The arcane scaling only works if you slot in a +X Arcane ATK gem onto the weapon. Once you do that, the weapon scales off arcane only, and Strength and Skill do not affect the damage.

I'm a souls newbie, and I just finished this up today! I never requested help, or did any glitching, item duping etc. I did grind some though as I finished up at level 101 and around 65 hours. I had a blast. A few bosses were frustrating to figure out, but none were cheap. Just a matter of reading up, watching some videos and piecing together a strategy that worked for my build and my ability level (I rarely found one video that helped, just ended up piecing together bits and pieces and/or trying new weapons or tactics on my own).
I mostly just used the saw cleaver and ludwig's sword combo. The bosses that were particularly hard for me were
Cleric Beast, Father G, Rom, Paarl, Ebietras, Amygadala, Gehrman.
The rest were easy and didn't take more than 3 or 4 tries, with several first attempts--including the real final boss.
So now on to dick around in the chalice dungeons and see if the platinum seems doable for me. The boss trophy is the only one that will be tough. Only other two are just needing a weapon from there to complete my collection, and a level 15+ gem.
Anyway, color me impressed. I generally HATE hard games, but I loved this one. Fantastic gameplay, art design and atmosphere, and while it's hard as shit at times, its always fair and most bosses get "easy" once you figure out a strategy that works for you and get it down. I already bought the Dark Souls 2 remaster, and look forward to digging into that.
The reason Cainhurst is on lockdown is because of the terrifying heasts outside the castle. Since the Knights of Cainhurst are pretty strong (even as weak old men), the beasts have to be even stronger to justify it, I think.
Just finished my blind NG run and only realized as NG+ loaded that I'd forgotten to tie up several loose ends, namely
Cainhurst and the Upper Cathedral
. Really not sure if I'll try NG+ to push through and tie these up or if I'll just start a fresh NG run with a different build. Either way...wow, what a game.
They must have been referring to the other BLB in which case backing off is a bad idea. It'll straight up swallow your camera.
There should have been enough ritual blood 4 in the dungeon you just did to open another one from those side rooms. Also stronger enemies like the bag men can drop them.
Arcane scaling only affects the weapon if it has a gem with Arcane/Fire/Bolt on it, or the weapon itself has some native element like the Tonitrus, which does benefit from Arcane scaling. You can test this and see for yourself. Arcane scaling does nothing if there is no elemental gem or native element on the weapon.

That's really stupid haha. Why even bother putting it on there in the first place then? I wonder if the rapier was originally unable to use fire paper like the other no-arcane scaling weapons.
is the first area in this game that's left me utterly confused when it comes to navigation, I have no idea how to progress even after unlocking the first shorcut...

Ludwig's sword is a quality weapon made for different types of builds. So in the case of an arcane build, one could purchase two Ludwigs, add a bolt or fire gem and have and wreck all types of things.
Is co-op notoriously glitchy or am I just having bad luck? I was helping people with Vicar Amelia on my lunch the other day via remote play (double lag - yay!) and the host got killed. I was left trapped in the boss room and had to quit out of the game to return to my own world
I'm half way through Forbidden Woods (up to the shortcut) and figured I'd ring my bell and help someone out while I got a feel for the rest of the level. We reached the boss and I died but when it loaded I was unexpectedly respawned into the boss room and died in seconds. I was then respawned into the boss room a 2nd time only now there was no HUD and they were all frozen. I smacked them a bunch with my sword and they died after only a few hits each and now I've ruined an entire boss :/ Looks like I'll have to head back through the forest and grab all the loot I missed!
Fun fact: Blades of Mercy only do Arcane damage when attacking out of a roll or sidestep, or from transformed R2/L2. You can tell because the weapon swing sounds different and you'll see a slight effect on the weapon. I think if you do long combo strings, the arcane might also proc? Still unsure about that last part.
Headless Abhorrent Bloodletting Beast is kicking my ass. Camera sucks so bad I can't see half the time. Not locking-on makes it even worse. It's really fucking annoying how co-op hardly ever works on these chalices. I just waited a fucking hour trying to summon someone and then another trying to get summoned to no avail. And yes, I have the chalice set to open.
Yeah I ran past them and went inside to encounter....Samurai Ghost Chicks. This game keeps delivering in spades. I reached the shortcut elevator and calling it quits for tonight. What a day.

I'm about to finish my new game+ and it seems I've only one path left that I don't know how to open. It's the door when you go left from Cathedral Ward, after the giant with the ball and chain.
I've captured the location in question with the door here. Surely someone have an idea ?

It's the door behind where you fight the Cleric Beast. Can't be opened for some reason, but just leads back to that boss fight area anyway so would just be a shortcut.
