What are your MSAA and Advanced Graphic options like?
I found those to be the most taxing.
and yeah, It might be the RAM too.
Are those shitty? That would explain so much :lol. I am a victim!
Superfetch brings my HDD down to its knees.
It will help that's for sure.
I've closed it now I'm sure MSAA was off and everything off in advanced.
I'm more pissed off at the fact Overclickers fudged up my order yesterday otherwise I'd have new gpu and new ram here :/

I think they are intended more as back up storage drives and not one that is under a lot of load/work. RPM is 5400(?) whereas a WD Blue is 7200.

i've decided to give up on 1080p 60fps. i mean i can get it running at that and it looks good but the lack of AA and all the pop in ruins it. i've settled for 1080p 30fps and put on x4 MSAA and maxed out the 2 adjustable settings under advanced graphics.
considering dropping grass quality cause that always drops the frame rate. entering highways/interiors also seems to cause frame drops.

The game seems to use about 6.5GB of RAM for me most of the time, so 4 probably wouldn't cut it.

Was there any entry in the "Windows Logs/System" at the same time as your GTA V crash entry from "Windows Logs/Applications" ?
Yeah I'll test it tomorrow when my ram arrives.

It does have a log. Go into your document and find Rockstar Game or sth.

Yeah your 970 should be mostly smashing this game at 1080p. Must be the system RAM.

Turns out there is a "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." entry in there, but it took place about two minutes before GTA crashed :/

Perhaps GPU instability caused the GTA crash even though the driver itself had not yet crashed. What card do you have and what are the temperatures like on it?
What power management do you have in the nVidia control panel?
If you keep getting crashes it might be worth changing the settings in the nVidia control panel to Prefer maximum performance.
I know 900 series cards can drop power which causes crashes although I thought older less demanding games were more the cause.
Are shadows set to very high?

I have a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G and I've never seen the temps go above 70 degrees. I've also had "prefer maximum performance" switched on since the game came out, so I'm not sure what's happening.
That being said, I've had three crashes in about 10 hours of playtime, so it's not so bad.

I think HD 5770 is pretty much the low end requirement, but I'm not sure if you'll have much fun with the kind of settings that you'll need to use in order for GTA V to run okay-ishly in terms of fps.
Thank you for posting this. I played ~20 hours with that juddering camera, so much better now.
Weird, it says it's 7200 RPM when I ran tests on the thing. I'd never buy a 5400 for gaming. Welp, I must have made a huge mistake.

I have read conflicting specifications for the drive so I might be talking utter rubbish. I have just seen a lot of people advise to not use it as a gaming drive.

Well as said above it takes about 6 so you're likely to have plenty of problems

So do we have an official comparison between a HDD and SDD?
I'm considering moving it over but I've heard whispers that it barely makes a difference. For clarity I'm not concerned about the load times but the texture streaming rather.

Just grab another 4GB of RAM. The game routinely uses 5+ GB RAM for me, I'm running the same GPU and CPU. RAM is cheap enough and this game will absolutely use it.

It still runs fine on 4GB of RAM (I've tried it). You can also kill as many neadless processes on your system before running the game, even explorer.exe.
If I were to guess, I'd say distance sliders and anything that increases the amount of data to load (like pedestrian variety) will have the most affect on your RAM.

I tried windows, it made things way worse oddly enough. So yeah I guess it's different depending on your system.

I've just tended to leave my CPU/MB/RAM combo alone and upgrade around it.
I've got a Samsung 840 SSD too - will that help mitigate it with a fast page file or do I really need some more RAM?

Okay from other responses it looks like I'm buying more RAM.
Can someone recommend a good 8/16GB kit that will be compatible with my P8P67 Pro AND work in future platforms (if such a thing exists). Cheers!

I believe so, I was also experiencing a strange stutter when I had RAW input. Direct did work better, but sensitivity was a bit too low for me. I ended up with windows mouse and cranked up the sensitivity to get to where it felt just right. Personal preference.

Also I've seen some requests about adding some comparison shots of graphics settings to the OP. I'll try to get something for everyone today, I was a bit weary about filling the OP with dozens of pictures though.

Distance scaling is the more heavy handed setting. Thats your baseline. If you lower that you will easily notice the difference in LOD and pop-in.
The extended slider doesn't make quite as much of a difference, its just extended it a little bit further from my testing. I notice a difference with it a 0 vs 100% with some minor objects popping in sooner.
Everything in the "Advanced" menu is gravy really. If you are having perf issues that should be the first place you start disabling stuff.
U not gonna play on a high resolution with that one and with only 1GB VRAM u are probably stuck with normal textures. Yeah the game could run easy I think on a low resolution, but I doubt it's gonna look pretty. Getting at least 30fps is very doable though. Lots of settings to customize.

"Parking" seems relevant, some processes seems to make the HDD make a complete stop. Like when I play something load intensive it can take 20 seconds, or 5 minutes. :lol I'll look it up!
Edit: Hm, looking it seems the Green drives are just shit if you want to do more intensive things like gaming. I'll get a WD Black next I guess
. The 1tB drives aren't that expensive and I can just install Windows and the games on the faster HDD and keep media and shit on the slower one like God intended.You've got the same exact setup as me, same motherboard too. I've grabbed some Kingston from Overclockers.

Thats right unfortunately. Pretty much the single most known drive to avoid today. Mainly due to the head parking issue when people bought these for NAS drives. They werent good for performance, and then turned out to be very unreliable too.
Have a look at the Toshiba ACA drives for a good alternative.
WD Green drives were originally aimed at set-top box devices. They're inexpensive, high-capacity, low noise disks with bottom tier performance. They keep noise to a minimum by parking the heads often and are suited to devices that sit idle for a long periods, or need to be near silent. Don't put them in a PC. If you absolutely cannot afford solid state and you're looking at WD's range for a desktop, you should choose Blue in most cases or maybe Black if noise is irrelevant and you want a superior warranty.
Well after running with a really solid 60fps for quite awhile, I got to the Marriage counseling mission and was up on the hills with a really big view of the city and lots of grass, etc. My framerate tanked and was sitting around 45-55 
I turned off FXAA though I think I want to turn it back on even as ugly as it is.. better than no AA at 1080p. I turned down grass from very high to high. It made a small difference. I think I'll start tweaking down the advanced menu. Long shadows and bringing down the sliders.
I don't want to sacrifice too much visuals but I would always prefer a 60+ framerate than a little extra eye candy.
