I know this has been covered a lot but I gotta ask:

What are Gaf's thoughts on the I7 5820K vs. the I7 4790K from a STRICTLY gaming perspective.

It comes down to overclocking. In a lot of games (most, I'd say, especially older ones), the 4790k will win at stock. But if you can get the 5820k's speeds up, it's a better choice.

Hello friends,

what do I upgrade? My PC is 4 years old by now.

i5-2500k@4,3Ghz
16GB DDR3
Asus P67 Deluxe
Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 3x 2048MB.

I'm mostly concerned about the graphics part for GTA, Witcher and Co. as the VRAM is clearly lacking by now, though I also want to ask if I would benefit from a new CPU.

Hey guys, I've been planning a new PC for quite some time, as my current desktop is about 5ish years old (5850/AMD 955/4GBRAM) and while its lasted me awhile it's finally starting to prove troublesome, especially in the RAM and VRAM areas, frequently games are pushing my RAM to 90-100% use/crashing.

I was looking to build a ultra high end PC this fall. Probably gonna go with a 390X/390 if they are up to snuff/worth it when they come out, and the upcoming Skylake that is supposed to hit this late summer/fall. My question is, is it wise/advisable for me to start buying parts now for the extraneous parts, such as RAM/MOBO/PSU/Heatsink/Storage/Case/Etc. Or is skylake going to require a new type of motherboard? Or will there be new better motherboard offerings upcoming between now and fall? Better DDR4 options? Better SSD's? New cases? Or are those steady enough where that the game isn't going to change in a few months like GPU/CPU is.

As someone who has been out of the game for awhile if anyone could shed some light/advice I'd sincerely appreciate it.

Well I put it all together today and have to say it wasn't as daunting as I thought it'd be. Actually loved every minute of building my PC so far! Big thanks to GAF for all the help along the way.

1 issue I'm noticing in testing is that the fans in my case all seem to be working full-on, all the time. I've tried tweaking hardware settings in the BIOS but they just ignore it and stay at 100%, not throttling at all. Everything is working fine, temps all seem perfect but I'd like to get the fans under control and the noise level down a bit.

Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated.

Case: NZXT S340
Mobo: MSI Z97 PC mate
Fans: 2 stock case fans
2 noctua NFA 14 pwm
1 stock Intel cooler (until the evo 212 arrives)

You plugged them into the motherboard, right? You may need to save settings and exit the BIOS for those settings to take effect. Also, according to the software manual guide for your motherboard, the MSI Command Center software utility has options for controlling fan speed as well as setting fan profiles and curves.

I know this has been covered a lot but I gotta ask:

The quad core i7 4790K (and the i5 4690K) are enough for most gaming scenarios. The extra money for the two i7 models over the i5 model don't translate into an appreciable framerate performance, as hyperthreading on the i7 models don't really contribute too much to gaming. In the case of the i7 5820K, that's a little more futureproof in that it comes on a newer motherboard platform which should see forthcoming new CPU support in the next few years (Broadwell-E and most likely Skylake-E), as well as the fact that it works with DDR4 memory.

The usual advice is that the i5 4690K is best value and should be good for 4+ years if the i5 2500K is anything to go by. If you want to go longer without needing to replace as much stuff, then the i7 5820K and X99 might be preferable, but it does come with extra initial costs (X99 and DDR4 is more expensive).

As for whether future gaming will take advantage of more processing threads, there already exist games and game engines that scale well to multiple cores (GTAV, Dragon Age Inquisition, etc) but even then the i5 4690K when overclocked presents the best value as overclocking allows it to perform fairly well compared to the higher end i7 processors, .

As for whether to go with the 4790K or 5820K, it'll come down to how much you want to initially spend and how frequently you think you'll be upgrading your PC.

You'll see the most difference by upgrading to a new graphics card. The i5 2500K is still a very potent processor and not very far behind current processors, according to this test by Ocaholic. I don't recommend you upgrade to the 2600K/3770K as the hyperthreading won't really benefit you in games.

Skylake will come on the new Z170 motherboard platform which also uses the new socket 1151 and is incompatible with existing socket 1150 motherboards. Later motherboards are also expected to adopt DDR4, USB 3.1, and USB type C ports, so I'd advise you hold off on buying parts. In general, we recommend waiting until you can purchase most of your parts at the same time, unless you see a really good deal on something you definitely want. Buying parts early and sitting on them for months does nothing but let the warranty period run out early, and Skylake is still maybe half a year away if there are no delays.

If you really want to start buying parts or just want to know what to keep an eye out for, it's expected that Skylake will reuse the same heatsink mounting design as the existing socket 115X motherboards, so that's safe to buy. Cases, power supplies, and hard drives won't really change either, so that's safe as well. SSDs you may want to hold off, you never know if there will be new technological advances, new product announcements, or lower prices by the time Skylake is out.

