Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

Actually, looking at this again, I think this supports the idea that something will happen to Tokyo. Those portal-like ovals are all over that final 2D cinematic in the trailer. They seem attached to buildings and make the glow. There's also the demons that appear in the crowd during the battles as well. I think this supports the "Devil Survivor" scenario of a calm beginning until all hell literally breaks loose.

Uhh....a small nitpick, but that's actually 3D CG.
Even everyone's grimdark favorite Nocturne stars high school students.
And Hitoshura just wear short pants everywhere ffs

Well naming sense was never a strong point in FE and SMT games.

Releasing FE7 as just Fire Emblem still haunts me.

I can understand dropping/not mentioning the 7 (as no FE games really mention their numbers), but it should have still had Blazing Sword as a subtitle.

True, but you get the idea. There are hints that there is more going on than what we were shown. The monsters that crowd the arenas are another example.

Even everyone's grimdark favorite Nocturne stars high school students.

To be fair, though, Nocturne's trailer evokes a very different tone than this does and pays no attention to the regular lives of the main cast. The level of education seemed quite irrelevant to the story. Of course, I can't tell how important it will be in this game but it's definitely more prominent in the trailer.

As a side note, man does the Nocturne trailer get me hyped up again.

And Hitoshura just wear short pants everywhere ffs

He's the Demifiend, lol. He doesn't need to give a fuck.

It's the name of the song that is playing in the trailer btw. :D

I think we'll probably get a huge character song album from this. >_>

Some of the other songs -
no.2 - VAMPIRE
no.3 - Gachinko Rider [?], Do Your Best Rider?
no.4 - ?? (KIKIN) ????
no.5 - Brush-Up
Wait really? How do you know that? I'm completely in love with the song, so knowing its name is a good first step!

Love how that trailer was like half Dante

I wonder if it actually helped it sell in U.S.

I love Devil May Cry to death but I'd actually prefer the version with Raidou Kuzunoha instead of Dante. Although Dante is fine too. It's probably one of the most fitting cameos I've seen considering Dante's a demon hunter.

Illusory Revelations#FE: Featuring Shulk from the Super Smash Bros. Series!

On a more serious note, if the Devil Survivor team is developing the game, then I definitely think there's a chance most of what they're showing is early in the story with everything going to hell later on.

SMT Nocturne had Dante, I wonder if Atlus/Nintendo would be up for SMT x FE having a Bayonetta cameo.

That'd be hilarious. It'd only be complete if the boxart had a sticking saying 'features Bayonetta from the Bayonetta series' on it.

I'd rather they didn't, but I'd chuckle.

Would be totally out of place.

Besides Bayonetta is not nearly as populair
They can make her suit the art style, Bayonetta has been animated so that t wouldn't be too much, she is also a witch who hunts angels and gods and even demons if need be.

Doesn't Atlus label most of their re-arrangements as "Reincarnation"?

There's a P4 remix album with that title.

That's neither here nor there though. "Reincarnation" is most likely a reference to an element of the story here: FE characters reincarnated as pop stars.

This game sounds more awesome by the days. Starting to evoke The Wicked + The Divine.

Man this sounds like FF.net fanfic title.

Well its an Atlus (smt) RPG, I am almost guaranteed to end up liking whatever the final overall product is.
Is FE characters being reincarnated as popstars really something you'd see on fanfic.net? That seems entirely something that would be made in a place like japan where it wouldn't be this nomad media.

Nintendo and Atlus games are usually fine I think. Whenever I think of weird names I think more of Square Enix or something.

Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena and Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold would like a word with you.

I like those names, tho. Gen'ei Ibunroku #FE / Illusory Revelations #FE is fine with me, too.

Oh hey, this looks really cool.

Looks more akin to Persona than SMT though.

Persona itself comes off as fanfic. I don't particularly mean that in a bad way or anything. So if anyone can get behind Persona I don't see how this would be a problem.

It's not a crazy idea for the west by any stretch of the imagination either. The comic I referenced in my post - The Wicked + The Divine - uses the same idea. Greek gods are reborn as modern pop stars. And that's written by two British guys.

At its most basic level it's a commentary on idol worship. They're really not doing anything that crazy here.

Well yeah, if out of nowhere someone just said "Hey I had a fantastic idea, let's make a FE emblem game where the characters are reborn as pop stars!" I would just give a flat what.

It only seems to make sense in the context of this crossover.

Ah, thanks, put in that way it makes the comment about it being fan fiction seem even weirder, especially when your of the opinion that the only thing different from fan fiction and professional stories is one of them has a publisher.

Hahaha, yes! I just made this point to someone last month. There really is no difference.

The greek good comparison its not quite the same, mythology gods are always being interpreted differently through the times.

Fanfiction doesn't even have to be bad. But my point is that it just seems like a really weird concept to begin with.

