You might remember the Ars Technica article about the most popular Steam titles in 2014.
A new site, SteamSpy(still in Alpha), uses a similar technique, and you can look up the statistics of most games currently on Steam, with statistics up-to-date(as possible)
Explanation about the algorythm and the limitations
You can search by Publisher, Year, Genres and even check specific Country stats.
Lots of interesting data here( like Valkyria Chronicles being >250 000, Skylines at >850 000, Pillars of Eternity at >200 000 or Skyrim being over 8 million.
Mind that the data is not entirely accurate, doesn't count games owned by profiles set to private, and the games that were recently featured on Free Weekends will have skewed numbers in result of that(there will be warning on the game page if it was recently featured on one). However, in most cases it will be a estimation close to the actual numbers.
Comparison with Official Sales data released by devs/publishers (thanks to Saty for compiling this)

They're close enough that I'm liking this site.![]()
Just a quick note on my own personal game...the sales data I have and the owners data on the site is off by about ~20k, which is the margin of error that was given. So that's pretty accurate.
The weekly new owners thing is WILDLY inaccurate though. Not even close for my game.(Edit: actually those are very accurate, forgot about the Steam activations via Humble.)
Awesome site though!
