I don't really think the term 'dating sim' is all that dismissive. It's just a phrase to me that describes something where you date someone. For me personally, I'm not trying to write off Persona or any game where you date other people, it's just a matter of fact that you date people in the game at some point.
As for this game in particular, I wonder if they'll be implementing mechanics like that. (and how it affects "idols")
You don't have to and can just shun everyone like in some visual novels. (dat Katawa Shoujo route) But for the most part, I think that YES, players will be dating someone in Persona or some other game that has similar mechanics whether they are aware of it or not.
It is not SMTxFE anymore. Rather, it was never known as that begin with, since it was a tentative title to describe the project that became Genei Ibunroku #FE.
In Japanese it's 幻影異聞録#FE (pronounced genei ibunroku sharp F-E), which is being translated as Illusory Revelations #FE. The project is still being officially referred to as a Shin Megami Tensei & Fire Emblem collaboration in the West.
Edit: Although it's probably already been noted multiple times, but the original Persona game was known as 女神異聞録ペルソナor Megami Ibunroku Persona.

You don't get it. You can get to level 10 in the Social Links with every single character in Persona 4 without ever having to romantically date anyone.
Hell of a dating sim, huh? People who label the series that way, as though it's its defining feature, need to gain some perspective.
I'm sure Jeff and Vinny from Giant Bomb are massive dating sim fans. That's why they love Persona 4 so much.
How about this: You're wrong. You know which the biggest selling, single Persona release in the series is in Japan?
Persona 1. Fancy that, that game didn't have any life sim (or, as so many people like to refer to, dating sim) elements at all. And then two Persona games followed that, again, lacking Social Links. Persona 4 Arena, Persona Q, Persona 4 Dancing? None of those games have dating, and the former two were very successful in terms of what they were.
I know it's hard to accept for people who like to peddle this fallacious "Persona is a dating sim" argument, but, guess what? It's actually a successful brand due to its other merits. Dating and "waitfus" lend to the modern series success, but they are not the predominant reason for it so many seemingly want to believe it is. Stop trying to dismiss the work of the clearly talented people behind the games.

I always thought when people called Persona (3&4) a dating sim, they were saying it as a joke because of all the waifu war stuff that happens. I didn't realise people actually believed it.
They're more of a hybrid of visual novel mechanics during the daily sequences with RPG elements through the dungeon crawling. Calling it a dating simulator is a bit short sighted when even if you "date" someone, that only comes into play in 2/3 scenes in the entire game.
Why is this even a discussion in an SMTxFE topic again? Persona is pretty popular and all, but the only thing that remotely looks Personaish in the trailer was the fact they're in highschool and we see some 2D anime cutscenes. Half the mainline SMT protagonists are/were high schoolers (SMT:1, 3, if), half the general Megami Tensei series protagonists are even high school students.
The idol motif is fairly different and new. P4 may have had an idol character (and soon an idol dancing spin off game) but this is the first time that it has been a main motif
if this one single trailer is to be believed.
The animeish style? I guess that seeing as it is less Kaneko and more "not-Kaneko" that people are seeing it as a more anime styled game. Kaneko's games are pretty anime in design, but it is stylized so I can see the compliant of "it looks too anime" because it is a less Kaneko stylized version.
I can just see this game being straight up an RPG and not have any of the visual novel elements from the P3&4 games.
I'm suspected that the main characters are your average joe SMT RPG character who gain the ability to summon FE-like abilities. Sorta reminds me of Digital Devil Saga.
Actually it being called a Shin Megami Tensei & Fire Emblem collaboration here could be because of how associated the SMT name is with the franchise? All the games other here (except Persona 4 Golden onwards) have had the SMT name attached to the title. I wouldn't be surprised if when it comes out in the west that the game is called SMT something something Fire Emblem.
I hope I just haven't repeated what other people have already said...
I think people (including myself) are judging this game way too much based on the first trailer.
I'm surprised that this thread has gone on that long actually
If they do go with Shin Megami Tensei: Hashtag FE, I wonder if people will flip their lids. Perhaps they wanted to gauge reaction to the trailer and then figure out what to do from there if they haven't titled anything yet? Fire Emblem also seems to be just "FE" for now on 3DS in NA so maybe they just haven't thought of anything for the time being.
And as far as the idol thing goes with this game, it's present in the battles so far so it's for sure a major focus unless somehow we only saw one idol-centric arena. (but then again there's the way the battle UI is set up and so on...)
I know social link is more than waifus, but waifus or "make friends with girls" in social link is what draws in the popularity, just look at P4 discussion... anywhere. I played Persona since the original. Girls in Persona 4 (and the "hip" style) sells the game more than its gameplay. Period.
What do people think of the 2D animated scenes and 3D cg scenes shown in the trailer? I sort of assumed the 2D animated scenes were just pulled from what will end up being the game's opening and that the game will utiize the cg style cutscenes throughout the game. Does anyone think both kinds will be used throughout the game?

