Atlus USA bringing Dungeon Travelers 2 to North America this summer

I think the massive amount of voice acting in games like TtT 2 and this make recording a dub too costly. I don't really care since I much prefer Japanese voice acting, but I know it must suck for people who like dubs since I've been in their shoes when games are dub only.

Yeah I can definitely understand their reasoning for not doing it since Tears to Tiara 2 had massive amount of texts. I like how the Neptunia games have partial dubs but since the text in these games are much longer I can understand how that wouldn't work too well since even a partial dub would require a lot more. Glad it's getting a physical release though!

I remember Parakeetman saying a lot of positive things about this game. Another Vita Dungeon Crawler I'm getting Day 1.
Fan-service or not I've loving the dungeon crawler localizations and it really brightened up my day seeing the news.

Its one of the better dungeon crawlers out there in my top 5 series wise, though there is fanservice so that will turn off a lot of users who are not interested in that. But the game has fantastic characters and voice work too. Plus lots of classes and skills to go through. End game content too.

An Atlus game that has japanese audio? Odd. Hope this doesn't set a precedent.

This game has a lot of VA work for them to re-record everything for a small niche market in the first place. That also includes all of the random chatter in the dungeons.

Doubt they would have been able to secure a budget to localize the title otherwise.

Im still surprised that they are doing this subtitled as wonder how they are going to handle whats said in battle / dungeons as those are audio cues. There were little design things with the game that had me pretty much convinced that it would have been a huge pain in the ass to localize the title due to not being able to properly localize those features unless they did a full English recording. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

It better be great or you will be branded a liar forever.

:D

But really, I love how the game looks and I can't wait to play it.

Not sure how many EO fans like fanservice and stuff, but the skill system where you need to put points into the various skills when leveling should have those familiar with EO amused. Since you pick what skills you want to advance. Then on top of that there are class trees for the characters.

I hope it does, Japanese VAs ftw.

Unless you mean the "only" part, then I understand.

I definitely mean the "only" part. I could care less if there's a choice.

Reminds me of Fate/Extra's translation and all the boss fights where the servants and masters would have back and forth character not having any subtitles despite the fact that it sounded like it was relevant to their tactics and the story.

I'm not a big fan of fanservice but I'm never bothered by it, at times I even enjoy it. Hearing about the skill points and class trees gets me excited.

Which are your top 5 series, is EO even included? haha

  • Dungeon Travelers (Dungeon Travelers 2 in particular)
  • Elminage (Elminage PS2 ver, Elminage 2 DS in particular)
  • Experience Inc titles (Students of Round / Stranger of Sword City in particular)

Yeah exactly thats what I mean. So will be interesting to see what kind of technique they used to solve that. Also wonder what they will do about the voices during battle. Am very curious about that to see what kind of localization / design techniques they will use if any.

I hope this has better balance than Demon Gaze.

Totally different game balance wise. Esp the fact that the classes you need to pick what skills you want to use rather than just reach X level to gain a pre-set skill, then you are stuck with just said skills.

Though this game has some good boss fights in it. Esp the post game stuff. Though only folks who do not mind doing a crazy amount of grinding will be able to access it. Dorarnae and Perorist should be able to tell you folks all about that lol.

Guess I can finally remove this from the import OT. lol

Do the already released versions have (meaningful) DLC? That could influence my decision to import or wait.

Etrian Odyssey and Atlus stuff like early persona games(do they count?) were my first Dungeon Crawlers, I went back to play some Wizardry stuff(I'm trying to finish Wizardry 4 atm) and I've wanted to get into Experience Inc stuff and Dungeon Travelers so I'm really glad we're getting them localized.

I'd check out the rest but I'm not sure if any are in english, I'll check when I get home.

EO3 ftw.

Also, are we missing anything by not playing DT1 before 2?

Pretty much. I should put Atlus stuff in general as like the devil summoner series and early SMT games were first person same with the battles. There are actually a lot of other titles I could add, such as the Totomono (School of Heroes) series, Kowloon Youma Gakuen Ki (never got localized) bunch of other stuff.