I think I'm warming up to this game the more times I view this trailer. I need to see more before I come to any conclusion but I think this should have been a new IP.

I'm not sure what you mean, really. People always riff on the Greek mythos, so... ?

Atlus always incorporates figures from a multitude of mythologies in SMT. What they seem to have done here is switch out the mythological figures with FE characters; FE treated as its own pantheon. Reinterpreted.

I mean, it is quite literally the same.

Did you say that? I missed that. Thought you were just banging on about it being "weird".

If it makes sense in the context of the game it's in, that's all that really matters, no?

I said it here:

It only seems to make sense in the context of this crossover.

Also a concept can make sense, but that doesn't meant it wouldn't be weird either. I mean I would have NEVER imagined a Samurai Warriors/Nobunaga's Ambition x Pokemon crossover, the concept is weird, yet makes sense, and was done well.

I was just saying that sentence would be like something you'd see in FF.NET and then we just started discussing it.

Probably, but in this case they say the words "Reincarnation, realization" in the chorus. Would be odd if that wasn't the song in question, lol.

And "FE characters being reborn as pop stars" definitely sounds FF.net-ish. I am sure this same thing was brought up when FFX-2 was revealed though probably to a lesser degree...? (Or not because FF)

Hm... This is obviously speculation, but I've rewatched the trailer and noticed a few things I hadn't before. This girl in red seems to be the one who summons "Aversa". She seems to be doing it in the city, under open skies.

The end of the trailer shows the blue haired girl confronting Aversa in the city too. However, her in game battle scene shown earlier in the video is in that stage-like place seen in all gameplay battles in the video.

I wonder if every battle actually takes place in those environments automatically, doesn't matter where they are in the story? There are a few variations of those stages shown in the trailer too, like one that seems to have an ancient theme to it.

The ending of the video, when the blue haired girl confronts Aversa, seems to show many of those shinning circles, similar to the one bellow Aversa while she appears, all around the city.

If those circles are bringing more monsters like Aversa, could that be what leads to this?

Something odd too is that while I get why the go with colored silhouettes for unimportant background characters (and it does look cool) why would they do it in the animated cutscenes? I mean the same principle applies, you make something look more filled with people with less effort, but its weird on high school cutscene where the colored silhouettes are way too close to the screen to not be detailed.

Wonder something to do with the illusion in the title?

The girl in red seems very SMT to me, visually.

Probably not pertaining to the title, but I'm sure there is an in-game reason somewhere.

It's not even consistent too. We see the students as silhouettes, but the stage group is drawn. On the other hand, in the scenes showing the heroes walking around in that place with posters of idols, there are background characters with fully detailed textures. It might be just an indication of people who can talk and people who are just background scenario though, and the animated cutscenes carry them over just for stylistic consistency.

The girl in red seems very SMT to me, visually.

She (or at least someone identical to her aside from hair color) also shows up in an earlier scene. In spite of the odd background, I think it might be part of the same sequence, considering the building in front of her, that also pops up in the final scene of the video.

In the video, those scenes with her also seem to be directly opposed with Tiki's shots. Both of their back shots and then their shots from the front are pretty close together (although there's also an eyepatch girl between them in the 2nd set), and those are basically the only time both feature in the trailer.

I think the school day stuff is definitely a ruse. They might be in school at the beginning, but I strongly doubt this is going to have any persona style stuff. I think shit will go down and tokyo will get completely wrecked.

Also, looking at the battle screens, I don't think the people in the "audience" are actually humans. Some of them look weird. They could be spirits. It could be that you're kind of like a pop idol group for the dead/demons.

Not sure what to think of it. I was expecting FE gameplay with SMT characters so I'm pleased that it looks like it's going to play more like a traditional turn-based RPG (I'm not a fan of FE's gameplay style). On the other hand, thematically, it looks like a lower budget Persona knock-off which is funny seeing as how it's the same company behind both games. But seriously, watch the Persona 5 trailer & then the SMTxFE trailer and it's shocking how big of a gap in quality there are between the two.
The first thing I thought isn't that this was lower budget than persona 5, in fact it looks about on par or more than P5

Yeah, a couple posts have pointed out they're allclowns and zombies or something; monsters.

Probably.

It just feels weird to use this trick when the characters are this close to the screen.

So still unsure if its an stylistic choice, or something to do with the story.

That IGN analysis was fine, but there's way too much Persona talk in it.

I don't feel like a lot of the Persona comparisons that are being brought up for SMTxFE are warranted. A lot of them feel like a stretch. There are some obvious parallels such as the 2-world set-up, or the high school setting, but their transformations aren't anything like "Personas," and characters aren't referencing Persona.
Preach.

The popularity of Persona has been overshadowing anything to do with ATLUS. I get why, even, but it's extremely frustrating to have every single discussion link back to it with comparisons.

*something SMTIV Dark Souls of Persona something*
