GTA V PC Performance Thread

This didn't help.

Seems that the pauses come and go at random. At one time they are common and make the game unplayable and other times they are rare. Changing settings or installing the game on different drives doesn't do anything at all. I just don't know where else to look. It's a shame because pauses aside the game runs super smooth and even the benchmark never goes below 60.

And i'm not going to buy an SSD drive just for this game.

There's a setting in the options called pause on focus loss. Try turning that off and see if that helps.

For anyone else having issues with buildings/roads not appearing at times, I finally fixed it by setting the priority to high in task manager. Now the game runs flawlessly for me at 50 fps. Can't reach 60 except for certain areas but i'm fine with that.

I see this statement quite a lot but am I right in saying that a 970 with an overclock doesn't mean 980 performance? As I understand it, the 980 has more over the 970 than simply clock speed.

Indeed, it has more hardware at its disposal which we can match by brute force (clocks). Stock 980 clocks are pretty low in comparison to mine. So overall the performance is within a few %.

IIRC I score 13600 in firestrike Gpu score.
Stock 980 is around 13300.

Overclocked 980 probably hits 14500-15000.

Well, I'm getting surprisingly good performance on my rig - Win 8.1 Pro, FX 8350 (not OC), 8 GB RAM, HD 7950 (not OC). During the day average 45-50 FPS (in some areas solid 60) with some minor deeps to 35-38 FPS (which are barely noticeable), at night 50-55 FPS without any deeps. All of that is without new AMD beta driver optimized for the game, which I don't even care to install right now cuz the game is running very well most of the time. So, I take my words back about poor optimizations. Don't trust benchmarks, test the game on your own rig to see more accurate results.

Here are my settings:

All advanced graphics settings is turned off for obvious reasons.

Apart from an extra 0.5GB vRAM, it doesn't have anything that a clock speed boost can't make up for, is the point. You can definitely get nearly 980 performance with an OC'd 970.

But of course a 980 can be OC'd as well...

There's gotta be some kind of memory leak issue. I've noticed my RAM usage slowly rise, too. It gets super juttery and laggy after 2-3 hours of play.

That's my impression too. Out of my group of 5-6 friends playing this game, only one other friend is experiencing some memory leak issues. The rest aren't having any major problems.

Hope this gets patched.

I'm interested to see if there's any real world performance impact when my additional 8gigs of RAM gets here.

I currently have 8, have another 8 on the way. I wasn't going to do it but Newegg just happened to have a sale this week on the EXACT sticks I have in my machine. For $50 it's worth taking a stab at it. I've run up against the 8gigs in two games so far - BF4 and GTAV. I expect that to continue.

Worst case scenario I just have an extra 8gigs for minimal money.

I already have this on PS4 but am thinking of double dipping.

My pc specs are:
i5 2500K with a slight overclock
16GB ram
2 x 680 SLI w/4 gb vram

Are my specs enough to play this at 1080p / 60fps? Will I be able to play on very high?

I'm really, really impressed by this port.

I've only got a modest PC, i5 4460, HD6850 (1GB memory lol) and 4GB RAM but this game still runs extremely smooth on the default graphics with Vsync and FXAA on. Sure at default it only looks and feels a little better than the PS4/X1 version but heck I figured i'd have to wait until I upgraded my card to an 280x later this month for a playable experience even on lowest of the low settings.

just me or is the lag pretty bad online? it pretty much ruins the co-op experience for me when everyone's car is pretty much hovering/warping around the map.

This game has some very strange issues in terms of performance, was out in the desert, fps was tanking out of nowhere, so I alt-enter to desktop and then alt-enter back again and straight away my frame rate is back at 60 and smooth as butter all the settings exactly the same as before.

What on earth could be causing this?

Maybe DX11_game_only_enabling_TripleBuffering_after_loosing_focus_bug.

i7 3770 @3.4 GHz
GTX 660
10GB RAM

Game looks good enough and runs really well (between 60 and 50 FPS). Really satified with this result on my below average GPU.

Based Rockstar.

There are a few games that act like this, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and (I think) Dying Light as well. You're basically getting double buffered vsync until you alt+tab, then you get tasty triple buffering.

I moved he game on my main HDD (C:\) and it seems the stutter/pauses have been reduced dramatically. I also did what you said after that to see if they will go away completely but i'm still not sure if this makes any difference.

Anyone else tried using other refresh rates than "half" or "60"? There are a few more choices it seems. How about 50? I wouldn't mind bumping a few more things higher if i could go for stable 50 (i'm pretty much stable 60 now but i would like to have shadows to "very high").

