Wow, the Titans Souls demo is really hard. I think having to run back to the boss after every death is going to get annoying

Earthtongue's "hungry fungus" update is out, features new bugs, new carnivorous fungus, should be easier, includes random (rare) meteor showers as well. Pretty cool update.

Apparently itchio's testing a desktop client--I'd actually love that if it can check for updates, really my biggest problem with itchio for now is knowing when stuff updates, that's why I redeem my steam keys ASAP.

My biggest annoyance with itch.io is their search format. You can't select multiple options, like if you wanted to see games under $5 and then narrow that down to only Top Sellers or Pixel Art

Got some early impressions of the OP games.

Beware The Space Bears
Totally not my kinda thing, but seemed fairly competent in build quality and it was fun to bop around in the world for a bit although I couldn't find a way to make myself last more then 3-4 fights without eating it

Chambara
Very cool concept, haven't had a chance to play multiplayer yet but just running around the maps is really nice looking.

Chester Unlimited
I sorta liked the first Chester game but this one totally didn't do it for me. The controls feel even floater then its predecessor and the level design is fairly simplistic. The gimmick is nice at the beginning and it has some fun graphic zoom in effects but that doesn't really save this platformer.

Chronoclysm
Rough menus and doesn't control great, but the strength of the concept shines through and I found myself rather charmed by this insane time traveling paradox arcade hack'n'slash game. Definitely worth a go if you can rope a mate in and god have mercy on you if you can get it in four player mode.

Cluster
The combination of feeling a little too much like success and failier were out of my control with the rather boring early start mean that this high-score game really pales in comparison to any game it might be imitating (not that I am accusing it of anything of the sort).

Yeah, discovery is a huge problem for stores these days, wish they had a nice robust system to deal with that. Honestly I mostly expect to see games outside itchio rather than by searching/browsing, or I just look down the front page or press lists (which are also kind of a mess but eh it's not like 99% of users ever see it)

I've all but given up on actually finding games through storefronts these days. I just hope interesting stuff will surface via social or press channels.

I do love their gif thumbnails though, for some games it's a really great way to show what the game is about in minimal time/space.

My Quick Look on Hero Generations:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjjdHXUshP4

KWb1LA1.gif

Quick Impressions: The game bills itself as a 4x Strategy Roguelike RPG, with the enticing McGuffin being that each turn is one (1) year of time that has passed. It's an interesting mechanic when applied against average human life expectancy. There is always an urgency regarding your movement and what you set out to accomplish before going to the nearest town to have your next offspring.

The end goal of the game centers around how much fame (any particular generation) you've attained during their particular life-cycle. More or less, fame is your score and you're trying to get a high score, which are reflected against a leaderboard on the main menu.

These are the basics to the game, which fosters a very tight play-cycle on any particular generation lasting around three (3) minutes on average. There are methods to increase your life expectancy (which requires either time or luck) but the steady beat of time and unlucky battles widdles away what little life you have.

The game is very easy to pick up and learn with only a (optional) five minute tutorial to get you up to speed. Animations are crude but get the job done. Scaling up the game window to accommodate your display actually works against the game, especially during the battle sequences which can make the game (visually) seem not fully baked.

All told, Hero Generations is like witnessing a machine in action. All of the cogs and pieces have a purpose and fit together perfectly. But, at least for me, it never went further than a cold, calculated strategy machine and never really addressed the powerful metaphor of how our lives are short-lived.

My Quick Look on Don't Shoot Yourself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kMiXZmZCds

Fi7ERom.gif

Quick Impressions:

You move your ship around in a confined space with your mouse. Moving fires bullets. If you stop moving, you will reload your bullets. You need to keep moving, while avoiding your bullets from hitting yourself. Hence the title of the game.

I really enjoy tiny games like this where the very core of the game design practically writes the rest of how the game should be developed. Self-evident game design.

My Quick Look on Westerado: Double Barreled:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZp400oB9M

46EukNF.gif

Quick Impressions: Before I begin, I wasn't aware that this game was a browser game first, you can find it here: http://games.adultswim.com/westerado-action-online-game.html.

With that out of the way, boy howdy! This game is REALLY good. It has the general plot device that sets up the story, but what Westerado does that I was actually surprised at was how important all of the NPCs were to the story. You start off with a clue as to who killed your brother and mother. But it's not much of a clue at all, because it basically only solves 50% of the population (maybe).

But the interesting thing is that dialogue trees are not limited to just different dialogue options. You can have actions be your dialogue options. The actions are pretty limited, you could either walk away from a conversation, to which the NPC you were talking with might get upset or find it strange but it could also be a tactic. The other dialogue action you can take it pointing your gun towards the person you're having a conversation with. This gets them nervous as they try to cool the situation. You can FURTHER push this action by cocking the hammer of your gun back which puts additional pressure on the NPC to act. Sometimes they'll just drop whatever money they have and run. Others will make a funny comment that manages to reflect the situation. Super refreshing and well designed.

