Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

After thinking about it more I don't really have a problem with the game itself (well, except for the jpop/idol/pandering bullshit). My issue stems from how shocked I was.

When this was announce I was beyond hyped. My two favorite RPG series coming together?! What could possibly go wrong? (famous last words, I know). Over the past 2 years this was my most anticipated title. I never lost hope since it was consistently mentioned in those investor meeting schedules and over time I built up expectations of what this would be.

I don't think I've ever had the rug pulled from under me that fast before. I went in expecting an SMT x FE but we really just got Atlus x Atlus. Any resemblance to either series is superficial at best (at least in this footage we have so far, I'll be glad to be proven wrong once we get more info).

I guess my shock has colored my perception of this as I'm sure it'll be a fine game, but the sting of losing a real SMT x FE hurts.

Honestly I'm glad it became its own thing instead of just mashing characters from both series. This has the potential to become a brand new RPG franchise for Nintendo and yeah the anime stuff is gotta take time to get used to but I think it will be an amazing game in the end of it.

This is pretty much my view of it. I'm all for Nintendo trying something like this. Combat looks interesting so far, too.

It ultimately doesn't matter if the gameplay is similar to dating sims because by definition for a game to be a dating sim the primary goal has to be dating, which is not the case in Persona.

Let's cut to the chase though - despite it all being optional, a majority of the fan base still goes after the romantic stuff. Otherwise all the waifu war bullshit wouldn't be nearly as strong. There definitely is an appeal there.

I really am debating if I should post an analysis thread, if folks would only pay attention, there is so much FE in here its pretty blatant. While the SMN or Megaten does seem like mostly the modern/post apocalypse Tokyo and aesthetic. But really, the amount of virtrol and ignorance in this thread from supposed "fans" of both of the series is absolutely amazing.

As long as the analysis is coherent and well put together with images to show comparisons as well, I'd be down for that :)

I just don't get who this is supposed to please. I don't recall Fire Emblem or even Persona having that much fanservice, so why take it in that direction? Am I missing some obvious connection outside of Fire Emblem costumes?

Except its more like a harem simulator in 4 where you can date all the girls and everyone is cool with it

Yeah, this is true. However, the discussion stemmed from the hypothetical scenario of, "What if this was Persona 5?" I personally find it hard to imagine the fanbase would be just fine with it and that the reactions wouldn't be a lot more negative than we're seeing now, especially considering a lot of them would have been waiting and anticipating for 7 years to see it.

I posted this earlier, but look at the icons next to the character portraits on the side? The guy Tsurugi? Is a Lord. Tsubasa, the bluehaired girl has a Pegasus Knight Icon. The blonde, is an Archer. Plus again, one of the screens, Elthunder is clearly being cast.

There's not that much fanservice at all. I think there's 2 female characters in somewhat skimpy outfits (the black one was the only blatantly bad one) and absolutely 0 intentional breast/panty shots that I found.

The one scene with the swimsuit seemed odd but I have a feeling it won't be that bad in context based on the other characters reactions.

Don't worry if the game is T NoA will censor it anyways, anime cutscenes and panty shots removed or with longer clothes, shirtless guy censored too.

So... classes?

There icons in battle that imply FE classes.

edit: nvm beaten.

It's likely going to be rated M.

Pretty much, yeah.

This looks to be the closest we'll get to the notion of a "Fire Emblem in modern times" that one of the series leads talked about, and I, for one, am definitely interested.

About the only thing that I'm disappointed about is no apparent Kaneko. I wonder where Kaneko is, anyway.
Doing designs for DMC5, I hope and wish?

That'd be really interesting, and the kind of subversion I've been referring to. All this happy-go-lucky, idol and high school stuff is a facade, while what their world truly is, is this:

Not sure if that's what they're setting up, but something like it would be compelling.

Yeah it would. I mean it would hardly be the first Megaten game to start out somewhat normal before everything goes to complete hell. That is if this really even is a Megaten game anyway, not sure how that works in this situation. I'm not expecting Demifiend and Marth to shake hands or anything like that though.

There's also a precedent for this kind of setup in Fire Emblem games. Most of them start out peaceful but then your country ends up being invaded/overrun by some warmongering something or other and there's typically a supernatural twist thrown in on top of it like ancient zombie armies or cursed creatures.

This blew those ideas out of the water. I didn't want SMT shoehorned into Fire Emblem or vice versa, this seems like a completely new thing using elements of both games (FE characters, possible SMT setting). Way better than doing a Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright type of thing.

My big disappointment with this direction, overall, even if the game turns out to be good in the end, is that I was really looking forward to SMT's past protagonists being handled as non-silent characters with personalities of their own. It'd be interesting to see how they'd handle that for once, but this direction pretty much means that won't happen.

