Rumor: Mass Effect 4 details leak through survey

You'll play the part of an inexperienced explorer, just trying to keep your head above water in the cosmic ocean alongside a ragtag band of misfits, until one day you stumble across a mysterious artefact that TRANSFORMS YOUR ENTIRE LIFE AS YOU KNOW IT AND WILL LEAD TO YOU BECOMING INTERGALACTIC TURBO-PRESIDENT LEADING A MIGHTY ARMY OF A TRILLION SOULS, BOTH LIVING AND LONG-DEAD, IN ONE FINAL BATTLE TO DETERMINE THE TRUE RULER OF THE ELEVENTH DIMENSION!

Really, all I wanted was a new ancient mysterious alien race that left shit behind them. I love that shit way, way too much.

Sounds fucking awesome

Yeah, I love poking round ancient ruins. As long as they make them visually distinct from the Protheans, everything should be fine.

Some of that sounds really good but I really wished we wouldn't play as another saviour of the human race with the fate of the world on his/her shoulders. Would have been a lot more interesting if the premise was to play as someone more initially insignificant who is driven by personal goals and desires. Maybe have the character thrown into a situation which forces him/her to form an uneasy alliance with a few other alien characters, all suspicious of each other, in order for any of them to survive.

But what do I know, maybe they'll execute it well and all is well. The ancient alien race with forgotten super tech is kind of played out at this point though.

Admit it, you still love it.

After ME3 I'd buy this day one for the multiplayer alone, but a lot of that single player stuff sounds great too. Hopefully this survey is legit.

Definitely.

My only fear right now is that they'll make the same mistakes they did with DA:I. Too many fetch quests, it just didn't feel like a living world. Go around picking shit up, nobody ever talks, you don't even get the quests by talking to people, they just are there etc

The earlier ME games had traces of this, but overall I was fine with them. So as long as they do things like they used to, I'm happy.

Explore the surfaces of 100s of planets in the Helius Cluster in your versatile land vehicle, the Mako.

Please be true. Please.

100s of explorable planets huh? Please don't make another Dragon Age Inquisition but this time with the Mass Effect franchise. Don't give me a bunch of meaningless tasks, fetchquests and collectibles. The pacing in Inquisition is absolutely fucked and the main story incredibly short (so short that they force you to do some optional stuff to unlock parts of it). I'd rather have 20-25 hours of meaningful content to be honest. I'll be there day one but this does not exactly inspire confidence.

Sounds fantastic. I love the idea of being an explorer on a hostile frontier. Shit, they've even got raids in there. Could be just as addictive as Destiny for me.

DA:I was now that i look back not a very good game. And a lot of that sounds very similar.
I hope the Mass Effect Team does better, but for now this info didn't instill me with confidence.
Story itself sounds ok. Just don't go the stupid Ubisoft way with the gameplay please.

ME3 multiplayer + unlimited raid variations.

Thankyou. We are a rare bunch, but we acknowledge the truth. I mean it'll surely be better mechanically. But ew.
But that was the only game which allowed us to explore planet surfaces, albeit through the crazy ass Mako, but I think the excitement is the fact that we can physically explore planets rather than just scanning them.

Hmm... andromeda does have the benefit of offering a new playground that allows them to ignore previous locations without fans going "but I want to see Earth/Citadel again!"

I wonder how they'd explain flying to a different galaxy without a relay. FTL travel was barely enough to fly to nearby stars.

And why does it have to be another I AM LEADER OF SO MANY COLONIES instead of just leader of one crew and their adventures only. Like in the first ME, and star trek etc.

Its still just a survey so it might not be like i think it is.

Tons of big areas? Fetch quests ahooooooy!

It all sounds great though, as long as they don't screw it up with infinite MMO quests. I loved all the ME games (3 wasn't that bad) so I'll be there day 1 regardless.

Why do I have to save everyone? Why can't I just do cool shit with my crew and I decide if I want to be a nice guy or a criminal? I want to daredevil, not Superman/Thor.

That setting sounds really tame. And what's with the focus on resource gathering and colony management? Sounds like they're going the AssCreed route.

Transitions between activities, like flying your Tempest (space ship) across a solar system to land on a mineral rich planet, then jumping into your Mako (land vehicle) to explore the surface of planet, all happen smoothly without loading screens.

This is my favorite part. It would be a dream come true.

