GTA V PS4: 1080@30, Core i3/750Ti: 1080@60. How is this possible?

I don't understand why people are having issues with this thread and attacking the OP for his bias. He wears it on his sleeve, sure, but what's your problem with the content of the post?

According to digital foundry there are dips as low as 24 fps in some racing sections.

The article states that the game runs at 60 fps on average with a minimum drop to 42. I think it's not too much of a stretch to say that it's near double the performance.

It probably has to do with the CPU as the game scales quite dramatically based on CPU alone.

Oh? Then that is explained. The PS4 GPU is a bit weaker than I expected. Also, if I'm not mistaken, an Nvidia TFLOP yields higher performance than an AMD TFLOP.
 
I wouldn't be too surprised if the PS4 version would have FPS hovering around the 50s a lot of the time, considering performance usually isn't too different between a 750 ti / i3 and PS4, although I guess they just had to lock it to 30 for stability.

Well the 750ti is doing a failry stable 60. So I'm not even sure why this is being brough up. For a fairly stable 60, the 750ti must be hitting above 60 too.

Sure, better hardware would have been better, but I think the PS4 is a damn cool system. The Order is one of the most impressive games I've ever seen (visually), so it's not like it can't do great visuals.

I think it's plenty capable for at least the next four years or so.

Certainly not 60 with dips, otherwise they wouldn't have capped it at 30 (with dips).
 
Oh whats that, you mean you really can get the same performance as XB1/PS4 in some games using PC hardware that doesn't cost thousands of dollars? Surely the hourly driver updates and inability to use an hdmi wire/controller combo means you can't play on a TV, it's too bad PC gaming is so locked down.

Yeah both consoles are capable of impressive things, but still when you see 1080/30 or even 900/30 now (below that in some cases), it's depressing. I honestly don't want consoles games to be limited by this hardware for another 4 years and we're still early in to the gen...

That it paints their favorite console in a bad light, is it not obvious? They are being biased while attacking and attempting to dismiss Alexandros based on his supposed bias. Without even a hint of irony.
 
Probably down to the general processing power of the PS4. We've seen this happening numerous times where a 750 Ti matches or bests the PS4 in equivalent settings.
Double the framerate though is pretty staggering.
 
I am dubious of this article, until we actually know what the console equivalent settings are it is just guess work. For all we know high could be running the equivalent settings of the 360/PS3 version and very high is the Xbone/PS4 equivalent settings.

It is, since, as others also said, the PS4 version's average fps has to be considerably higher than 30fps to deliver locked 30fps gameplay. Probably something in the range of 35-45fps, we don't really know. Hence, this PC configuration could well deliver "only" 50% more performance, not double.

That doesn't make the general point, that 6 Jaguar cores at 1.6Ghz are underpowered compared to Intel processors, invalid, but OP is still somewhat hyperbolic.

I'm not sure we did a new video but I can confirm from tests that areas we tested originally now hold 30fps solid.

Currently a completely locked 30 with no dip ever? not even one frame higher than 33.33333333 ms?

Impressive gains since release. It would be nice to hear about what "optimizations" devs go into.

I haven't been able to reproduce any dips in the latest version, at least. Areas that were troubled are now 100% locked.

Agreed. Many seem to be making a one sided argument without realizing that it's the exact same situation on the other side.
 
Minimum being 42 is pretty damn good. I played through the PS4 version earlier this year and had some major frame hickups, especially driving around busy intersections and what not.
 
For one thing, most games today aren't really pushing the CPU to its limit. That's why you'll see i3/i5 processors performing as well or better than i7s, and why people are still getting by on 4 year-old 2500Ks: there's nowhere for all that extra power to go unless you're playing a title that requires a lot of computing power (some strategy games are, on the contrary, very CPU dependent). Third- or first-person action games, though, are all about the GPU.

Secondly, the PS4 and XB1 are packing GPUs that are about on par with an overclocked GTX 560Ti, with the PS4's being just a smidge more powerful. So the consoles are working with four year-old, entry-level graphics tech to save on costs, because I guess they decided that was good enough for the living room. When 4K and VR become standard (I'm guessing around 2017-2018), they won't be good enough for long.

This console gen might be the shortest yet.

It's not.

Both the PS4 and the Xbox One are weak machines. Obviously the XB1 is a bit weaker than the PS4, but this whole assumption that the PS4 is amazing hardware is wrong.

In relative terms, this is the weakest generation of consoles ever. Both these machines were crippled right out of the gate.

I think it's reasonable to assume that there may be patches for the PC version as well, not to mention optimized drivers. The argument that we don't know how fast the PS4 version would run unlocked is quite valid in my opinion. However, I find it rather hard to believe that it could get close to 30. If it did then Rockstar would probably target a 60fps refresh rate or offer more eye candy at the 30 fps level, right? I believe it is a more or less logical assumption.

That's not how maths and averages work, brah. It's an unlocked framerate on PC, while it's locked to 30 on PS4. It could average 45 or 50 FPS for all we know.
 
Also from the looks of things Rockstar worked really hard on this port. The port is even optimized for i5 and i7 processors, there's like only like 1% of PC games that do that.

This thread will degenerate to another childish PC vs. console argument in a little while, but I won't be around. Gonna continue my GTAV playthrough (on PC, for anyone interested).

Very true. I still feel it's worth discussing since on one hand you've got higher IPC and on the other hand more cores and miniscule CPU overhead. I don't know what's going on.
 
CPU trolling? Why are you baiting for an answer when you already know the answer?

You want a modern console box for 300 or 400 bucks that does a lot? You have to use an APU to make it a financially viable reality these days. The current APUs sacrifice transistor real estate for the GPU portion of the chip. This entails the cost/benefit tradeoff of having a weaker CPU. Sony and MS know that the best cost/benefit trade-off is doing it this way. So, they do it this way. They are also hoping GPGPU mitigates this somewhat.

They are trying to future proof the consoles with a graphical feature set akin to that found in true DX12 GPUs. The only way they could do that and stay within a mass market budget window of $300 to $400 retail was designing the APUs the way they did.