Is there a way to install GTA V without Windows Media Player? Years ago I destroyed my Windows Media Player installation because I wanted to downgrade to WMP 11 (from 12 which is included with Win7). Now I can't reinstall the WMP anymore.

EDIT: Never mind, somehow it worked now to reinstall WMP 12 although the I got an error message in the end, lol. I don't care, the installer for GTA V is working now, woohoooo! Sucks that Google Chromium needs to be installed though...

One thing I've noticed about this game is that vsync on is a good thing. On my second system with a single 780, I was getting over 90 fps at 1080p with vsync off but it ended up stuttering like crazy. Went back to turn vsync on, capped it at 60fps but damn it's buttery smooth.

For all of you out there playing with vsync off, try turning it on. Night and day.

Shee, even after downgrading to DirectX 10/10.1 the seemingly random "GTAV stopped working" error still occurs... sucks. If I didn't get the game on Steam for so cheap during the price glitch, I'd ask for a refund at this point.

E: I had a similar reproducable crash on the same location yesterday, Garuda. Worked after restarting my computer twice, maybe it helps.

I just did the same... I think it will improve quite a bit, maybe not in-game but just being able to alt-tab without waiting minutes is worth it to me.

Turning on my custom music station is causing the framerate to drop by about 10fps while it is on. Turning it to any other station stops the drop. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Yep, one of the things posted on the OP, this is because the game is scanning the music folder for custom tracks. Also depends on how much music you have in there, the more music the longer the game loads and worse it performs :(

So, theoretically, instead of having 20 different song files in the folder, you could mix them into 1 bigger audio file and the game would perform better because it's basically just 1 file?

What, really? IV didn't have that performance drop while using IndependenceFM. What a bummer, I wanted to include most of my music library. Isn't there an option to scan the music tracks in the folder only once?

I know this is performance thread but I'd really like to know if there's a way to make the cloud save work on multiple pc systems. Doesn't seem to work for me. No saved data available when I run the game on multiple pc systems.

Doesn't that station have custom commercials and banter? You would lose all that if it was one big file.

Yeah but at least you will be able to listen to that nice Nightrider station someone uploaded on Youtube without making the game slower (i assume, i haven't tested it).

In regards to the custom music, is it possible to add tracks to the game's regular stations? when I get this I have a lot of music that'd fit in with the other stations and I'd rather put them there.

Don't think so. This has never been possible in any GTA game.

So weird thing about those crashes I was having last night. I think having the Rockstar Social Club opened up in a browser tab on another screen might have been causing them. Each time right after I crashed, it would show the Rockstar Launcher and request that I log back into Social Club.

I had two crashes yesterday within a half hour of starting up the game. SP, Online, didn't matter. However after closing the RSC page, I didn't crash or get dropped out of the game at all for the rest of the evening.

Anecdotal, I know. But I'll check and see if I'm crash-free this evening.

Is there anybody playing in 4K? What AA do you use?

I'm using FXAA but was wondering if driver level AA or MSAA would be better, thanks in advance.

Anyones framerate all over the place with a AMD 290? I seem to run anywhere between 35 and 90fps... I don't mind not being a solid 60 but with it jumping all over the place it seems a little disracting.

When I have messed with the graphics difference I have seen barely any difference between having 2xMSAA with everything maxed out to turning MAA off and the advanced shadow settings. Still seems to run at about 50fps as average but jumps to 35/90 depending on location.

At 1080p, get an average of 50-80 fps depending on the level of action. If I enable vsync then the game locks me at around 60 fps (with consistant performance) despite my 122Hz refresh rate.

depending on the rig I'd take AA off entirely, at 4K aa is kinda overkill imo. But then again im on a single card, im sure the SLI/Crossfire crowd would say differently.

At 4K you either don't use AA at all or you use FXAA. The downsides of the latter are removed from FXAA and it allows you to get a slightly cleaner image at relatively low cost.

Anyone got any ideas about my issue:

I can run at locked 60fps at max settings and 4K. If I whack up the distance scaling though my framerate drops significantly to about 45fps. But my gpu and CPU usage don't massively increase and I can't tell what it is.

I'm running SLI Titan X's and they probably are at about 70% usage each. The only way I can max out the usage is like if I downsample from 5K or greater, and its a great framerate until I put on distance scaling.

Any idea what's happening?

4790k
8GB RAM.

Thinking about OCing my 980 for this game. If I do it using PrecisionX (I've got an EVGA card) does the OC stick or does it only run OCed if I have PrecisionX running in the background?
