The real thing that should be difficult is making him interesting and scary.

making the joker interesting on film is like the easiest thing ever at this point. i'm not really worried about whether or not leto will be entertaining, I'm just wondering if he'll just be satisfying or more than that.

I thought it was just the Ledger announcement that made everyone go stupid. By the time we saw the actual images I think it started to grow on people.

Yea people that are saying this is like the Ledger thing are off base. People had problems with Ledger as an actor if I recall correctly. Most of these problems are with the design of the joker. I am optimistic for Leto's performance but the design is cringy.

There's no reason different interpretations can't work on film. Ledger's Joker worked (mostly). A more street joker could work too, if they didn't fuck up the execution like they have here.

Execution? From one picture? We haven't heard him speak, seen him move, watched him interact with other characters. Execution is more than just appearance.

What if the origin of this version of the character is that he had those tattoos before he "became" the Joker? I mean...its not like he came out of the womb looking like that. There was a period where he was just some psycho criminal prior to his first encounter with Batman (assuming their going with the more classic origin).

There, tattoos explained. Not saying that justifies the look of the tattoos, but it's not all that hard to understand how they came to be there.

Yeah it would be pretty clever.

I'll never get how fans can accept hundreds of reinterpretations and alternate universes and such in the comics but expect film/tv to be sacrosanct and make little to no changes.

They can make all the cosmetic changes they like but if they suck then well, they suck. It's not like those hundreds of reinterpretations and alternate universes are void of criticism so why should this be.

So a narcissist who tries too hard to act like he's crazy gets incredibly self-aware tattoos to promote the image that he's a nutjob. Sounds perfect to me. Don't know how people don't think it's Joker-y for him to be self aware with his "HAHAHA" tats. Joker always struck me as someone very cold and calculating and the "insanity" was mostly his way of marketing himself.

However, the "damaged" tattoo is a bit silly looking. Mostly because head tattoos are always silly looking.