There is an excellent map system/quest log/hint log that keeps you updated with where you left off and is executed perfectly. I never found myself wanting for information in any particular way and the presentation is just fantastic.

Speaking of presentation, while some of the character pixel-art is bordering on Atari 2600, the environmental artwork is truly something to behold. I realize that it may not be everyone's cup-of-tea, but damn do I enjoy it.

Normally, I don't comment on music, but holy shit these guys nailed it. Not only is it authentic, it's scripted magnificently. At each and every turn that there could have been a musical embellishment to heighten what was happening on screen, it was there. Whoever was responsible for creating the music and scripting it against the game did a master level execution.

If you can't wait for the Steam release, give the browser version a try.

Recommended. Very Recommended.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I remember Patrick Klepek streaming an indie Secret of Mana-esque (2d hack and slash with RPG elements) game several month ago and being really impressed by the art. I thought it was Hero Siege, but I can't find find him ever mentioning that game, and I don't remember the stream having wave based progression.

Anyone know wtf game he was playing?

(sorry for bumping last month's thread)

Do you remember any other details? You mention Hero Siege, so was the game isometric/top down or 2D side-scrolling?

Secret of Grindea?

Yup! It was that same perspective with a similar color palette. I'm pretty sure he and Alex played it together online, I think it was up to 4-person multiplayer. I think the graphics may have had a more 16-bit aesthetic to it

I thought it was Hero Siege up until I just played it, but Hero Siege is arena wave-based game. The game he was playing definitely let you move between different screens/areas, and I think may have had towns as well.

Secret of Grindea?

That's the game! You're awesome!

Pillars of Eternity - After 45 hours I think I can write my impression about the game. So far I'm in the middle of the Act 2 on the region of Defiance Bay and I'm pretty much liking it so far, I think it's important to note that it's the first game I play in this genre (yeah I never played BG1, BG2, NWN, P:T etc) and it's a good game to get into the genre. The game isn't based on any existing scenario, instead it's an original world created by Obsidian and while the classes, races and status seem to remember D&D the developers did make it feel original.

One of the great point in the game is the writing, the companions you find during the adventure have interesting back stories and even the NPC's in the cities you find also are interesting, and as one expect from Obsidian the world isn't so guided by right and wrong, basically every faction has a positive and negative point, they aren't completely bad or good but each has their own interest.

Anybody playing Aaru's Awakening on PS4?

I loved the rugged, hand-drawn art style and animations, and the changing environments. It's like playing as a roided-up rooster who's finding his way through heavy metal album covers.

Sadly, everything else was less appealing. The jump, dash, and teleport mechanics are fun if you can chain them together fluidly, but doing so was a rarity since the controls a bit tough to grasp, and seem imprecise. That results in a lot of trial and error.

The game is short. Time trials to add replayability, but I can't see myself investing the time required to master the mechanics.

Regardless, fans of artsy platformers who don't mind a bit of adversity should at least give it a look. I'm glad I persevered just to see what it had to offer visually.

Also the game should have been narrated by Billy West, because every time I heard Aaru I thought of Richard Nixon's head.

Yeah I instantly felt the same about the controls(PC Version) - had intended to go back to see if it was just a case of getting used to them but looks like my first impressions were right.

Still going to give it a go but not expecting much from it

How short is short? I had been looking at it and wanted to check it out, and I might do that soon if it's only going to take a few hours.

Bad controls? From the look of it I kept meaning to check it out but never did. I'll at least give it a peek, I try to always give any PS+ game a quick test drive at the least.

Speaking of, Tower of Guns works surprisingly well on PS4. Pick a slower-firing weapon like the pizza-slicer and the analog stick aiming doesn't seem as bad, dodging is nicer. Still feels like you need eyes in the back of your head to dodge some stuff though.

Remembering - Free (PC, MAC)
CCLBAm7VIAE8X1G.jpg

http://www.rememberingthegame.com/

Remembering is a game that leaves room for the player. By building a world based on sound instead of visuals we've created a place that relies on interpretation. It offers the chance to perceive it in a personal way.

Couldn't find any screenshots so that's just concept art. Seems really cool, will have to try it out later and post some impressions.

Yeah it was a quick go though to be fair - i was kinda disappointed with it as i was looking forward to trying it out, but it was close to the end of the month and i had a few other games to try.

Just haven't went back to it yet....

I'm kinda torn between Vagante and Catacomb Kids in terms of a roguelike platformer.