My brother is building a PC for a MAME cabinet and sent me the following parts list. Figured I would share, my main concerns are the CPU and graphics card. He wants to do console emulation as well so I know he doesn't need much but is it worth it to step up in either of these areas? He's going with an LCD so I don't think he needs a particular video output. He probably doesn't need a case either. Also going to talk him out of a recert HDD.

RAM confuses me greatly. I've got 8gb (2x4) 1866MHz running in my system. 1866MHz is supported by my motherboard, but Speccy tells me it's running at 655.1MHz.

Is it because I'm missing something obvious about how RAM works (i.e. 1866 is from 655.1 times-ed by the number of chips on the RAM stick or some shit) or is it just running at a lower rate because it's idle.

I guarantee I'm being a complete idiot here, so feel free to put in me in my place.

Yup, not even a damn Google search man.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_data_rate

The 1866 Mhz number you see is the effective data rate. That is how much data it can move per second.

The number you see on the motherboard is the chip's clockrate.

How much better is an i3-4130 compared to a Pentium chip? We're upgrading work computers and trying to map it all out.

The i3 has hyperthreading so it can help when you have a lot of stuff open at the same time.

But in terms of performace, almost the same really unless you multitask or do heavy stuff.

Are you in the US?

That build looks like it will be enough for 2D console emulation, if he wants to do 3D emulation he may want better CPU and graphics card. Is there a reason why he wants that GT210 graphics card? It's not that much better than integrated graphics. In fact, from a cursory search online, some even say it is worse performing than the Pentium's integrated graphics.

If possible, I recommend the Pentium G3258 instead of the G3220. It costs a little bit more, but the ability to overclock will give it that much more processing power so it won't suffer from slowdown if at all. If the G3220 is bundled along with the RAM, then that's a pretty decent price.

Corsair CX power supplies are OK, but not the greatest thing you can buy for the price. For example, this XFX 550 watt power supply ($45) costs the same but is a rebadged Seasonic design. It has higher wattage and it's better quality than the CX430. If your brother would prefer to save some money instead, there's this EVGA 500 watt bronze power supply ($29 after $10 rebate) which is surprisingly decent for the price.

If you can tell me a budget, I'd happily see if I could spec a better build for the price. There are other options too like an AMD APU system which is low cost but will actually handle some 3D graphics quite decently.

Check your BIOS, see what speed it is reported to be running at. It's worth checking because unless you have specifically set your RAM to run in XMP profile mode, your RAM is most likely running at a default of 1333MHz or something.

Btw, I have Kingstons and they say they don't have XMP profiles. I already put BIOS at 1866mhz, CPU-Z says it is at 1866, but task manager says 1333. Can you confirm that it is indeed how Kingston rams work or am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks, that would be great. Yeah, we are in the US. He didn't specifically mention a budget but I'm going to say $400-500. He did mention he wants to emulate N64, but from what I remember that's sort of a shit show. I thought about an APU as well so that might be worth looking into.

I wouldn't trust Windows 8.1 Task Manager to report speed properly. It doesn't appear to be reading real-time speed for both processor and RAM speed, it is just reading information from somewhere else. Task Manager says my RAM is running at 1200MHz for me and I know that's not true. CPU-Z should be correct, it properly reads the current speed of my RAM (700MHz).

That makes far too much sense, thank you. Will do.
Speccy reports my RAM to be running at 700MHz, my RAM is set in BIOS to run at 1400MHz so Speccy is accurate, it just doesn't account for DDR's doubled effective speed.

This build is a bit heavy on mail in rebates, but it offers very strong performance, enough for 3D emulation of some PS2 and Gamecube/Wii games, going by these performance results from other users (source: [1][2]). It's even somewhat suitable for general PC gaming for more recent titles.

Just wondering, if this PC is going into a cabinet, does he need a case for the PC then? I don't know what it's like inside a arcade cabinet, but if he's a DIY kind of guy, he could actually mount the parts inside without the need for a case and save another $15 or so.

If he doesn't need that much storage space (going by the fact that he chose a 250GB hard drive) then maybe an SSD will be nice to have - it'll load very quickly and the PC will only take seconds to turn on and off. Otherwise, he can get a non-refurbished 160GB Western Digital Blue hard drive for just $16.

This is my current PC and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU as I've had this 2500k for 3-4 years now and I'm ready to take it up a bit. I'm noticing that my new GPU is not giving the gains I would expect in newer games like GTA5 and MKx

Is it time to add more/better RAM as well?

Any recommendations on where else I see performance gains?

Is your 2500K overclocked? If you want a new processor, you'll also need a new motherboard to support it. Generally 8GB of RAM is enough for any game, but if you like to run a lot of things at once, more RAM wouldn't hurt.