Just please don't give us a bunch of meaningless tasks and fetchquests like Dragon Age: Inq.

Logically, if it's a different galaxy, then the only established races you'll see will be those (if any) brought with you, and given the possible extinction of several, I'd be surprised if we saw anything bar a few Asari, Salarians and Turians. Which is why I said this sounds like Mass Effect in name only.

Or they'll ignore the plot holes and we'll see everyone. Fuck knows frankly.

A Krogan colony is mentioned. So probably they'll just say that the Genophage eventually got cured whatever Shepard decided.

100s of planets has me fearing that this isn't like a tight Mass Effect experience and is more fluff exhaustion like Inquisition.

This all sounds like stuff that could have been extrapolated from what we already know/they have revealed (Mako, pathfinder initiative, arkcon etc) with the design template directly lifted from DA:I. They've got a war table analog including missions that take real time to complete, optional combat encounters to strengthen an abstract "power" mechanic, setting up colonies instead of establishing camps etc.

Like it's plausible that Bioware designed ME Next based on the DAI template, but I also don't want to believe we're about to get the same terrible series of design decisions infesting Mass Effect.

1) Many of those side missions sound DA:I'ish. Hopefully they have a real effect on the game world.

2) Will game writers ever attempt to move past the Precursors trope?

The premise sounds great on paper and I like how it's far removed from the original trilogy. There are a few Bioware tropes in there but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised at that. Lots of it sounds exciting nonetheless, cautiously optimistic.

Agreed. The Citadel worked as well as it did because it was more personal and had a limited scope. Think of the fanservice what you want but I want to see more of that kind of stuff. Similar to the episodes in Star Trek. You don't have to make an epic story out of everything, consequences and choices can mean just as much on a smaller scale if you care about the subject matter.

So you are a rookie explorer with no experience who for no real reason becomes the sole colonizer of the whole new galaxy amassing loads of treasures and resources and leading numerous strike groups of mercenaries all while battling this unknown and mysterios ancient alien race that most likely will lead to the destroction of all life as we know it unless you manage ti stop it?

Ugh

Fucking A!
Can't wait.

This sounds real. I can't help but feel like this "you're a leader making alliances and setting up outposts" thing from DA:I is how bioware is going to so things from now on.

Expect a lot of farming for "power" or what the hell they are going to call it in this game.

I haven't finished DA:I because of the God damn power requirement for doing missions..

I don't want to farm (!!!) to get further on in the story of my single player rpg... That's just embarrassing.

Is it saying that it's going to have No Man's Sky style flying from planet to planet? That's what it sounds like to me.

Interesting choice of the Andromeda galaxy as our Milky Way is due to collide with the Andromeda galaxy in around 4 billion years. I wonder if the 'far removed time' they mention could actually be that far removed?

It does sound eminently believable to me.

BioWare has always used "templates" for their games, either for plot or gameplay, i think.
Unfortunately what the survey tells about ME4, it sure does sound like DAI. Too much so...
(I didn't find DAI to be a very good game. Pretty terrible really.)

Yeah, I remember taking that DA survey and despite the developer denials, most of what was in there turned out true.

Sounds very... busyworkish. Strike teams, fogs of war towers.. is this ubisoft's mass effect? EDIT: and the outposts from Far Cry. ehhhh

ehhhhhhhh

That was the impression I got from reading that too. Basically expanding out the crappy repeatable, Ubisoft style collectable fetch quests over a whole galaxy.

That sounds dreadful. But after Inquisition, I can totally see BioWare doing that. I want unique sidequests heavy in story from BioWare, not these repeatable cookie cutter missions they can easily dump over huge maps to pad out their games with filler.

Agreed. Certain elements sound very cool (seemless space exploration if they pull that off), but what I want to know is if there is a gripping narrative experience for folks who aren't too into multiplayer, AI missions (basically war table?), randomly generated content, etc. The narrative elements that are in here sound derivative of previous games in the series (Lost alien race with powerful technology, nasty space bandit groups, embattled Krogans).

I've liked all the Mass Effects to one extent or another, and maybe these surveys try to keep the most interesting narrative elements under wraps, but so far, this sounds like any paint by numbers checklist Western AAA game from the last few years.

Well the only reasonable thing for BioWare to do now would be to bring out a trailer to clear up all the details.