The 3D CG appears to be from the same studio that did the ones in Awakening and Fire Emblem if so they are going to be amazing... the 2D ones look very Persona tbh
My guess is that they will use a mix, like they could use 2D in the real world in 3D in the "fantasy world"
It looks like a bigger budget HD game from the Devil Survivor Team to me. I bet it is because of Nintendo involvement that it was even possible for that team to have the budget to make an HD console game. More console games from Atlus is fine so I am happy despite the huge fanservice vibe. And hopefully SMT5 for home consoles is also on the way.

Yep, they were definitely FEA and FEif style 3D cutscenes. The thought of using both has me curious as to when they decide to use which ones throughout the game considering they are both pre-rendered and not in-game.
I'm still feeling like the 2D animated ones will just be part of an opening for the game and the actual pre-rendered cutscenes throughout the game will be the FEA/if style ones.
Does this game look great, or does it just look great!?
I were pleasantly surprised with the footage in this Direct. I love the art, anime, cutscenes, of what we can see of the mechanics. I weren't super excited about the announcement back in 2013, only because I have never played a Shin Megami Tensei or a Fire Emblem title but this one looks a little bit of Persona, and I love Persona.

Exactly. I know that kind of stuff appeals to a vocal otaku demographic and brings out waifu wars which kill any and all discussion most of the time so I'm happy we're cracking down on that. But the rest of the people that like Persona like it for more than that, just like there were people that loved Fire Emblem Awakening as their first Fire Emblem. Is Fire Emblem a dating sim and so that's the only reason people like it? I don't believe so. That did bring in some people, but a lot of others were drawn to the game because of the big marketing push, reviews, casual mode and more.
Saying that either Fire Emblem Awakening or Persona boils down to a dating sim is like saying:
Mass Effect, Yakuza and Catherine are dating sims.
Even though they're actually an epic space opera RPG, a great brawler open-world game and a nice puzzle game with a great, batshit insane story.
And so even if this trailer does seem to pander way too much to a crowd I'm not part of, I'm sure in the end it won't be all there is to it.

But, is this game a dating sim at all?
For all we know that could be a small part of it, not that first impressions aren't important, but there could be more to it.

uh, i don't even remember seeing 3D CG cutscenes on the trailer
I think the more I watch the trailer, the more excited I'm getting to see more of this. Hopefully we see it again at E3, if not then probably TGS. Hopefully it's an early release next year or something and that they translate it pretty quickly like they did with SMTIV.
Also can everyone please stop talking about Persona. This game isn't Persona, who cares. If you want to play Persona, go play Persona. It's annoying that this topic has pretty much become Persona arguments. It's kinda off-topic

The CG is so good that people mistaking it for a 2D animation. Couldn't blame them though, that CG studio really have the skill to make CG animation moves and looks traditional animation if they wished it to.

I really hope Nintendo does the localizing job from the start. If its Atlus themselves, that's a pretty bad news for European folks lol

I wish we could get another setting like Strange Journey again, the atmosphere in that game was incredible. Really loved the dungeons in that game too.
Eh, SMT1 and IF star high school students (also Devil Survivor 1 and 2), but you don't actually go to class there, while here we got a scene of students in class. Although I guess it's likely just a cutscene rather than a recurring element like in Persona 3/4.

But that's my point, that I doubt this is all there is to it. That even if it does seem to pander to that crowd more than the 5 games I listed, that like those games there will likely be much more to it than meets the eye and the focus of the trailer could be misleading.
That's why I said so far. I doubt we'll get a lot of SMT vibes from this in the end, though. Sure, there will be some themes present, but the project seems to be disassociating itself with SMT and is basically it's own thing with FE mixed in. I guess we'll find out more later this year.
Although it has some influences, it's clearly a different game altogether.
Besides it's only the first trailer and might I add a very bad one. Bad in the sense it tells almost nothing about the game. First impressions are key. Rewatching the video made a better impression.
If their objective was to baffle everybody, they most definitely succeeded. Otherwise it's a fail in my book, regardless of how much I look forward to this game.

I've never played FE so I may be wrong but, there were like zero FE characters right? There sure as hell weren't any SMT demons. I was expecting something like Devil Survivor with FE characters.

Tiki's presence in that trailer is blatant. Furthermore, there are a bunch of other Fire Emblem characters who appear in distorted ways such as Gangrel and the one who looks like Chrom, wielding a Falchion. Then there's the fact that the main cast kind of seem like they relate to Fire Emblem characters, in some way by how they look. Fire Emblem vibes are rather prominent.
Not sure what to think of it. I was expecting FE gameplay with SMT characters so I'm pleased that it looks like it's going to play more like a traditional turn-based RPG (I'm not a fan of FE's gameplay style). On the other hand, thematically, it looks like a lower budget Persona knock-off which is funny seeing as how it's the same company behind both games. But seriously, watch the Persona 5 trailer & then the SMTxFE trailer and it's shocking how big of a gap in quality there are between the two.

"Genei Ibunroku" is basically the SMT part of the title ("Megami Ibunroku" was used for Persona 1 and Devil Survivor 1 in Japan and this seems to be a reference to that). They can't just cut the FE part. Either way, the translation in the topic's title isn't official, right now it's still being called "Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem" in English.
