A few things of note:
  • Their goal is to make the process of playing your games as easy as possible.
  • Faster to get back into your games.
  • Quicker suspend/resume.
  • OS, games, cloud syncs update in background. Something they want to do with Steam Deck, but it's challenging with battery powered devices like Steam Deck.
  • Eliminate friction points.
  • Steam Machine can wake up your TV & soundbar.
  • No need to update drivers.
  • No third party software required for games.
  • Tools outside of games to control the internal and external resolution, performance level, framerate limit, etc.
  • APIs for developers to select the best settings for games on the Steam Machine.
  • Proton compatibility is in a great spot which is what they wanted for the Steam Machine.
  • The positive feedback for SteamOS proved to them that there is demand for a Steam Machine.
  • Steam Machine will pave the way for SteamOS on a bunch of different machines.
  • They want to encourage people to try out SteamOS on their own hardware, they will expand availability in the future.
  • Their mandate was you need to be able to play every game on Steam at 4K 60fps using upscaling.
  • Affordability is super important, they want to reach a lot of people.
  • Steam hardware survey was used as a reference.
  • Good upgrade path for people on older machines.
  • Simplicity is key.
  • They received feedback from Steam Deck users that were happy with docked play, but wanted more power.
  • 10-15% of Steam Deck users are connected to an external display.
  • SteamOS is good on the Steam Deck, it's even better on the Steam Machine.

every generation since PS1 I've seen people saying that 60 FPS should be mandatory for the next generation. I guess Steam will finally make this dream a reality.

Those are some nice bullet-points. Them making APIs so devs can generate presets based on the Steam Machine hardware could help a bunch over time in getting significantly more games to just work out of the box with decent performance. Cool that it can wake soundbars, I assumed just TVs.

Oh, my impression was that it was just doing the display-off automatic updates that the new update for Steam Deck was doing, but if it's getting closer to background updates like a console that's cool.

10-15% of Steam Deck users are connected to an external display.
Also thought it would be lower.

Are we sure they looked at the specs? Upscaling from what? 480p?
I think they could, depending on the settings.

Earlier today I came across a video of someone playing BF6 on a 1080ti at 1440P (native) and all settings on low. He was getting above 90 FPS consistently.

I'm thinking the Machine's specs would allow it to at least run at least 720P and upscale from that

Seen this earlier; one of the few IGN tech videos that doesn't suck.

The bolded are the standouts for me. It definitely sounds like they have accomplished what companies like Microsoft have only been paying lip service to, and I expect SteamOS performance to only keep getting better with time. It seems like they have definite plans to bring SteamOS to desktops in general; I mean you can kind of install it on a set-up right now but it's not officially supported that way.

The point on affordability is interesting too, and I think that's why they have the two different SKUs. Call me crazy but I'm thinking the 512 GB model is probably coming in at $549 - $599 (that's probably also the realistic range at a conservative estimate). The 2 TB model will probably hit somewhere between $649 - $799. Both are great prices for the combination of specs, features & functionality the device seems to be bringing.

And at least for my own personal use-case, like I said in another thread, this will be a great starting point for getting familiarized with a non-Windows OS environment. If I need more performance, well by then they might have SteamOS readily available for desktops and/or upgraded Steam Machine boxes, and I can go with that option while keeping the Steam Machine as a companion device. There's a lot of potential here.