Which should I go with right now? It looks like Catacomb Kids is a bit more complex and fun but also less feature complete right now.

Tough call, I prefer Catacomb Kids, but currently you get a bit more for your money content wise in Vagante. Personally, I would take CK over V (as its much more interesting to play for me), but I also dont mind playing a game for a while and picking it up 2 weeks later again.

I also wrote that in my impressions last month, the controls take some getting used to, but once they "click", it works very, very well.

Fun game.

I love both of those games. Vagante is way more lenient. CK seems to have the thousands-of-possibilities vibe that comes from Rogue games.

Looks like Midora is in trouble.

Midora is the kind of game that I have personally been dreaming about for years now. If you told me 5 years ago I would be working on such game, I would never believe you. The reason why Early Access has been delayed so much is simply because everything has changed. This is really hard to explain, especially when what you've seen so far doesn't even come close to what I have in mind for the game. I have a vision, and that vision keeps getting better and better. It also becomes clearer the more I work on the game with the team.

That vision takes a lot of time, and when I look at how much Midora has changed in just a year, I know for sure that we can beyond. I am not taking the game too far, I just want to create the perfect gem. It might sound insane to spend so much time perfecting everything or even starting over in some parts of the game, but that's just who I am, how I work, and I intend to make the best game possible. The story I began to write over 4 years ago is something that should be remembered, it deserves incredible action and gameplay, epic characters and battles, a fitting world with wondrous quests. I want Midora to be incredible in every way.

So why have we not enough money? Developers. By developers, I mean programmers and artists. We simply need more. We hired another amazing artist, Ian Schlaepfer, in September and thought we could achieve everything we aimed to do. We were unfortunately wrong. While most of the assets for Early Access have been roughly finished for some time now, we still do not have a satisfying demo.

It's the programmers fault, sure.

Little Devil Inside - PC?
b2299b9ce8325a35d3a04f72511f6d18_original.png

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ldi/little-devil-inside

Little Devil Inside is a truly engaging 3D action adventure RPG game where you are thrown into a surreal but somewhat familiar setting with humans, creatures and monsters to interact with, learn and hunt - journey, survive and discover the world that exists beyond.

That's one of the few images on the pitch - but I recommend watching the video. It looks super cute, very surreal and very interesting.

Aside from that I've been playing... Bloodborne, Pillars, Axiom verge, Tower of Guns, OlliOlli2. A crazy ass month for games, April/May looks quieter for me though - so more time spent on indies!

Oh - also Dirty Bomb!

Dirty Bomb - £14.99 (Early Access) (PC)

London is a post-apocalyptic wasteland with no law and no order, it's time to call in the mercenaries. Suit up and go toe-to-toe with other soldiers of fortune as you battle it out for riches and bragging rights. Work together or die alone in the most challenging team-based FPS.

There's a lot I like about DB in its current state, some stuff I'm not keen on that might get changed, and some stuff I don't like that's built into the game's systems. A couple of my friends are working on it so I was lucky enough to get a key. Super fast paced, a little confusing for new people and not a lot of communication as yet.

How lively is it? Dirty Bomb is one of a number of games that I might be into but I am always worried that they will be dead by the time they leave early access.

I haven't had many issues getting a game - and I think after EA it's going to be free to play with paid cosmetics? It has a kind of LoL rotation where certain mercs are free then they rotate out and are replaced.

Eh, I regret retweeting that. The campaign sets off a lot of warning bells for me. Best case scenario, it's just a poorly-prepared campaign. But I always remember that Confederate Express had a nice "gameplay trailer" too

Hm, a bit disappointed in both Aaru's Awakening and Never Alone. Never Alone seems like a great idea but the dissonance between the game and documentaries is too large and the game is way too simple but too hard at the same time after a couple chapters, it just feels frustrating. It feels like it wants to be Limbo or DKC, but it doesn't control as good as DKC, nor is it as well designed, and death isn't really as expected as it is in Limbo, it just breaks the pace. Should have focused more on weaving the documentaries into gameplay, they're the really interesting bits here but they're too dissonant from the actual gameplay.

Aaru seems like it could feel really masterful if you really learned the controls, but until you do they're really fiddly and the difficulty starts off fairly high. The ~2 second respawn time is surprisingly frustrating for a game like this, I would have also quit Super Meat Boy early if it were this slow, even if that doesn't sound slow out of context.

Please Don't Touch Anything was great, got stumped on a couple things though--anything asking me to play music notes will result in me looking up a guide...

Apologizes for the lack of activity here. Been busy, preparing for finals, etc. Havent had much time to play anything and haven't really been keeping track of releases

Will try to post a SS post tonight or tomorrow
