Then died after a minute due to stupidity.

Don't be afraid to sacrifice health for extra bullets for parrying. If you have the rune that gives you more bullets from visceral attacks that'd help too. Try not to attack him when he's got his gun out because he will stun you. Dodge around him, not away, otherwise he will two-shot you with his gun.

I wasted a lot of ammo on this fight. Easily the hardest hunter fight in the game.

That's a bit sucky, there seems to be a glitch sometimes if you join someone's game who is in a boss cutscene. Couldn't use the fog gate at all even after they were clearly out of it. :I

I found that Rom chalice fight easier than the story version. Use those pillars as a shield when he starts nuking that shit from the sky.

If you soup up your Fire Resist, you can usually survive a hit and heal up.

Try to get a little in front of him and bait his chomp attack where he winds his head up to his right side and then bites in a semicircle in front of him. When he does, it's pretty easy to dash to his right side (your left) and get in a few hits. He'll usually do a charging dash across the arena after that, so be ready to move back a bit to avoid getting hit. Rinse, repeat. Once you get in the groove, you can pretty much follow this strategy for the entire fight.

If looking at the entrance of the Grand Cathedral, go left into what looks like a wooded area. I recommend there next.

What weapon are you using? I killed him on my second try really easily (first time around I got riposted because I got careless) with the kirk sword. I'd riposte him once and then wail on him when he got back up. It'd stun lock him and an 8 hit combo with the sword does a lot of damage. I only had to do that a bit more than twice before he died.
