Yakuza 3 was released 5 years ago

I only played the first game on ps2 about 4 years ago and then stopped, but I decided to come back to the series when the english version of Y5 was finally announced! So I did Y2&3 back to back, and like many people here on GAF I like Yakuza 2 better.

3 isn't bad at all, but has some really really bad design choice that make some parts of the game feel like a chore to play through. I'm thinking mostly of the awful chase battles. They're not funny, they're not challenging in a good way, they're just frustrating. And, to add insult to injury, they're often placed after a big fight sequence, without giving you any chance to save in between. I also wonder why the game gives you the chance to improve your running stats (making the aforementioned sequences a lot easier) AFTER having suffered through them.

The combat is lots of fun and, picking the hard difficulty level from the start, challenging... but some of the boss is really boring, like
kazama shintaro's brother
. Even with the cut content there's plenty of sidemissions, activities and minigames to deal with, some is fun, some is atrocious (ufo catcher, anyone?). I really like NOT completing all of them but just the ones I felt like to: in open world games I like the feeling of being part of a fictional world that has more to offer than what I've seen in my playthrough... and this game has lots of this stuff.

Storywise there's some overused tropes that is really starting to be annoying at this point: as more than one people already pointed out before me,
how many people does stupid Kiryu have to see die before learning to fully incapacitate an opponent before turning his back on him?
. It happens way too often.

BTW is a good entry as a whole and let me interested enough in the series to make me want to continue with 4&5... which should also be much better games!

4 is really fun. The 3 other playable characters are all vastly different than Kiryu, in both personality and fighting style. It keeps the game fresh and interesting. Once again, play on hard for the best experience, especially since you played the previous games.

Cannot wait for 5.

Will surely do, thanks for the advice ;). Have the chase battles got any better since 3? I almost rage-quit the series as a whole during
chapter 6. Or was it 7? When chasing the yellow suited kung fu guy I mean

It's been a while, but I don't recall facing any issues with chase sequences.

I beat Yakuza 4 off of PS+ the other week and now have this game coming from Amazon :) Excited to play it. Is the general consensus that it's better than 4?

Most fans would consider 4 better than 3 and it is a great game. Personally I prefer 3 but you honestly can't go wrong with it, good times :)

Yakuza 3 is the worst in the series for me, with some good gameplay improvements tho.

Slow story, you might get to hate how the game focused so much around childs, Kiryu was starting to feel worn out like there wasn't much left they could do with him...

I'm not sure what they pretended to do with the game, what the focus was, what they intended us to feel when playing it.

They realized this with Yakuza 4, by Kiryu not being the whole focus he doesn't feel worn out that time around and the Yakuza universe expands a lot thanks to the new characters and different battle styles :) (I loved the young police cop the most tho)
I also had a blast at the end of the game, unlike in Y3.

The cuts were stuff I never bothered with in Yakuza games anyways so I honestly could not care less about them.

The game itself was great though, bringing Yakuza to the gen perfectly (I know kenzan was first but w.e) the most memorable for me being that cell phone event finding thing for new moves with that photographer guy, me and my roommate did some together and it was a great old time.

Also
RiP that guy with the snake on his back who always said aniki.
My roommate and some friends really ruined that moment by walking in when that happened.