I don't get why Atlus never features past heroes aside from the Persona 3/4 crew. They even seem to ignore it as DLC in SMTIV and DeSu2, even though it'd likely be more appealing than the random stuff they offered.

Looks pretty great. It's a shame the initial announcement has effected peoples reception of it. Atlus have rarely let me down and this game has good pedigree. Excited.

Atlus tends to be a pretty competent developer. I have faith the game is going to be pretty cool, kinda pointless to try and draw conclusions from 1 trailer, I highly doubt they're going to show their hand so early on. I'm looking forward to it!

Creator of Devil Survivor making this right? I absolutely loved the first game. Really really looking forward to this game, which I'm regarding as Atlus' take on the fire emblem series i guess? Like FE but in a high school setting? I have no idea what's going on, but I'm still really excited.

Like those "Tales of" crossovers? Yeah no, I prefer this direction of new game taking elements from both worlds.

$$$. Have to maximize those profits.

Wait, I just realized, that crowd, are they human? it's incredibly blurred but it looks like that crowd are a bunch of monsters.

If this was from the director of devil survivor i think we can still get the feel of fire emeblem in this game, with the dungeons be like tactics style then when battle starts it will be the usual turn base we get on smt. i recommend you guys play devil survivor and you'll know what im saying. and its a great game dont worry ^.^.

We are somehow getting a bunch of past FE characters in odd forms though. It's just the SMT connections that seem to be only thematic/general design so far.

I don't think you got what I mentioned there. SMTIV and DeSu2 don't have Persona characters, or any other past characters. Their DLC is just a bunch of grinding or random boss battles or demons. I just don't see why they seem to think that past characters would be less appealing than that stuff.

Awakening's first batch of DLC only sold well due to the ties to past games. They're very barebones from an actual mechanics point of view. And yet that first batch still sold well enough to lead to that second batch with better actual content. I don't get why Atlus doesn't use an approach like that.

lol this looks nothing like SMT or Fire Emblem. Not the gameplay, not the art direction, not the tone -- NOTHING.

Not that I mind, really! I just wonder why they billed this as a crossover of the two series, because it feels like they just went ahead and made an entirely new thing and are now stuck having to justify this.

Honestly, I might be more interested now since I tend to be wary about crossovers and I trust IS and Atlus to make a good game.

Aside from the main cast, I don't think anyone is really human. In town, and even in the cut scenes, all the people are only shown to be silhouettes. Although it could just be a stylistic approach.

There is Majin Tensei, if you're willing to burrow into the old games. There are many things about that short subseries, especially with Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis, that seem like an almost perfect fusion of what mainline Megaten's become and permadeath-riffic Fire Emblem. Including what I've been spoiled of the extremely difficult neutral ending.

The options for playing those games in english are pretty, uh, not so great now, but I have faith it'll get better in time.

Devil Survivor's easier to acquire in the meantime, and probably closer to what #FE will eventually shape up as. Though I really do expect #FE to be more its own thing and almost impossible to predict what it will become, with what little we know right now.

If you consider the way Fire Emblem characters do make an appearance it's actually way more interesting than a simple "Oh well we took FE and made the Demifiend playable!"-style crossover. I understand people's initial "Huh?" reaction but, at least to me, the reveal made the game more interesting. Not that I wasn't hyped before that, mind you.

easy! because we all here have played the game and know 100% of it already. even after the developers first interview stated to stay tune on how this game connects to Fire Emblem in future updates.but you know once again people throw things out of proportion

As a big fan of DeSu over SMT or Persona (yes, yes, I am weird but screw you Psyduck is the best character ever), I cannot trust the tone of the trailer. DeSu games always start off "normal" for all of five minutes before: (a.) you die, (b.) aliens invade, (c.) demons invade riding on aliens, (d.) the world blows up because demon riding aliens nuked it, etc.

There is some sort of faux to the set-up as is presented, its too happy with interspliced scenes that look like they came out of FSN:UBW or Nocturne. Also, suspiciously, if you look at the a lot of the shots, they are all introductory. The characters are all in "normal life mode" for the majority of the trailer, the super-power magical girl power-up comes as a shock to the guys, and so on.

I suspect we're going to see something like: characters are initially actors/entertainers in a game -> game starts to seep into reality -> reality gets warped -> nuke Japan -> game starts in earnest.

Can't be a SMT related game without nuking Japan after all! ;P

I think we can safely assume this game isn't suddenly going to change art style between now and when it comes out or suddenly transform into a top-down perspective turnbased SRPG.

Which, again, is totally fine by me!

Hell, even the SMT games are similar in that regard. SMT I puts you in Tokyo for the first few hours before everything gets nuked to hell.