The first DT1 game was based off of the ToHeart2 series. And the story is totally self contained. Same goes for DT2. Original cast and different story. So folks who are concerned about that will not be missing out on anything. Id like to think seeing how they did this game if the sales do well they will try to push for To Heart 2: Dungeon Travelers. Though am not sure how the licensing would work on that as it contains characters from a different IP and am not familiar with the ToHeart franchise to know who owns the rights to what. Am sure those in the VN community would know though. Do not think any localized version of To Heart 2 ever came out to the US.

This game has some insanely good music too.

Dont listen to this if you want to keep the experience fresh, but for those curious about the quality of the music in the game click the links below.

Conception 2 is mostly just sexual innuendo in the script. You can touch the girls breasts later on but they get really mad at you, I dont think you're supposed to

Yeah, clearly they coded in the women in slightly risque situations ("oh, i'm only wearing a towel! please get this spider off my arm!") responding to all the possible places you could touch them ("ewww! the spider isn't thereeeeee!", "why are you touching me there!") because you're "not supposed to".

I do agree the game is really light in anything like that (wow, second base!), but c'mon.

I don't know about the specifics, but if 'battle dialog' is critical to gamplay, perhaps they'll just do a tiny of bit of translated voice acting for those few (likely repetitive) lines and just not worry about all the cutscenes/etc (keeping those subtitled). It would be a nice compromise that solved whatever issue might exist.

Its not that its really crucial but will be odd when just random quips in Japanese appear with no subtitles with them. Due to how english text is larger also, makes it harder to try and fit it in word bubbles and such.

The event / story scenes those are no problem, easy going for Atlus.

Oh, I saw this in my local game store for about $5. I didn't pick it up I was afraid it was a terrible game. I'll check and see if they still have it next time I pass by.

You really should get it, game is pretty hard though but its a very interesting change to the Wizardry series. Music and atmosphere is fantastic. Better run back quick before someone else in the know grabs it lol.

Will definitely buy to show that JP only audio is fine too. Especially if it means that games like this come over.

To be brutally honest and borderline unfair I doubt that any sort of VAs they could have got at a budget price would have been able to capture the unique VA work used with some of the cast in the game. Would have literally ruined the characters, as personally this is one of those rare titles where there is no unlikeable character. Unless someone is one of those irritating types who likes to say trope this trope that all the time. The voice work is what really gives the characters life.

hmmm... looks like it's one of those dungeon crawlers.

If the game's actually good, I might be in, but it looks a bit... questionable.

Demon Gaze, Operation Abyss, Moero Chronicle and Dungeon Travelers 2. And I know someone who mentioned DT2 would never get localized.

If you knew anything about game design and how much work goes into localization / decisions made based on the design of a title etc you would understand why the potential of giving the title a pass was high.

The question is did Atlus figure out something to make those particular design aspects of the game viable with subtitles squeezed in somehow or did they just say fuck it and will leave them unsubtitled under the decision of it being non crucial for story / gameplay.

As long as the overall quality of the product is good the fans should overlook it. Now in the event if Atlus did leave some small features not localized.

Are you joking with this crap? Man that's so uncalled for. Just own up that you made a mistake or ignore the post.

Regardless, I'm glad it's coming. My sort of game.

Nope I still stand by saying that was pretty sure that it was not going to come out and doubt that they would have gone with a full dub to fix those hurdles. Which seen here they did not go with a full dub as the game is subs only.

That leaves the question how did they handle those design aspects of the game where characters say small voiced lines which are made up of a "semi randomized" selection of phrases while wandering around in the dungeon on top of the voiced lines of that are sometimes said during battle when special moves are used along with victory phrases. Design wise am very curious to see how they will deal with this as its something unique to this title. With how Atlus is pretty good with their localization quality I would not imagine them to just leave sections untranslated in general. But the chance still exists of it just being written off as a worthwhile hit to the title as long as everything else is kept tight localization wise. As mentioned before there is no real impact to the story / gameplay as those random bits of dialog are just that, random for the most part. They even dont make sense at times in the JP version with how they appear, though it had been adjusted from the PSP version to be a little less "random". Outside of the non-skill related voiced bits and quips by the characters during battle from various things, wonder how / if they will have the subtitles displayed for the victory lines. As there is no Japanese subtitles appearing for it and it is just voiced. Though on the exp / victory line screen there is a section of space near the right bottom where a text box could be added in but would make things a bit overcrowded with how it is already.

