to a modernized SMT 1.

DS2 had a storyline with a main premise similar to Nocturne or Strange Journey in some ways, but it focused much more on light hearted character interactions, leading to a very different overall atmosphere, in spite of the events happening there.

DS1 and 2 had different script writers though, so I guess the writer here would tell a lot about the direction they're taking this game.

Hey if Gerrald wasn't my avatar I would probably use the gal from Shigatsu.

Yeah, I remember when people lost their shit when Persona Q was announced and they thought the whole event was just for that.

My biggest issue with this game isn't that I don't think this will be good. But because it was false advertising to an insane degree.

If someone told me Intelligence Systems and Atlus were working together on a new game, I'd be far more receptive of this.

But this was billed as SMT x FE. The teaser was just listing off FE and SMT characters. They even used Tamaki for gods sake.

That's just a level of disingenuous behavior that hurts

I've seen you a lot in RPG thread so I'm legit surprised when I see this. You should try SMT games mainline or spinoffs games.

One day! It's just a matter of backing the right console for once.

And as much as I dislike handhelds, all the RPG love the 3DS gets makes it mighty tempting sometimes...

It couls be worse considering P4D reception.

It's cool man. That mean you have broad taste and that is a good thing

it's the first trailer lol
We'll got more down the line, no need to worry

Yeah, I remember when people lost their shit when Persona Q was announced and they thought the whole event was just for that.

I don't see how thats really relevant. I was upset at first seeing Persona turned into little chibi characters... but we're talking about using a normal anime artstyle with high school and Tokyo themes here. Its pretty much a setting that wouldn't feel outlandish for a Persona game unlike Persona Q or Persona Dancing.

It was a thrown together trailer with no explicit promises made.

People love to wildly speculate when given very little, but they rarely acknowledge that's what they're doing. "Disingenuous behavior"? Please.

That wouldn't surprise me. I think the reason why the SMT spinoffs have become way more prevalent than the main series is the larger overall appeal that wacky high school kids having crazy adventures has over borderline depressing post-apocalyptic moral debates.