Question for those with mechanical keyboards:

I'm currently using a daskeyboard (brown switches) that a friend let me borrow to try out different types of switches. I've also tried out red switches but I like those more because of the linear press. Any suggestions for a good entry level red switch mechanical keyboard? I don't need any fancy LEDs or keybindings for volume and what not. Something around $50-100 preferred.

Yeah, running it anywhere from 4000-4400

Uhh, what kinds of performance are you expecting? A 4.4Ghz 2500K is still extremely good. What resolution and FPS are you looking at?

If that's not doing it for you I'm not sure there will be that much of a jump at all moving to another CPU.

I was pretty unimpressed with GTA5. It had some major stuttering issues as well as some bad pop-in.

Also, I'm aware The Witcher 3 will be particularly CPU intensive and would like to spend some money...

I think at this point it's the placebo effect. Since I bought the CPU in early 2012 I've upgraded my GPU three times...Im ready for my CPU as well.

EDIT: running GTA on 1080p.

Outside of that I play A LOT of Football Manager 2015 which again, is very CPU intensive.

You'll see not much difference... but if you wanna spend. Spend. Get the 5820k and x99 and ddr4

Edit: and sell this Canadian your old parts for cheap.

OK. I'll take a step back after looking at the pricing. Around $700 CAD for the MOBO and i7 version which apparently wont make much difference.

OK - RAM? Should I bother?

Side note: My MOBO desktop software is FUCKING GARBAGE. It's called AI suite II. Is there something else I can be using?

You'll see not much difference... but if you wanna spend. Spend. Get the 5820k and x99 and ddr4

Edit: and sell this Canadian your old parts for cheap.

Got a 750Ti if you want it? Happy to ship it to you if you're not in Vancouver.

OK. I'll take a step back after looking at the pricing. Around $700 CAD for the MOBO and i7 version which apparently wont make much difference.

changing your ram won't do much either. sorry man, you're at the point of diminishing returns. Especially at Canadian prices
Edit. I could actually use one for a workstation

I have 16GB of RAM and I'm glad I spent the extra to get it over 8GB. More and more I find that I'm using 8-10GB of RAM while gaming. Of course, I also keep Chrome, Spotify, Word, Evernote, etc. open in the background. But it's nice to not have to worry about what I have open while I play demanding games. That said, I've never found a situation where I needed to have 16GB of RAM, I'm just lazy and don't like closing programs.

tl;dr: Get more RAM if ya want.

Yeah putting it like that maybe going up to 16 gigs would do something.

You could not use it.

I haven't used good OS Mobo software before. The AI stuff at least works for fan control in Windows which is nice.

For your type of system as pointed out 16GB is nice to have.

I had the sibling of that board (p8z77-i )

Liked the ai suite. On the fly over clock changes, fan control, remote access. Best I've used.

tbh half the reason I got 16GB was because my last build (i7 930+X58) ended up with 12GB that I didn't want to reuse since it was DDR3-1333 and I refused to build a new computer with less!

Thanks! Just one other thing. He mentioned vertical shooters. Does anyone know of a cheap rotating stand for a flat panel?

I hear ya.
I've never had more than 8gb

I don't even know why I upgraded from 6GB to 12GB. Then again, my first posts in PCGAF were trying to figure out why my 3870x2 was showing up in my device manager as a 6800 series.
I had upgraded to a 6850 and forgotten about it.

Another fun fact: I drunkenly bought the 3870x2 in college (I had a 7600GT) because I thought I was getting an amazing deal on the newly released 4870x2. Oh well.

Haha. Nice. I have no idea what card I had before my 4850. Then went to a 6850. Then in the space of three months I had a 570, 660, then 670. Only way I was allowed to buy the 670 was if I didn't upgrade for four years. That was two years ago lol. But I did negotiate a cpu upgrade from my i3 this year And probably to finish my watercooling finally.

The first GPU I remember using was a GeForce 2 MX400. Then when I was like 13 I went out on Black Friday with my dad and got a GeForce 4 ti 4200 (128MB edition... more but slower VRAM than the 64MB edition), which I used until I got a Radeon 9600 Pro (the halcyon days of the Radeon 9xxx series... so good... I remember people unlocked the 9500's into the 9700's haha). Then I built my first desktop with money I got from working as a cashier at a local grocery store (based around an E6600, which I always semi-regretted because they launched the Q6600 like 3 months later lol) that had the 7600GT. Then the 3870x2, then a 6850, and now a 290x.

Jeez I'm a nerd.

Really though, just reminds me how I've always been a PC gamer at heart. Hell some of my earliest childhood memories are playing DOS games on my parents computer. I still remember the day we brought home a new computer (with Windows 95!) from CompUSA and I played the original C&C.