As stated here am quite surprised to see that this is going to be localized considering all of the sections of the title that are a bit beyond standard localization for a non dub title.

Well, as someone that tends to prefer JP audio a bit, that makes me happy to hear that the VA work was that good. Like I said in the survey thread, I wouldn't mind if I had to pay $5 (max) for JP audio though if it meant Dual Audio.

It'll be pretty interesting to see how Operation Abyss and this game preform this summer since one is Japan audio only and the other is English audio only.

It's excellent. Nothing questionable about it other than the post game grind gates. The game systems all stand on their own very well and would still be great without the fan service layer.

I don't care about whether they put voice acting or what not. Just the very fact that this is coming to the west is HUGE.

Where do I get pre order. WHERE. WHEN. LET ME KNOW NOW. ALL MY MONEY.

Actually I think now how the genre has become more prominent in the West, there is a good chance for localization on top of it being a Vita title too. Since the original title had no touch controls, nor would they be necessary I would imagine it will be compat with the PSV TV also.

Though the difficult part is some of the sections where voices can be heard but there is no room for subtitles means that would a company want to dub it or just leave it as is? One example is in battle with the characters. In the dungeon when the characters say things at random those at least have speech bubbles where text can be inputted. But in battle there is no room for that, nor was it coded in as a feature.

I think you missed my point -- perhaps they'll actually do english voiceovers for those little random quips if they're required to understand for gameplay reasons. Just because they're not doing voice overs for the entire game doesn't mean they might not do some quick and easy ones for combat if required.

Yeah, I'm just talking about this stuff. If it's important to gameplay, they can just do a minimal amount of voice over work for those lines. Leave the rest of the game (plot, cutscenes, etc) subtitled. Again, I've never played the game. I'm just going off your assertion that they're complicated to do subtitles for yet important to gameplay.

For the title that is the one largest unfortunate part personally, yet at the same time its what makes the title popular too at the same time is the fanservice and characters.

Though as perorist has mentioned the game really is well made and it can stand on its own and even above other titles when it comes to the design and quality put into the this particular title. The hard part will be just for users who do not like fanservice at all to give the title a chance. Since unfortunately once again it is heavy in the game with the monster design and some of the event scenes.

DRPG fans though who want a challenge will most def have a good time with customizing their party.

One thing though is this title has a set party so there is no creating your original character, so people will have to keep that in mind ahead of time. Though the set characters in the game have multiple classes they can change into once level reqs are met. It is also possible to respec / change classes at a level reduction hit depending on the safe zones level wise for doing a respec.

The title overall has a lot of content to the main game which also including post game content. Also Sting is the developer behind the series for fans of that dev house and the fact that most def there are people who love the Wizardry / DRPG genre is behind the project shows with the amount of work put into the games design / mechanics.

The set party thing is a big plus for me, I prefer well-defined characters than stock ones I create myself or pick from a guild or something.

I know a bunch of Idolmaster fans picked up the game due to Haruka (Monica) & Ami + Mami's (Tsurara) VAs being in the game. Back then I had picked it up due to Alisia being voiced by Kayano Ai. The way her VO is done too is something that stands out from the other characters and goes well with how she is written personality wise.

Yeah the characters are very well done in the game. This is one title that I was really impressed with the VA work back on the PSP version for some of the characters. Especially the Maid Conet due to her unique way of talking.

Do agree that it is nice having set characters at times as really does help add a lot more to the overall games narrative. Game would have lost a lot of its charm if it was done with a character created party with the only interaction with the story characters during event scenes. One gets a lot more drawn into the world when there is a party that feels alive so to speak which this game does manage to do.

Wait, what!? I never expected this game to get a NA release. Needless to say, I am overjoyed. Original Japanese VO too. \o/

Day One Purchase.

Only thing I could imagine being censored a bit more would be event scenes that involve Lizerietta and Tsurara. Not sure if they would mess with some of the bosses though.

Guess we will have to wait for an official statement on it as am sure Atlusprime is gonna get those types of questions.

This is that To Heart thing?

Thats the previous title. The Vita remake comes out at the end of this month here in Japan.

This is the game that came out after the To Heart 2: Dungeon Travelers when both were originally on the PSP.