Hey guys, I need help. I just got my EVGA GTX 970 FTW and when it's installed my computer will take about 5 minutes just to POST. It'll sit on the motherboard bios screen and none of the buttons work, but eventually it WILL start loading windows.

I put my EVGA GTX 670 FTW back in and it POSTs instantly and begins loading windows. The fact that my old GPU works without issue to me signifies it's an issue with the card itself since the power requirements for the 670 and 970 are very similar.

Has anyone else had this kind of issue before? Is the card busted? :(

Update your motherboard bios

For those with GTX 970 & 980, what are your thoughts on DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution)?

I'd like to know this too. Just got my 970 in today. Smooth install. Games are running hella nice now with everything with bigger settings. But this DSR thing I just discovered and curious about how it work or how well it works for that matter.

A log of the last twelve hours of my activity -

1. Installed Windows 8 onto media pc via usb key. Windows 8 would not boot without the usb key in the drive. It installed the MBR to the usb key and not the hard drive.

2. One reboot, format and install later, Windows 7 did the exact same thing on a different thumb drive, despite it not doing that on any other pc before. Figure it has to do with some setting in the old socket 775 motherboard, but who knows.

3. Removed the media pc entirely from it's awkward location, opened it up and hooked up the optical drive. Installed Windows 8.1.

5. Stereo audio only on Radeon 5450 hdmi through receiver.

6. Loaded up Catalyst to have a look at sound options as I see on my 7970 every day. There are none.

7. Go into 3D Application settings and turn vertical refresh to always on. Screen goes grey. Catalyst reports a colour depth of 0 bpc.

8. Faff about trying to fix this until giving up and express uninstalling all AMD software.

9. Reset and try to get into Safe Mode to use Display Driver Uninstaller. F8 just after POST brings up a boot menu. F8 just after the boot menu does nothing. Fuck it, run DDU anyway.

10. Install old Catalyst version 12.2 (known to work with audio). Display at 1024*768. Highest resolution 1280*1024. Obviously not compatible with Windows 8. Express uninstall, DDU, yadda yadda, back to Catalyst Omega.

11. Install Realtek driver for Radeon HDMI Audio. 5.1 shows up. Run in Kodi, some formats show up on the receiver, some don't (notably DTS Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD). Despite all speakers working, Supported Formats tab shows only "max number of channels 2".

13. Choose each known driver for hdmi audio in Device Manager while telling Kodi to use WASAPI HDMI with passthrough. Some formats work, others don't - eg, trying DTS MA will have the receiver blink DTS and PCM respectively. No sound. No sound at all on those drivers that have only two channels. On the Realtek driver, encoded formats (DTS, DTS-HD, Doly TrueHD, etc) show on the Sound tab. On the AMD driver, they don't.

12. Open up Catalyst Control Center to see if audio options become available. Of course they don't. Close it. Black and white screen with no colours again.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

Currently back to installing Windows 7 via optical drive (which yes, meant pulling it out again). Upon initial copy and install of files, CHKDSK needs to run. "Bugger", I thought. "Maybe the shitty old ATA 120GB is going". Stupid me. It goes right through that drive and then says it needs to check the remaining 3x 1TB drives. Because.

Sometimes... sometimes, I really hate pc's.

Someone recommend me a build. Deadass I got back into PC gaming in 2011 but the whole time I've been using a Dell XPS that I just replaced the GPU and PSU. Been gaming fine on it but I want to make my own build. Don't know where to start. Budget is like $500 (including keyboard and mouse maybe, if not it's cool) because I don't have a WHOLE lot of money to spend but I at least want a rig that can run games around medium to high.

Thanks in advance :)

Update your motherboard bios

Gah, I knew I should have tried that first. Updated to the most recent non-betas and that fixed it...even though the bios update itself is from 2012. Thanks for the updates Gigabyte!

(Thanks for the suggestion, very appreciated!)

What are your current specs? You can probably reuse parts from your old PC to help with the costs, as $500 actually isn't a lot.

Does this seem wrong to you guys? My RAM has two different frequencies and max bandwith.

MSI Afterburner suddenly isn't letting me up the Memory Clock on my 970. After I confirm it, it jumps back to 0. This is the first time I have seen this happen.

What could possibly be causing this?

This is my current PC and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU as I've had this 2500k for 3-4 years now and I'm ready to take it up a bit. I'm noticing that my new GPU is not giving the gains I would expect in newer games like GTA5 and MKx

Is it time to add more/better RAM as well?

Any recommendations on where else I see performance gains?

I have the same processor and I'm in the same boat.. I'd really love to upgrade and get the best of what's available now but Skylake is releasing in the summer and the current motherboards will not be compatible (unless I'm wrong?)

Question for the thread.. How much can I sell my GTX 780 for?
